lol...im sorry, the only hip-hop i like is hilltop hoods, and you prob dont rate them, so ill head out the back door quietly ....

a tribe called quest's ablum the low end theory's is about one of the best hip hop albums ever.

then of course theres RATM, evil empire is a mad hip hop album.

public enemy etc all kick arse.

Too bad that isnt Hip Hop.

Now off with your make up Rock Boy ;)
Anyways.

Biggie and Nas had a sort of fued. They were both after the crown of King of Brooklyn.

Thats until Biggie released:

Big Poppa: http://youtube.com/watch?v=8qUnW22ehio

The flow is unbelievable.

As Puff says "I can never leave the house without a Biggie CD".

Another track, possibly, actually **** possible, definitely my favourite is:

Biggie - Juicy: http://youtube.com/watch?v=qFB8UZjYJwk

Ultimate track for flow, rhyme etc etc.

Killed this track and IMO the greatest Hip Hop song.

Another one for you n00bz, you will love this, BIG at his wittiest.\

Gotta remember, this is off the top of his head, freestyling, the greastest mark of respect for me is when an artist can rhyme at the top of his head for 1 min+.

Listen to this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pYMDsVnjluY - Go to about the 1.48 min mark and listen up, B...I...G I wish you didnt D....I....E.

"Oh my god, I'm dropping s**t like a pigeon
I hope your listening, smacking babies at their crisinen"

Oh s**t? damn straight.

And for his probably most famous track, have a listen to this, just mind blowing stuff.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_S1fUyW6riE

Classic.

Massive fan.

Talking to a guy who loves that kind of s**t.

Hoods:

*Recapturing the Vipe
*The Hard Road
*The Calling
*What a Great Night(Not that good though, catchy)
*Illusionary Lines
*Testimonial Year
*Clown Prince
*Stopping All Stations
*Circuit Breaker
*The Bluee Blooded

etc etc.

Rate them the greatest hip hop artists in Australia, followed closely by BlissNEso and The Funkoars.

Love the Aussie scene ATM.

I'll do a section dedicated to Aussie Hip Hop when the thread reaches 1,000 replys.

Anyways I gave you a small insight into Biggie, Fury, if you love the Hoods get into the three I mentioned.

Nas:

The guy was a freak. He changed and started producing s**t albums after s**t.

His first album though Illmatic is the greatest of all time.

Some of his tracks that I love are:

One Love: http://youtube.com/watch?v=TpRjuGeftCM

Kid was talented and real young when he dropped this album and track.

Hear him out, great story telling in this track and his slow and lyrics are downright awesome.

Last verse I love the best.

"Sometimes I sit back with a buddha sack
mind's in another world thinking how can we exist through the facts
written in school text books, bibles, et cetera
**** a school lecture, the lies get me vexed-er
So I be ghost from my projects
I take my pen and pad for the week
and hittin nails while I'm sleepin
A two day stay, you may say I need the time alone
to relax my dome, no phone, left the 9 at home
You see the streets have me stressed somethin terrible
****in with the corners have a fellow up in Bellevue
or h.d.m., hit with numbers from 8 to 10
a future in a maximum state pen is grim
So I comes back home, nobody's helpin shorty doo-wop
Rollin two phillies together in the Bridge we called 'em oowops
He said, "Nas, ****** could be bustin' off the roof
so I wear a bullet proof and pack a black tres-deuce"
He inhaled so deep, shut his eyes like he was sleep
Started coughing when I peeked to watch me speak
I sat back like the mack, my army suit was black
We was chillin' on these bitches where he pumped his loose cracks
I took an l when he passed it, this little bastard
keeps me blasted he starts talkin mad s**t
I had to school him, told him don't let ****** fool him
'cos when the pistol blows that's when a murder be the cool one
Tough luck when ****** are struck, families ****ed up
could've cought your man, but didn't look when you bucked up
Mistakes happen, so take heed never bust up
if the crowd catch him solo, make the right man bleed
shorty's laugh was cold blooded as he spoke so foul
Only twelve trying to tell me that he liked my style
Then I rose, wiping the blunts ash from my clothes
then froze only to blow the herb smoke through my nose
and told my little man that i'm a go cyprose
there's some jewels in the skull that he can sell if he chose
words of wisdom from nas try to rise up above
keep an eye out for jake shorty what
one love"

Another classic track from Nas.

