Starting with Sam Lonergan.

"Last year I did a lot of off-my-feet training like boxing and swimming and that sort of stuff and this year I am going down a different path and doing a lot of running training including one kilometre, two kilometre and three kilometre time trials so when pre-season comes around I am used it and mentally ready," he said.

It's been documented about how we want bigger bodies in the packs and that despite losing Lovett we still have some good pace through the middle, albeit the likes of Watson, Hocking and Prismall slowing us a down a bit.

Do you agree Lonergan should be looking to focus on his running more than his upper body strength to perhaps develop as a winger? Or perhaps it may help more having a bigger body to do the bullocking work off the HF flank?

Go through our list and determine what you'd like them to focus more upon. How much intensity they should be using? Which players should be on a modified program (ie. Should Gumby remain on a modified program for risk of injuring his back again over summer or be thrown in the deep end to train with the main group?)?

Ranked the following based on running (aerobic & anaerobic work) and strength & conditioning.

Atkinson, Jarrod 38 181 cm 81 kg 21/2/1985 - Running: running is probably Atko's main attribute, which is why I'd prefer to see him continue to do more running work.
Bellchambers, Thomas 44 201 cm 102 kg 9/7/1989 - S&C: Need bigger ruckmen more than we need versatile running ones.
Daniher, Darcy 28 191 cm 89 kg 21/9/1989 - S&C: As a KPP I'd prefer to see him do more strength work.
Davey, Alwyn 29 173 cm 70 kg 15/5/1984 - Running: Little guy with plenty of speed but not enough stamina.
Dempsey, Courtenay 15 186 cm 82 kg 28/8/1987 - Running: Bit more strength work in the upper body but we need his run off half back.
Dyson, Ricky 2 182 cm 82 kg 28/9/1985 - S&C: Can definitely improve as a runner, but at 82kgs I think he needs a bit more muscle on him
Fletcher, Dustin 31 198 cm 93 kg 7/5/1975 - Modified program: To help him see through his final season
Gumbleton, Scott 3 197 cm 95 kg 3/8/1988 - S&C: Already has an excellent fitness base, needs strength and conditioning to harden his body up.
Hille, David 19 201 cm 111 kg 2/6/1981 - Running: Highly doubt Hille's lost much of that incredible bulk, would need a running program to see him get back into shape.
Hocking, Heath 39 187 cm 91 kg 27/12/1987 - S&C: Certainly not the fittest player in the AFL but I prefer to see him join Watson as dominant in-and-under ball winner who can still run off packs.
Hooker, Cale 26 196 cm 93 kg 13/10/1988 - S&C: Good bulk already for the 21yo, a big preseason and he should be able to handle some of the strongest KP forwards out there.
Houli, Bachar 43 180 cm 83 kg 12/5/1988 - Running: Could use some bulk, but I see running as part of being an outside player being more important.
Hurley, Michael 22 193 cm 91 kg 1/6/1990 - Running: Tough one, but has got good bulk already which will only increase with age so building up and maintaining a strong fitness base should be his prerogative.
Jetta, Leroy 7 178 cm 75 kg 6/7/1988 - S&C: 75kg is simply too small for AFL standard for a player who might push into the midfield
Laycock, Jason 27 201 cm 103 kg 4/11/1984 - Running: Good strength about him, could definitely use a solid preseason of running
Lonergan, Sam 14 182 cm 80 kg 26/3/1987 - Running: I agree that he needs to run out games better
Lovett-Murray, Nathan 42 190 cm 87 kg 18/11/1982 - Running: Not the strongest player but a fair few times got caught out for lack of fitness
McPhee, Adam 33 190 cm 89 kg 6/10/1982 - Running: Same boat as NLM
McVeigh, Mark 10 184 cm 84 kg 26/1/1981 - Running: Could definitely use some more bulk, but at his age I doubt that would be a good idea.
Monfries, Angus 6 184 cm 80 kg 19/1/1987 - Running: Needs to be quicker. Decent stamina, but could be better.
Myers, David 23 190 cm 85 kg 30/6/1989 - Not sure
Neagle, Jay 1 190 cm 96 kg 17/1/1988 - Running: Needs to improve his fitness base more than anything else. Has a decent frame for his age. Work ethic + reliable fitness base = potential 80goal a season player. He's got the talent for it.
Pears, Tayte 16 191 cm 91 kg 24/3/1990 - S&C: The stronger our best KP defender gets the more scalps he'll claim. Already has an excellent fitness base.
Prismall, Brent 9 186 cm 82 kg 14/7/1986 - Running: Especially since he's missed out on half the season this year. Needs to get as much mileage into that knee as possible.
Reimers, Kyle 37 183 cm 78 kg 10/1/1989 - S&C: I don't see much of a role for him pushing into the midfield but rather more as a HFF. A stronger frame may give us another option up forward as a smaller guy with an excellent capacity for taking strong marks.
Ryder, Patrick 30 197 cm 90 kg 14/3/1988 - S&C: The more meat on him the more incredible he will. Needs a bigger build so he can withstand extended periods in the ruck when needed. May lose a little bit of his giant leap as a result but we shouldn't be worried about that.
Slattery, Henry 20 185 cm 86 kg 22/1/1986 - Running: Already a strong lad, we need our #1 small defender to be able to run out games as much as anyone down back. Will constantly be getting the best small pocket forwards.
Slattery, Tyson 36 189 cm 81 kg 3/12/1990 - Not sure where he's at
Stanton, Brent 5 182 cm 82 kg 1/5/1986 - Running: He's a nuggety player who has an excellent tank but slow acceleration. Would prefer to see him pick up a yard or two of pace than focus on body building.
Still, Michael 35 194 cm 86 kg 24/3/1991 - S&C: potential KPP forward of the future means he needs to get as much meat on him as possible ASAP if he wants to challenge Neagle for a spot up at full forward.
Watson, Jobe 4 190 cm 91 kg 8/2/1985 - Running: Strong build, if it could be a bit bigger, but running should remain his focus as our #1 midfielder
Welsh, Andrew 12 188 cm 86 kg 11/2/1983 - Running: Similar to Prismall. Needs to make up for losing out on half a season and lot of the preseason of 09. Is a lighter framed midfielder but can survive the big hits.
Winderlich, Jason 8 188 cm 83 kg 10/10/1984 - Running: As our #1 speedster now Lovett's gone it's imperative he keeps up his awesome speed and stamina.
Zaharakis, David 11 182 cm 76 kg 21/2/1990 - S&C: Good season locked away in the gym should see him emerge as a stronger midfielder. Decent tank in him already so focusing on some mass shouldn't take too much away from his running ability

