What? "Getting away with one" in this case would be an opposing player being fouled in the area and getting a yellow for diving.

You having a legitimate penalty waved away is due to the amount of dives you've gotten away with in the box. Cahill should have been red carded (second yellow) for his dive, but he wasn't. Cesc should have had a penalty, but he didn't. One situation would have benefitted you, one wouldn't have. Swings and round abouts.

I'm not even arguing that, I don't think it's a relevant incident.

But any chance to bring it up, hey?

Not really. We were talking about Chelsea players and their perceived diving. I brought up a Chelsea player who did dive and is contributing to that image..

No, the topic was occasions a ref has given a yellow to a fouled player rather than giving the penalty...
I don't really see the huge difference in the incidents. Cahill didn't get a yellow for an actual dive. Again, swings and roundabouts. You get penalised for legitimate fouls sometimes, and sometimes blatant dives are ignored..

A few interesting tidbits I read today.

Figo is apparently going to challenge Blatter for the FIFA presidency.

Guinea and Mali will literally have to draw lots to determine who progresses to the knockout phase of the Africa Cup of Nations. Absolutely trivial that drawing lots will decided who progresses and who gets knocked out in a major FIFA tournament.

i've watched bits and pieces of afcon. it's insulting to other major tournaments to call it a major tournament. very few highlights.

I hope Figo gets it. The man has class.

Just about anyone would be better than Blatter surely? :D

I like Figo's quote here. Just seems like a guy who's sick of the growing list of controversies in the game today.

"Football has given me so much during my life and I want to give something back to the game," the ex-Portugal international, who won 127 caps, said in a CNN interview.

"I look at the reputation of Fifa right now and I don't like it. Football deserves better. In recent weeks, months, and even years, I have seen the image of Fifa deteriorate.

Apparently Ginola is also going to run for it.

Had a quick look over the results - so many draws! Plenty of 1-1 results with a few 1-0 and 2-1 wins mixed in.

I'm just happy Cisse's heading back (due to Senegal being knocked out). No such luck for your Ivorian boys though mate. ;)

Heard it this morning. Would be very interesting if he does get in, I think he has done some work in promoting the game, including opening a football academy. FIFA presidency is a different kettle of fish, but between the current candidates, I would back him. Definitely is sick and tired of the corruption, as we all are.

Then again, I also heard that Blatter is apparently very popular with many of the football associations. I think we all know why that is the case (because daring to defy him will lead to some nasty consequences.)

Also, have seen the Cup of Nations (Algeria), and dear lord, that tournament is naff. Boring, boring games. Craptacular Quality (See the Mahrez Goal. It was a good finish, but that defending... they didn't even see him coming. [On a Leicester note: He needs to work on his celebrations, he just looked as if the goal was offside]) Worst of all, it takes away your African players every 2 years (Made worse when they decided to make it ever odd year to avoid the World Cup, meaning they just had 3 Cups in 4 years.) I swear some of these games are rigged, how many naff 1-1 games has their been? See? We have goals and draws, the teams are close in quality, could've gone either way! Exciting! Not.

No offense to any Africans here, but some of the crap that goes on with African Football really makes you wonder. Between the crappy qualifying system, the lack of accountability in ensuring you don't play suspended players, and the fact that everything is subject to change (The tournament was meant to be held in Morocco for a start. Morocco didn't want to hold the tournament yet because of ebola fears. What do the CAF do? Give the tournament to EG and suspend Morocco.) I think they seem to be the only continent that is going backwards in terms of quality.

It's like night and day to the Asian Cup. No fans, bored looking players, dour affairs. Say what you will about comparing Australia to Equilateral Guinea, but I honestly think this is a result of holding it 3 times in 4 years. Africa usually has colour, and its'c clearly lacking here.

Because of how the FIFA rankings work, African nations are constantly ranked higher because of the number of 'significant' games. (Does anyone honestly believe that no Asian nation is top 50, yet the likes of Senegal, Guiena, Cape Verde (they're a weird one to rate to be honest), and Mali are higher than Japan, South Korea and Australia?) Rankings are meant to be naff, but for work permit purposes, your team is meant to be top 70 if they want to have any chance of getting a permit. So, Aussies will get rejected, but if you're from Mali, you're just in luck! It's one of the reasons you sometimes had African teams in the top 10 (Like Egypt, and they never even qualified for a World Cup).

Hope the CAF wakes up and makes this 4 years. Some of the stuff going on was painful, and I wanted Algeria to do well... (But considering their use of Mahrez, I almost wished for them to get knocked out so we could have him back. If we have to let him go, let him play at least, not to warm your bench.)

Also, you thought Mail and Guinea going to lots was bad? Imagine if Cameroon got another goal. You could've had all four teams on the same number of points, goals fore, goals against, with the same results against each other, which would've gone down to lots. (For the record, all the matches finished 1-1 with the exception of the Cameroon-Ivory Coast game.) Also, they have delayed the drawing of the lots... can you imagine the chaos that would ensure? Accusation of favouritism, possible bribes going on? Those sadists out there would probably claim that the drawing of the lots would be the most exciting thing this tournament.

Also: Another Leicester note: Gradel got the Ivory Coast Winner. Heck yeah.

Cup of Nations needs a serious review. Thank goodness we spared Schlupp from this. I hope we get Mahrez back soon.

AFCON has been a farce ever since it got awarded to Equatorial Guinea. Think Qatar WC x10! Weather has been quite poor, a lot of games played in the rain with humidity. And yet again it showcased how poor African nations are at producing defenders and keepers!

pantskyle I'll move it to here because I'm more than happy to have the discussion, just don't want it to take away from the transfers.

What's Powell shown to date to make you think he's currently any good?

This was in extraordinary circumstances though, they didn't win the initial bid.

Since I'm on my phone so I can't make the match day thread good to see us playing a tribute to the two toon supporters who died on the Malaysian airlines flight in the 17th minute. @nufc_tiger

Saw something about that last night. Really nice touch by Hull - I think I read it would be 2 minutes of applause as well due to a Hull fan passing away on boxing day or something?

kicked the ball really hard once and it went into the net i presume

How is that breaking news?

Blatter has been a tosser for quite a while

You couldn't make it up. Heading up an organization that has allegedly accepted bribes which ultimately resulted in Australia not being awarded the World Cup hosting rights, and now here he is expressing his dismay that we haven't yet hosted a tournament.
