Crows name new coach for 2015

The Adelaide Crows have named Hayden Sumner as their new senior coach for 2015 after the surprise sacking of Brenton Sanderson in November. A huge shock was sent through the AFL community with the sudden sacking of Sanderson, and many believe it was led by the Adelaide Crows playing group.

The playing squad has been represented by Patrick Dangerfield and he has assured us, that the decision was clearly by the club and not the players.
The club had the idea of going with a fresh start, in which started with CEO Steven Trigg departing the club after a long tenure in charge and with Andrew Fagan the new CEO.

Hayden Sumner has a bright future ahead of him, and he brings a lot of new ideas and vision that we see could win us a flag in the not so distant future. He may not be the most experienced coach that was available, but he had a vision and we have full trust that the players can buy in and play for this man, new CEO Andrew Fagan said at the press conference.

ROUND 1 - RICHMOND VS ADELAIDE Etihad STADIUM

Adelaide travel to Melbourne in their first week of the season to take on a side in which played finals last season but has had trouble starting their previous seasons off in Richmond. A massive task first up for the Crows in which they'll be looking to win in Melbourne. Adelaide has named a fairly strong line-up for their match with off season recruit, Kyle Cheney making his debut for the club after crossing from the Hawks during the trade period.
Their strong forward line looks dangerous and will want to get off to a fast start to the year with guys like newly annointed Captain Tex Walker as the main focal point, small livewire Eddie Betts at his feet, Josh Jenkins playing the forward ruck role and Tom Lynch roaming the wins. But it's the Crows young backline after the retierment of club champion Ben Rutten that will be most under the pump in 2015. All-Australian Daniel Talia has been outstanding the last 2 years, while Kyle Cheney brings a bit of experience playing for the Hawks and Demons. But it will be guys like Luke Brown and Kyle Hartigan that will need to step up this season.
Matt Crouch will start as the sub, while he's brother will start on the interchange.

Coaches thoughts on the game

Tough to not get the win tonight in Melbourne. In a high scoring affair against a quality opposition and a massive crowd for a Sunday afternoon match just over 44,121 fans rocked up to Etihad Stadium to see a blockbuster. Both sides were great, and both sides showed the 44 thousand strong a entertaining first match of the season. I thought our boys played well in the end, but we didn’t get the win which is disappointing as you want to perform in Melbourne as much as we can. Tex our captain stood up today and kicked 5 goals, but it was our defence that let us down with both Lloyd and Vickery kicking 5 goals. Take away those 10 goals and we win the match. Talia did a good job containing Riewoldt for most of the match, but it was the guys like Hartigan and Cheney who needed to do a bit more. But it wasn’t the defenders, every player on the field takes the blame for poor team defence to allow the Tigers such easy ball movement.

Nathan VanBerlo came back strong after missing the entire 2014 season with a raptured achillies, while Matthew Wright found some early season form showing glimpses of his 2012 season with 3 goals in the opening game. Ricky Henderson and Brodie Smith played a lot more in the midfield with both players massing big numbers 23 and 22 possessions, with Henderson having 7 clearances. Josh Jenkins played one of his better games for the club finishing with 14 possessions, 8 hit-outs and 3 goals in what earned him some coaches points.

Overall, fairly happy with how the guys played in their first hitout of the season, but disappointed in the loss and move onto Carlton next Sunday at Adelaide Oval.

Round 2 - Adelaide vs Carlton Adelaide Oval

We’re welcomed back to Adelaide Oval in Round 2 of the season with a match against Carlton on the line. It’s good to be playing our first home game of the season against one of the oldest clubs in the game, we don’t get to play the Blues much here in Adelaide, the players and coaches will be wanting to put on a good performance for their fans.
We won’t be changing much from last week as we believe the squad we had playing was determined enough and played some good football for most of that match, but was overrun and lost by 2 points. Only the 1 change to the side with Matthew Janesch being omitted after a poor performance last week, and Mitch Grigg comes into the side.
We’ll try a few different things that we’ve been training for over the summer, some players in different positions and to give the opposition a bit of a headache to see what we’re going to do next, but other than that, I urge our fans to get to Adelaide Oval on Sunday and watch the boys for the first time this year.

Coaches Thoughts on the game

Amazing first quarter. We as a group really believed we should have come away with the win in Melbourne last week against the Tigers, but we let ourselves down when it came down to the dying seconds of that match. We as a coaching group reminded the players of the loss last week, in which to the players credit, really came out firing in the first quarter against the Blues. I thought we controlled the ball really well and score heavily kicking the opening 6 goals of the game.

