Apologies for being all over this thread. I’m in iso and have gotten a bit obsessed. I should take a break
Nah man, you’ve been a good honest querying mind.
Its SBTDOTB, Ferbs and I who clearly have some untreated obsessive compulsive issues to work through

We are never going to agree. You two have justified the murder of hundreds so far, and likely thousands.

It is immoral and evil what is occurring, regardless of your justification.

How many deaths need to occur before you denounce Putin?
We're not justifying it, we're pissed off that we - the West - bear responsibility for it. It should never have happened and if a pack of seppo war hawks and multinational energy thieving scum had left things alone it never would and Ukraine would probably be a trading member of the EU by now as well. There'd be no boats of fracked gas crossing the Atlantic to Europe over the next decade tho.

Jesus ****en Christ how blinded by jingoism are you?

So if the intent is for Russia and China to start pushing for a new bi-polar global set up, then this must have been the goal for quite some time. Accordingly:

  • In 2000's Russia gets the message, no room for you in NATO. You are more useful as the West's bogey man.
  • China continues to rise, using its financial clout to align many smaller African nations to its agenda and increases its footprint in SE Asia waters.
  • US and its allies shoot itself in the foot by bogging itself down in the Middle East, creating the conditions for hell on earth and a mass refugee crisis into Europe.
  • Russia foments far right agendas in Europe via online platforms in response to growing integration with the eastern European nations and refugee influx from the Middle East, leading to a fracturing of relations within the EU and questions around its viability.
  • Russia foments far right agendas in the US via online platforms due to the growing inequities in a dying empire, leading to the election of Donald Trump and the continued degradation of its governmental institutions.
  • Russia actively supports Russian nationalism in regions within its sphere of influence leading ultimately to the current invasion of Ukraine which will provide it with two west flank buffer states with the EU and NATO.
  • China and Russia work together to bring into its sphere of influence smaller nations in the Middle East, Asia and Africa to create an alternative geopolitical military and economic power base to rival US, Europe and the rest of the 'West'.

Interesting question here is what happens with India. They are quiet on the Russian front but are actively negatory on China.
India will bide its time I think. Its got the same British heritage we share with the US and Canada.

The far right agenda's don't just come from Moscow tho. There are elements of them native to the US and EU establishment too, they just keet themselves hidden till we forget how bad the other bits of ww2 (not the fighting) actually were. Anders Breviek didn't hang out with weird Russian "Templer" weirdos.

And I see that you have become the resident sanctimonious self righteous prick that was formally held be he who shall not be named.

One who thinks they get to abuse people for having the temerity to disagree with your world view.
Self awareness poty.

The numbers you’re quoting are from Ukraine, the Russians say they have 1,500 casualties and I can’t remember how many prisoners they said Ukraine has taken. So I spose the number is probably in the middle. I’m actually surprised Russia has even admitted now that they’re taking casualties. It’s a bit of a 180 for them
None of us know anything about the numbers and no involved will be telling the truth - its a war.

mate, you are posting as if you're justifying the war. Your insights into why it is happening have been very informative but nothing you have posted justifies the war. Just because Putin said he would invade if Ukraine went down the Nato path, and others said he would, doesn't justify him actually doing it.
It does from his pov tho, just not ours.

No Russian leader will allow NATO on their doorstep. It's the equivalent of tattooing "I'm the west's bitch" on their forehead. If you want to start a war with someone like that you just keep pushing them for two decades then when finally go "well **** it" you can say "See they are the bad guys not us" shut down the internet and **** the worlds economy forever.

I'm not justifying the war, I'm pissed off because it should never have happened and we've seen it coming for years.

Except this war is all on video. I think the Syrian war was the first to be almost fully captured on camera but this one is all on camera. When there’s civilians around everything is being filmed and then uploaded.

I personally don’t like to look at that stuff because I don’t think I’d like it if it was someone I loved being broadcast all over the internet.

Soviets lost yep.

Kadyrov is the Chechen warlord Putin put in place to keep the peace there - which he has done very successfully and with enormous brutality.
Grsny is a very pretty looking city now tho...

Absolutely. I think some of the hardcore skeptics around here would be surprised about how hard it is these days to brush thousands of deaths under the carpet in modern warfare.

I spent about a month outside Mosul when ISIS were still running the joint. We spent a couple weeks interviewing Sinjar survivors while they were experiencing a hell beyond what you and I can imagine. I remember standing next to Kurdish dudes as they punched in requests for air strikes from US jets coming in from the Gulf on their cheap Android tablets. There were local organisations there keeping tabs on just about every local life lost. It was pretty grim trench warfare, but every life was accounted for.

Yeah pretty hard to “liberate” a country when the people that live there don’t actually want you there.

It’s also worth noting that while the Taliban is in control of Afghanistan, the US sure as sh*t sent a message that if they bleed, everyone bleeds. Iraq and Afghanistan will never be the same again. It might be wrong but it is what it is.

Did you see the US intelligence report that I posted a few pages back? They think it’ll take a few weeks to control Kyiv and occupy Ukraine somewhere between 10-20 years and ultimately lose, just like they did in Afghanistan.
So we (the west) are essentially Osama Bin Laden, a whole bunch of Saudi Royalty with a few others tagging along, Ukraine is Afghanistan and Russia is the US in this particular repeat of history.

Every life on both sides?

Putin’s take on invading Iraq

President Vladimir Putin today called for a peaceful resolution to the Iraqi crisis and said a U.S. military attack would have the "gravest consequences."

"We stand for resolving the problem exclusively through peaceful means," Putin said at a meeting with Muslim religious leaders at the Kremlin. "Any other option would be a mistake. It would be fraught with the gravest consequences. It will result in casualties and destabilize the international situation in general."
And yet we're sposed to act all outraged when it happens again cos we aren't involved? We set this example.

Every life on both sides?
In my experience, the Kurds would keep detailed notes of how many soldiers they believed they had killed and where. Obviously there would be many occasions when they were unable to confirm the identity of the deceased if they were on the ISIS side, but they would come back to HQ with estimated figures and locations. Lest there be any doubt, the sky was filled with drones very high above us, probably from several different countries, which would have been verifying all the ground intel being fed from the local forces.

A lot of Indians are getting the IstandwithPutin hashtag trending on Twitter. They did similar last year when Israeli forces were bombing Palestine. What’s up with that?
Alot of Indians are fascists. Modi is a neoliberal campaigner but he has alot of support among conservative Indians.

Also a few days ago alot of stuff was going around social media showing indians being abused bashed and "tortured" by Ukrainian and Polish border guards.

You sure that wasn’t the refugees invited there by Lukashenko?

****! What was that like?

The people posting the videos said they were filmed on the Western borders of Ukraine. I dunno if there has been any change to that in the last 24 hours. I haven't had power or internet for most of yesterday arvo and today.

fu**! What was that like?
My partner interviewed young Yazidi women who had been imprisoned as sex slaves by ISIS foreign fighters.
A Kurdish general was generous enough to accommodate us with their forces inside an abandoned school about 2km from the frontline because he wanted the west to know what they were up against.
It was one of the very few parts of my professional life where I wasn't doubting why I was there or whether what I was doing mattered.

(I'm happy to give you the detailed version in person during the H&A season)
