Yeah Shawshank is an absolute classic.

I can never rank it as best of all time because it's completely different to say Jurassic Park which is another film I love.

Hard to rank movies, like music too.

Shawshank Redemption is overrated. Good film, possibly great, but not one of the best of all time like is commonly said. Escape from Alcatraz did it just as well. One scene that I have trouble watching from that film is when the Doc chops his fingers off. Makes my toes curl.

These are possibly my ten favourite films of all time:

10 - 2001 (superb cinematography, a film to immerse yourself in)
9 - Scum (loved this film as a teenager about life in a British borstal. So gritty unlike anything you find in Hollywood)
8 - Star Wars (the original and my favourite film as a kid. Still enjoy it today)
7 - Ferris Buellers Day off
6 - Platoon
5 - A Clockwork Orange (like 2001, beautifully shot, deep with a nice measure of ultra-violence)
4 - Quadrophenia (no film depicts growing up working class in Britain as this one)
3 - The Holy Grail / Life of Brian (not a big fan of Monty Pythons TV shows but these films are the funniest I've seen)
2 - The Great Escape (I can never grow tired of it)
1 - The Deer Hunter (has everything that makes a film great)

Too difficult for me to ever narrow it down to 10.

Never rated 2001 though, watched it again recently cos everyone says it's a classic but it just bores me. I got through it but at the end I was just like... meh.

Love Monty Python. Ferris Bueller is great. I haven't seen Scum or Quadrophenia so I'll have to look them up. Any other similar films I should have a look at?

A good British comedy you might like is "Withnail and I". Huge cult film here. Can't think of many other films along the lines of Scum/Quadrophenia. Romper Stomper is a good one but years since I saw it so don't know how it stacks up.

2001 isn't everyone's cup of tea. I don't think most kids of today could sit through it to be honest. They need more going on and stuff that does the thinking for you

I just think it's one of those films that doesnt age well at all. It was like mind blowing for it's time but now it's just kinda silly.

Romper Stomper is excellent. Crowe is great in it.

Most critics won't agree with that assessment. The visuals alone are not what makes it a great film, but coupled with the direction, camera work and all the other production values that make Kubric stand alone. The pacing is slow - even by the standards back then, so understand why people don't like it. The soundtrack is also superb. It's more of a "thinkers" film, than someone who prefers action and special effects

Yeah i understand all that. I feel that some people just get tricked into following the masses. Its known as a great film. Its Kubrick. Its high brow. So you have to like it or appreciate it. When if you take a step back. Its just slow, boring and pretentious really. But thats just my opinion.

Perhaps most people are able to appreciate it without buying into the hype? I hear that argument about liking the Beatles, but I don't agree with it. It's down to tastes, and it's perfectly acceptable for you not to enjoy it in my opinion. I don't agree though that it gets a free ride because of the Director and is considered "high brow". That's doing it a dis-service

Always find it tough to rank movies but The Departed stands as a clear number 1 for me.

Great film. You've reminded me now, it's been a while since I've seen it. Might have to watch it again in the coming days.

One of my old bosses used to quote this movie non stop. But took things too literally at times (ie, the line about telling women to stick their head into a bowl of cocaine and not to come out until they're numb).

I've only seen 5,6 and 8 of those! Need to watch deer hunter.

Can't even rank a top 10 for movies, way to hard.

Clear winner for me at no.1 though is the LOTR trilogy. Like the hunger games too.

I too think shawshank is overrated.

Rating movies is so hard. The Departed is so well written, acted, shot, directed. It's close to a masterpiece and I love it.

Ferris Buellers Day Off though is not a masterpiece yet I love it way more than The Departed.

Anyone using the my deductions app for lodging your tax return? About to throw my phone out the window, it's absolutely driving me nuts. Trying to enter logbook details for my car from 2015/16 is an absolute nightmare, it seems you have to do it as you go along. What about those who keep a paper logbook and enter it into etax usually? Mytax is a joke, much prefer etax.
