I would’ve thought there are other ways (such as the ones jd2010 mentioned) in which they could encourage sales without going against the advice of the government and putting the community at risk.

Is it against the advice of the government? Didn't realise, thought they were classified as essential. If they aren't then yes they shouldn't be encouraging people to buy their stock, they should be shutting down.

That woman spitting on bananas was posted on reddit (video been deleted now), yet no one has reported on it. Not sure it's definitely fake of course, but it looks like it. There's a lot of bs going around at the moment. Don't believe anything you see.

Seems a good excuse to fan the flames of xenophobia.

Encouraging high volumes of people to enter a store via in-store discounts goes against social and physical distancing, which is a concept the government are pushing extremely hard. So yes, it quite clearly goes against the advice of the government.

Ok so they'll be fined and shut down by the government I guess.

Anyone at home with kids the Joe Wickes PE thing on youtube is a great way to start the day.

It's on Monday to Friday 9am UK time but you can watch it any time.

No they won’t, as it’s not unlawful. It’s just unethical and frowned upon (except by yourself, of course).

That's how a spend and save/giveaway works
He quite clearly doesn’t comprehend the issue with in-store promotions throughout a pandemic and doesn’t understand there are ways in which you can retain customers without enticing them into your store, despite the fact of you providing a two perfect examples.

He’s having back to back mares.

Oh ok so not against the law.

I would think that if they are encouraging people to shop in their stores they would enforce appropriate social distancing measures because otherwise they would be open to fines. And if they do enforce appropriate social distancing then it really doesn't matter.

But of course then you wouldn't be able to get mad.

The real world doesn’t work like that I’m afraid. Were fines issued to Coles, Aldi, Woolworths, etc. for not enforcing social distancing with regards to panicked customers flooding their stores for toilet paper? Plus a lot of their staff are teenagers in their first jobs. They’re not trained crowd controllers.

The best these stores can do right now is encourage people to exhibit social distancing. Myer is doing the exact opposite. So yeah, people have a right to be pissed off. Maybe your attitude will change if someone you know falls victim to this virus.

Think they've just locked down retail.

Apparently the real world does work like that.

How the **** is a hairdresser an essential service? Since when was getting a haircut deemed essential in every day life in a time like this? **** me sideways.

Just shut us down cos people are ****ing ignorant and don't give a ****.

😂

You said they enforce social distancing instore. They don’t.

Now they have locked down retail, probably because social distancing is not enforced in-store.

I actually said I would think they do if the government is happy with them being open. You said that's not how the real world works literally as they closed them.

Just give it a rest.

AMP Capital chief economist Shane Oliver has predicted that unemployment will likely shoot up to about 10 per cent and this could result in a 20 per cent drop in Melbourne and Sydney house prices.

Ive read similar, there’s genuine concern about unemployment. The photos of the queues at Centrelink was distressing.

And domestic violence is significantly higher too. Awful stuff all round.

Brendan Murphy is unbelievable. One of reasons for keeping schools open because, apparently, there is no evidence that kids are major spreaders of the virus. And this muppet is Chief Medical Officer.

Yeah this is going to be much worse than GFC. Saw graphs on the news that indicated this could be as bad as the Great Depression.

But they don’t and it’s crazy you think social distancing is enforced during panic buying. It’s a mere afterthought.
Just give it a rest.
Rich.

So basically more of the same except now you can't get married, have a funeral or get your box waxed. Was that really worthy of a press conference?

We found out again that we don't know if kids are carriers so we'll just let them congregate anyway instead of doing the sensible thing and ASSUMING THEY DO ****ING CARRY THE VIRUS YOU INCOMPETENT ****S

I’m all for piling on this current government and they could/should be doing better, but any adult here has to take personal responsibility for their actions now. Everyone knows how serious this is and what they shouldn’t be doing, and those doing the wrong thing shouldn’t get away with hiding behind ‘ScoMo wasn’t clear enough’.

The shutdown of retail isn’t as clear cut as people make out either. If it was just for 2-4 weeks then it would be a pretty straightforward decision. The problem is we’re told anything that is closed will be closed for a minimum of 6 months. That makes it very complicated. People will have fridges/freezers that stop working or beds that have to be replaced, and suddenly places like Harvey Norman etc. become an essential services. Children in particular will need new clothes, suddenly best and less etc. become an essential service. It’s a spiral that occurs across a variety of products.

Basically the longer we’re told this will be an issue and places will be closed, the wider the classification of ‘essential services’ becomes.