If you light up one night, chuck on either Nas or Bob Marley.

Thats my advice.

One Time for Your Mind: http://youtube.com/watch?v=wMAiKq9X0WI

His lyrical ability is that of Daniel Wells X 10.

"But I'ma lamp, cuz a crime couldn't beat a rhyme
****** catching 3 to 9's, Muslims yelling free the mind
And I'm from Queensbridge, been to many places
as a kid when I would say that out of town, ****** chased us
But now I know the time, got a older mind
Plus control a nine, fine, see now I represent mine"

Big L is special to me.

He's like a Smith and Biggie like a Wells.

So close but ones just ahead IMO.

Big L had a good rep from his freestyling days, could beat most if not all. But his punch lines were his greatest weapon.

Probably not as versitile as BIG but could hold his own agaisnt anyone.

Three tracks I'd reccomend are:

MVP: http://youtube.com/watch?v=SfXqwviDHIM

"And everytime I'm jammed, I always find a loop-hole
I got a crime record longer than Manute Bol"

:D

"Battles I loose none I make crues run
I get fools done, got ten fingers but only use one"

Oh no he didnt?

Another track would be:

Big L Street Struck: http://youtube.com/watch?v=eTqSsLoNhwI

L tells the truth for the young kiddies in the streets, tells them how it is/was and how to get out of it.

"Before the rap contract, I was sellin crack
Stay strapped with a Mac, I was into alla that
I started rappin and got nice as hell
If it wasn't for this I might be doin life in jail
And some of my peeps are still in the game sellin 'caine
If that's what you gotta do to maintain, go 'head and do your thang
But with the cash profit make an investment
And try not to go to the grave like the rest went
Cause you can be rich with crazy loot, own a house and nine cars
What good is that, if you're dead, or behind bars?
And yo it's not even funny
I've seen a lot of my peers give up they careers for some fast money
They could've been boxers, ballplayers or rap singers
Instead they bank robbers and crack slingers
Aiyyo they used to be legit kids, now they corrupt
They had dreams but gave em up cause they street struck"

Magical words from a God.

If I wasnt biased towards my man BIG, I'd rate him the greatest.

I'm a pretty big hip hop fan. I used to love Eminem and Dr Dre, neither produce the records they used to although word is Eminem may be back on the scene. "Dr. Dre 2001" was one of my favourites and i had pretty much every Eminem album. That song "Stan" has to go down as one of the greatest.

These days Timbaland is producing the best records and has worked with some of the biggest artists. Believe it or not i love fiddy cent and Akon as well. I thought the Get Rich or Die Trying album from the 50 movie was awesome.

My favourite hip hop album would have to go to The Notorious B.I.G with "Duets - the final chapter" that has some ridiculous tunes. I'm assuming you like that one Mc CrazyQ ?

Lucky you're a Roo fan coz I'd spit on you ;)

They killed Biggies version of Nasty girl and made it into a run-down RnB wannabe song.

Seriously, I know most of them knew the man, but Big would not have liked it one bit.

50? the man has next to no talent, seriously, the Hilltop Hoods, from Australia, know more about the scene than he does and can actually back it up with quality lyrics which can match many around the world.

Akon's alright to listen to when nothings on.

I'm more into the underground/non-commercially known stuff.

Eminem had/has the talent, yet wastes it everytime and lost respect from the real experts years ago.

Q, how could you even try to start a HipHop history lesson with Nas, BIG and L?