Of course we knew the Blues would reply and come back at us, but to the boys credit we were in a similar position last week and got overrun, but this week we seemed to have handle the situation a lot better and we soldered on to kick the last 4 goals of the game to win by 18 points.
Again captain Text stood up for us today with another bag of 5 goals, taking his tally to 10 in the past 2 games. We tried a few different things with players playing in different positions and I was happy with Dangerfield’s game again this week. We played him permanently forward and was able to kick 3 goals along with his 22 positions and 7 tackles.

Sam Jacobs had a outstanding match in the midfield winning 24 hitouts and gaining 22 touches and 6 contested marks going up against Kreuzer and Warnock, I thought Jacobs really held his own and won the battle there. VanBerlo again won plenty of the ball, our defenders played a lot better this week. Everitt finished with 3 goals while Jones contributed with 2 but with Smith going down back after playing on the ball last week he provided plenty of run and attack with his 11 rebound’s, Andy Otten was good again with 20 posssessions, Cheney was solid with 14 touches and 5 uncontested marks.

Despite winning the game the Blues had more inside 50’s then us being behind by 8 but I was happy with the guys in the middle winning the clearances 33 to 25 against a quality midfield like Carlton’s with Judd, Gibbs, Murphy and Simpson in the middle.

Round 3 - Fremantle vs Adelaide Domain Stadium

With a 1-1 record heading into Round 3, we travel over to Domain Stadium to face 2013 Grand Finalists, Fremantle. The Dockers lost last week against the reigning premiers in Hawthorn but will be looking to get back on the winners board with a home ground win against the Crows.

Only 1 change to the side that defeated the Blues last weekend with Tom Lynch coming out of the team with a complaint on his quad during training. He’ll only most likely miss the 1 week, with Sam Kerridge coming into the side for the first time this year after a good SANFL showing last weekend. Kerridge brings ball winning ability and has the capabilities to drift forward and kick goals which we seen against the Kangaroos in 2013.

COACHES THOUGHTS

Incredible come back from our boys. Similar to the Richmond game in Round 1, but this time we were able to compose ourselves in the dying seconds of the game to pick up the much needed victory.
I thought the team started well, breaking even with the Dockers in the first quarter, but the team failed to do the fundamentals during the second term where we only scored the single behind while the Dockers were able to kick away to a 5 goal lead.
I had a big word with the boys at the half time break and we needed a lift from everyone on the field. The third quarter of this game has certainly got to be one of the best quarters you’ll ever see. High scoring, high intensity and both sides eager to win the ball. I was impressed that we outscored them 9 goals to 7 in the third term, but giving away that lead in the second quarter made us behind the 8 ball once more.

Resilience and determination was shown by the playing squad heading into the last term and we were able to use our fitness and speed to run over the top to kick the last 5 goals of the game to run out winners by the narrowest of margins.
Taylor Walker was again sensational. Bagging 6 goals, his best return for the year and his 16th goal in just his 3rd game for the year, it’s what makes him such an easy choice for the Captaincy. If it wasn’t for Tex, we wouldn’t have won that match. Thommo re-lived some early days of his career, being able to push forward and kick 2 goals while Grigg, who played well as the sub last week, got a full game and played well with 2 important goals including the sealer.

Our midfielders have been important when pushed forward as we saw last week with Dangerfield pushing forward for 3 goals and now Thommo this week with 2 majors. Sam Kerridge was great today after returning back into the side after the first 2 weeks in the state league. I thought his job on Fyfe was outstanding and both players showed promise.

Coaches Thoughts

Pretty simple stuff here really. Have a look at the stats sheet and you tell me wether we can win a game after winning just 2 major stats which was the tackles and inside 50’s? Geelong just dominated the game and played it on their term. All of their stars played well, guys through the midfield like Bartel, Kelly, Motlop and Selwood. Then having guys like Clark and Hawkins down inside 50 who kicked 9 goals between them. Our players just weren’t switched on today and we got shown up by a better side on the day.

Happy with the efforts of some of our players today. Only a handful can really hold their heads up high, but this is a team sport, so those guys, even though played a good game, aren’t coming away with a grin today. Smith was prolific in the midfield 33 touches, 9 inside 50s and 4 tackles for the game, he provided plenty of run and carry. VanBerlo was good again for the 3rd straight week, Dangerfield battled hard all day with 24, 6 tackles. But I just think we had too many passangers and not enough players playing for each other today and it showed going down by 26 points in front of our home crowd.
Not many positives at all, we’ll review this game, I’ll ask the players how we can possibly win a game when we only have 2 major stat winners and we’ll ask for a response on the training track this week.