Thoughts?

I'll read your assessments of the players later Godzke but kudos for having a go! :thumbsu:

On Lonergan, Watson needs help, it's likely to come from Lonergan, Hocking or Myers in 2009 - the competition is hot! There is no negatives in the article, upper body strength will come, he is after all still only 22. He could play Luke Ball's role perfectly and it doesn't hurt that his kick is far more penetrative than Ball's!!! ;)

He's certainly already got the hard-nut characteristic! If he takes his game to the next level then the Dons could surprise quite a few in 2010!!!

Good read.

For Myers, I'd have Running (and a bit of S&C). Seems to be built fairly solid but after his bout on glandular fever and OP (?)*, I hope he gets back to normal weight and sorts out his groin issues.

*Not 100% he had OP, wouldn't mind someone of knowledge confirming this.

Just come back from a week's holiday at Breakas Resort in Port Vila -Vanuatu and Paddy Ryder was there with his pregnant partner (I know too much info).
Paddy seems to be a very shy, quiet, modest bloke.
He looked very relaxed - but it is a hard place not to be.
I am a Crows supporter and my daughter's partner is a Power Player (no names mentioned) and both were there with my wife, my son & I on the trip so it was an interesting combination.
We did not chat to him though, just said g'day.
Wanted to give him his space.
OUCH!!!