Sure they were big in that 90's Thug Style That's like starting the history of Rock with ACDC.

Afrika Bambaata, Afrika Islam, Alien Ness, Big Bank Hank, Brothers Disco/Funky, Busy Bee, the entire Zulu Nation Crew, DMC, Grand Wizard Theodore, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Kool DJ Herc, Kool Moe Dee...these are the real GODFATHERS the start of hip hop in the five borough's of NYC.

Then we get KRS One, LL Cool J...god this could go all night.

A little viewing and listening.

Afrika Bambaataa: http://youtube.com/watch?v=POviI6ty98s
Kool Moe Dee: http://youtube.com/watch?v=IuDL-TcKXoY
KRS One: http://youtube.com/watch?v=1VRZq3J0uz4
Grandmaster Flash: http://youtube.com/watch?v=k3kRuJhIVIo

I dont mean to 'dis' your favourite Hip Hop artists but you should get to know your history.

Dont worry, I've heard most of those artists.

KRS-One is a real favourite of mine.

But when it comes to end for me, the best three are the ones I mentioned.

I agree with the non-commercial stuff - i was once looking for a Snoop Dogg song and downloaded "beautiful" by mistake (n hated it). A few years later he released that song and it became huge, i dunno how the freak i managed to get it so early but it was an cr@p song that was over played on the radio so it sold well.

Eminem used to be awesome, as did Dr Dre... Eminem's lyrics were the best and he was real... these days he doesn't give a sh*t. I've always liked 50 cent, pretty much everybody hates him though so your not alone.

I'm not a huge fan of Aussie Hip Hop - i much prefer Scribe to any aussie hip hop bands. I guess Hilltop Hoods are alright, i actually saw them live and thought they were unbelievable, that's always a good sign

I realllyyy don't like Kanye West though, don't like the sound of his voice or the music that he releases.

Also a favourite of mine, Kool G Rap.

Fast life with Nas and the great man is a great track, top 5 for mine.

EDIT: Eric B and Rakim are tops aswell.

This is all a conspiracy of Q's to overtake NickRooboy in posts this week.I'm on to you!
But to add to the thread the only hip hop to have graced my mp3 is House of pain and on occasion 'Changes' by tupac.
I guess since i grew up in the 90's where it's all about shootings, booties and reverse racism, I dont have as much respect for it as it may well deserve.Happy to be shown the light though.

Q i really can't pick three and i find it hard to compare late 70's stuff with the east coast 90's, west coast 90's and the enduring work of Tribe, beastie boys, the 'alternative hip hop' crews like solesides, j5, the roots etc.

but three standouts for me

Q-Tip
The Gift of Gab (Blackalicious)
Lyrics Born

gee, that was difficult!

Dont worry man, I'm only 1 year older than you.

Start with Big L.

You will appreciate his lyrics, punchlines and flow.

cheers for the unintentional reminder Wombles, Sabotage and intergalactic are actually some of favourite tracks. Intergalactic happens to be the only song i will do the funky robot to, it's worth being pelted with fruit.

Yeah, I get what you're saying.

The Roots, Beastie Boys and J5 are tops, IIRC J5 came here 1-2 years ago? poor memory though.

Heard some of The Gift of Gab, he's really good.

Not a fan of my big 3?

Love this: http://youtube.com/watch?v=yFjsVAP3KxQ

Huh. I always got a 30's vibe from you probably the late night stories you've entertained us with.Either way i'm open any tracks you suggest i'll give this Big L (if that is his real name) a spin.

I see your point Dude (lebowski reference).

Its so easy and so common to confuse your bullshit macho Gangta rap with the politically and socially aware work of the early days and little bits since.

When i have more energy i'll do my best to spell it out :)

off point, everyone should admire the 'beatboxer' Rahzel, this guy makes every single noise you hear with his own body, check it; http://youtube.com/watch?v=EX0sByag4Z4
