I never use to mind poker as the occassional drinking game with mates, but the recent explosion in its popularity through the widespread 'professionalisation' of the game has really given me the shits.
There is nothing worse than flicking on the teev on a Saturday evening only to find fat slobs, guys wearing stupid sunglasses, and a highly annoying american commentator on the screen pissfarting around all night long in a spectacle that can only be equated to watching paint dry.
Poker as a game is okay - and only okay. I'm not a fan of gambling at all really, but poker irks me inparticular.
The fad, as it can be best described as, is something equivalent to yo-yo's, hoola-hoops, girls who have never heard of the Ramones wearing Ramones t-shirts, and emo music. It's the pits. It sucks. It is a waste of time. Why, pray tell, would a game (granted it does require some skill) that relies heavily on chance, be held in such high regard - high enough regard that people see fit to professionalise it.
In summary I guess the crap spectacle, the glorifying of a destructive habit and iconising of these so-called 'professionals' really are the things that annoy me about poker.
Please, enlighten me to its allure. I'm keen to know! I won't bag you or anything (I'm sure I'll be bagged for my views). I simply seek understanding and enlightenment.
