EVERYONE at the ground heard the siren of course, the Pies players stopped and started to celebrate, the North players who had posession paused, and seeing no reaction from the ump continued on until they scored.

THEN the ump called time.

I would NEVER call an umpire a biased bald faced cheat soooooo maybe he was struck with an unknown 2 minute deafness caused by the iminent prospect of a Pie flag

When questioned about it the then VFL said "play continues until the umpire hears the final siren."

This was the root cause of umps getting miked up with earplugs.

That wasn't the reserves. That was the night competition grand final in 1979 at Waverley under lights. Back then it was a seperate comp played on Tuesday nights. Kerry Good marked and kicked the winning goal for North after the siren.

Yep. Despite being a nothing competition, we seriously needed a bit of silverware at the time and it was pretty disgraceful to have it stolen by a deaf umpire.