I can only imagine the spiels given by a father telling his daughter as she grows up to make sure she finds the right guy ... and she does that to you. Hahahaha that must piss you off to no end.

As for Paddy, glad he's relaxing. I hope all the lads are ... because there's a fair few of them need to work their arses off extra hard over the pre-season. Paddy just needs to spend the summer in the gym.

I am just going to go through where I would like each player to be at the start of the season in 2010.

Jarrod Atkinson: pushing for a senior spot.
Tom Bellchambers: Learning his craft in the magoos under Laycock.
Christian Bock: Learning at Bendigo Bombers and eating lots of KFC :D
Bryce Carrol: Delisted
Darcy Daniher: Pushing for a senior position, hopefully one of Monfries/Williams.
Alwyn Davey: Gaining his 2007 form where he was kicking roving goals.
Courtenay Dempsey: To continue growing and become an even better player in 2010.
Ricky Dyson: To hold his position and prove not to be a 'one season wonder'
Dustin Fletcher: Do what he does for another year, and to have a baby boy too :p
Thomas German: Delisted
Scott Gumbleton: To get out on the park at either AFL or VFL level.
David Hille: To provide a strong partnership with Paddy Ryder in the ruck.
Heath Hocking: Have a break out year as an in and under ball winner.
Cale Hooker: Not sure what to make of Cale for next year. Reserves?
Bachar Houli: To find himself a position and make it his own.
Michael Hurley: To hold down CHB/FB with Pears and win rising star.
Leroy Jetta: To do something at senior level.
Kade Klemke: Delisted
Jason Laycock: To play reserves and teach his craft to T'Bell.
Matthew Lloyd: Retired (Forcefully )
Sam Lonergan: To become a strong in and under ball winner at reserves level and force his way into the senior side.
Andrew Lovett: Traded to St.Kilda
Nathan Lovett-Murray: To provide the EFC with a strong utility.
Scott Lucas: Retired
Rhys Magin: Delisted (Gold Coast Perhaps )
Adam Mcphee: To play some consistent football when we are playing well.
Mark Mcveigh: Hold down BP or return to his best midfield days from early 2008.
Angus Monfries: To learn how to crumb a goal consistently and kick 30+ goals.
David Myers: To become a regular inside ball winner with Watson and Hocking.
Jay Nash: Traded to Port Adelaide
Jay Neagle: To have a good pre season and kick 30+ goals.
Tayte Pears: To continue his rapid development and keep improving.
Brent Prismal: For him to fully find his feet at EFC and push for a top 5 spot at the B&F.
Michael Quinn: To learn his craft on a HFF at Bendigo.
Kyle Rimers: To return to his best days as a utility.
Paddy Ryder: To form a strong partnership with David Hille in the ruck.
Hayden Skipworth: Retired
Henry Slattery: To show the naysayers he can play as a small defender.
Tyson Slattery: To push for senior selection by round 11.
Brent Stanton: To push for AA selection as a ball winning midfielder.
Michael Still: To continue learning his craft at Bendigo.
Jobe Watson: To make the AA team and push for a top 10 Brownlow position.
Andrew Welsh: Return to his best days as a small defender or tagger.
John Williams: Delisted
Jason Winderlich: To continue improving on his stellar 2009 and aim for a top 20 brownlow finish.
David Zaharakis: To aim for a consistent senior berth in 2010.

I know some of these are realistic and some of these are not so realistic, but I would like to see all of these guys aim for these.

Swap McPhee with one of Myers, Zaka, NLM, Lonergan, Houli, Jetta. That's depth.

According to the link, there are a number of sides who start their break after we do.

We take break on the 22nd ... Hawks 24th and Melb/Carl the 18th.

Return to training and then 30 days to the first NAB cup game.
