I did see in England they had started installing chargers in light poles for those who couldn't charge off street.

Without home charging EVs are not worth it so this seems a pretty big step.

One trial I've seen up here is kerb chargers, essentially a plug built into the ground that connects to your house's power. You simply plug your charging cord into it and away you go. I presume you'd be able to lock it to prevent others using it, and I'm sure you could get long enough cords to mitigate your parking distance from house, but using the notion that people need to park on the street as a serious reason to not get ev is silly.

It seems pretty clear within our lifetimes that the vast majority of personal transport will be ev.

Hydrogen cars will be bigger in Australia, if (huge if) they can figure out how to safely utilise it.

I'm a little different to most, I'm a car guy. Worked in the industry for 10 years. I won't ever choose EV over ICE if given the choice.

Why? Driveability wise EVS are far superior. More power, instant power and torque. All things even EVS are superior. The only weakness is long distance driving and the need for a quick charge when stopping to recharge. I am sure that will be resolved within 10-20 years with cheap fast chargers at the majority of servos eventually being the norm.


I quite enjoyed driving a BMW I4 for a month. Going back to my diesel SUV was a big eye opener.

I've worked with high performance cars (Lambo's, Porsche's etc) - EV's just aren't on the same level for me.

My Brother in law has the top of the line BYD sports car - it's rapid, it just feels wrong to me. I absolutely hated it.

Listen to a Porsche GT2RS cold start. That excites me. My old 3 series BMW, that excited me.

It's also what I hate about modern cars in general, they just have zero character anymore. So many are just soulless box shape on wheels. All in the same boring colours. Give me the old school.

It really isn't that simplistic...although I suppose it seems that way when you aren't a car person haha.

I'm assuming you aren't passionate about cars? Cars have been my life since I was a kid. It's a love affair that runs more deeply than 'vroom vroom'. Ever looked into the engineering that goes into something like a Porsche? It's absolutely incredible. Ever seen a factory in Europe where they produce them? It's a sight to behold.

I'm not anti EV, they just hold absolutely zero interest or appeal to me.

Ever looked into the engineering that goes into something like a Porsche? It's absolutely incredible. Ever seen a factory in Europe where they produce them? It's a sight to behold.

You cited the sound on start up as a genuine reason to drive an ICE. Sorry but it is that simple. If you want to appreciate the engineering no one's stopping you having one sat in your garage, we're talking about cars for commuting. Just a bit of a funny factor and you aren't the first to mention it.

Range anxiety is only going to be an issue on long trips.

Electric cars are best in city traffic. Daily use, regen braking charging etc.

In this use scenario with charging at home maybe once a week there are no range dramas at all.

Hybrids have regen braking too. I had a Toyota Yaris loan car for a week and hated it. Touch the brake and it was like doing an emergency stop. And because of the continuous transmission there was absolutely no feel for how fast you were going. So you could easily find yourself doing 70 in a 60 zone.

But were talking about the relative costs between an EV and a hybrid. It only takes a couple of minutes to enter your personal scenario into Chat:GPT and it will show you the numbers.

What about service costs? A hybrid has a combustion engine which requires a more intensive service. The range on EVs are about fourfold with $0 required on petrol and minimal charging costs depending on your choice of charging.

That's another thing I noticed. With regen braking I barely needed wheel brakes alot of the time.

I imagine brakes on EVs would outlast ICE vehicles by a factor of many times.

I managed charging off a 2kw standard powerpoint by always plugging the car in as soon as we got in for the day overnight.

So 11kw chargers shouldn't be too bad.

Just different strokes for different folks. I look at that ID4 and think it looks absolutely terrible. That's the beauty of the car market though, there's something out there for everyone.

Out of interest, what colour did you get yours in? I'll guess it's silver or white?

Continuous transmission? Not sure what you mean but accelerating in an ev feels like you're accelerating because that's exactly what you're doing. Driving an ICE on a motor way and cruising at 110 feels just as much like doing 110 as an ev.

You can toggle the regen braking so that it only activates when your foor is on the brake. The "B" mode is only advised for congested city driving, not all the time.

I'd be shocked if that were the case. Service costs on an ev compared to a hybrid or ICE are virtually nil.
