Police are running a top-level investigation into sexual assaults at Melbourne child care centres.
Police this morning revealed they had arrested and charged 26-year-old Joshua Brown relating to over 70 offences related to eight victims.
A major press conference will be held over this issue this morning.
It will be attended by high-ranking Premier Jacinta Allan, police minister Anthony Carbines and health officials.
Deputy Commissioner Wendy Steendam will address the media along with chief heath officer Dr Christian McGrath and Minister for Children Lizzie Blandtjorn.

Sending my first born to day care at the end of the year and it makes me nervous as hell.

Unfortunately one of the prerequisites is no male teachers - which isn't overly fair but I'm just not willing to run that risk.

I didn't ever come across a male once in all my 3 kids going to childcare. I imagine nothing much has changed, it is just how the industry is. Day care will be fine mate, it's great for the development of kids. Everyone in my friendship group did it.

Women can be just as abusive though. I worked at a childcare centre for a year or two and was made to feel absolutely unwelcome and basically quit because it was an awful work environment. Attitudes like this don't particularly help.

Would love that to be an option but a mortgage in Sydney means two incomes unfortunately.

We're lucky though, we've got friends who have had their kids in from 6 months. Our eldest will at least be 2.5 by the time he goes.

Absolutely, I don't disagree with you at all. I'm sure there are plenty of great male childcare workers. It's just not worth the risk for me though.

I've often thought about the scenario you discuss, especially if/when the kids are kicking off. I often feel like I've got a whole lot of eyes on me but I suspect realistically, no one is giving it a second thought.

Most child care centres give you pretty up to date monitoring on your kid through the day, pictures/videos/documentation of what they're doing, but of course there's risks anywhere. Think there was a 4 corners report recently on child care workers hitting the kids - obviously not necessarily as scarring as sexual abuse but there's an element of risk that will always be there when putting the care of your kids in someone else's hands, and its where you just need to be confident and careful in your considerations. I think basing things off something as simple as gender is a really bad way to go about it. Would you then block them from having male teachers in school? No male coaches for sport? No sleep overs at houses where there is a male parent present?

For me it's about educating your child on consent and their body autonomy as soon as they're capable of understanding, and having clear and open communication with them so that if ever they're in a situation that makes them uncomfortable they know what's right and wrong, and they feel comfortable talking to you if there is anything that happens. You want to prevent things from happening in the first place but setting them up with a worldview that everyone is a pedophile out to get them would be such a horrible way to grow up.

Yeah our daycare is great. Toddler absolutely loves it, all the educators are brilliant too.

Yes, very good post. While there is some abhorrent scum out there in the world the average person for the most part is inherently good. I never had anything but complete faith in my childcare educators, they were very open and transparent. We would have been in a bad way financially without them too.

I'm now past that stage with all kids in school but do remember those times positively.

My daughter was taught rather young that from your head to your toes you say what goes.

i originally tried early childhood at uni when i finished, mostly cos i didnt know what to do when i finished and i always got on well with kids and that. i lasted a semester and quit after my first placement. the looks i got from the parents just ruined me. its something i probably would've been good at and there's such a dearth of males in the early childhood/primary education sector but i also totally understand why.

I understand why but I also think it's a real shit go. Kids should be exposed to men and women as they will learn and develop in different ways having a broader spectrum of interactions in their formative years. I remember as a kid being really excited as in Year 5 I finally got a male teacher and I responded really well being in that class. Just such a shame.

yeah my sister is a primary school teacher for a pretty poor school and i think there's like 1 or 2 male teachers there. there's a lot of very disadvantaged children there and having come from a well rounded environment what my sister has told me about many of her kids has really shocked me.

Financially more than anything. Where we are located it’d cost roughly $140 a day for child care, my partner is only working 3 days a week currently so a little more than half her pay would be going straight to paying for child care.

Were able to work it around between my parents and hers looking after them when we’re both working and it’s free

We've thankfully got that too, although that brings its own set of complexities!

I was fortunate enough to have seen right through him even at a young age, he ran a drama class which I attended once and then never again. Remember telling my parents about him, they took it up with the school, nothing happened.

He even created a group called ‘secret men’s business’ which unfortunately lots of boys around my age at the time attended, god knows what sick this took place in that. He was also married and his wife worked at my school too at the time. Some real vile disgusting humans out there, glad he eventually got caught.