Round 5 - Melbourne vs Adelaide - MCG

Adelaide come into their Round 5 clash with the Demons having made 3 changes to the side. Defenders Rory Laird and Luke Brown have come into the side as has ball winning midfielder Matt Crouch. Rory Laird will play his first game of the season after having an injury interrupted preseason. With the small men coming in, tall men come out of the side. Luke Lowden after playing his debut for the Crows, and a solid one at that kicking 2 goals, comes out of the side, as does defender Kyle Hartigan who has seemed to have been put down the pecking order by 1st round draft selection Jake Lever as the Crows number 2 backman behind Daniel Talia. The sub from last week Brodie Martin has also been omitted after limited game time.

Coaches Thoughts

We asked our players to perform throughout the week and training and asked them some really hard questions about the way they wanted to play this game and see if we had 22 contributors on the ground each and every week. Great response from the playing group today. I felt like we had everyone contribute to the game and we saw the result a 26 point win in Melbourne.

Completely turned the stats sheet around from last week. We won most of the crucial stats on the ground and most likely than not, you’ll win games when you win those stats. I was happy with the spread of goal kickers this week, the previous 4 weeks it has seemed to be a little too much pressure and left all up to Tex to kick our goals, but the boys found other avenues to goal today even though the captain still kicked his 3. I asked a lot of Jenkins throughout the week and he replied in fashion with what I believe was his best game for the year. 12 touches, 12 marks, 17 hitouts and 4 goals certainly provided plenty on the day. Betts got on the scoreboard after a very quiet start to the year. Rory Laird came back into the side and provided plenty for us in the back half, picking up 19 touches, 4 tackles and 9 rebounds, good to have him back in the side for his first game of the year. Thompson, Sloane and Dangerfield all have excellent matches and found plenty of the ball. First few rounds it was up to guys like VanBerlo, Henderson and Mackay to do most of the work, but our stars were able to find a bit of form today, so hopefully that win can spur the playing group back together and get back onto the way we wanna play as a football club.

I thought we were a little slow coming out of the blocks tonight. Collingwood was able to jump us early on in the first quarter. They were harder at the ball and the contest. Guys like Pendlebury, Sidebottom and Swan set them a-light in the first quarter, but to the credit of the playing group, after half time we were able to get ourselves in the game during basically level going into the last quarter. Credit to our fitness over the preseason we were able to run out the game kicking 6.1 to 3.3 in the last quarter to run away with a solid 17 point victory.

The win now sees us sitting with a 4-2 record after 6 rounds sitting middle table with a lot of teams. It’s crucial that we win against the sides who are in the same position as us at the moment to get the upper hand come the pointy end of the season.

I was very pleased with the way that Sam Jacobs handled himself against the likes of Witts, Grundie and White. He didn’t have much help in the ruck tonight as Jenkins played mainly forward as we isolated Jenkins in the square, but Jacobs answered with a best on ground performance racking up 21 touches, 7 marks, 26 hitouts and going forward to kick 2 goals. I was impressed with the midfield, as guys like Dangerfield (17 possessions, 2 goals), Sloane (17 possessions, 4 clearances) and Scott Thompson (17 possessions, 2 tackles) all had relatively quiet games to their standards.

The two Crouch brothers were working in the midfield with plenty of power and ball winning, with Brad picking up 31 touches and 5 tackles and Matt had a run away from the vest picking up 22 touches and 7 clearances.

Only a couple of bad things from the game tonight and one of those was the injury to David Mackay. He played a great game before his injury, but he got a whack in the jaw and we’ve been told that he has a facial fracture. He’ll be expected to miss up to 4-6 weeks. Ricky Henderson was also reported in an eye gouging incident.

Coaches Thoughts

unfortunately, we played catch up football right from the beginning of the contest. I thought this was a perfect opportunity for the club to go up against one of the contenders this year but we just gave them too much of a head start to really challenge them.

In the end I thought the guys really did get into the game well in that third term, we started to get on top of the contest but just lacked the polish going forward I thought. We allowed guys like Harvey and DalSanto too much of the ball through the midfield, and Harvey hurt us going forward as well providing to be the difference between the two sides at the end of the day.

From our point of view, that’s another opportunity lost where we were in position to win the game at the end of the match. Dangerfield was our best player racking up plenty of touches, while I think our defenders certainly got plenty of the ball considering the amount of times the ball went into the forward half. Was happy with the guys like Cheney, Laird, Jaensch and Talia.
Was fairly happy with the debut of young Harry Dear who was rookie promoted during the week after having a wonderful start to the year in the SANFL kicking 23 goals in 6 games. He was rewarded with good form and came in after the late with drawl from Eddie Betts this morning. Dear finished 6 possessions and kicked 3.1 for the night. Not a lot of the ball, but got himself into plenty of scoring positions.

Our night in general was a missed opportunity, and we are now sweating on the tribunal with 2 players, Matt Crouch and Andy Otten being reported during the match. Crouch made slight contact to an AFL umpire while Otten has been sighted for charging after laying a late bump on North Melbourne’s Lindsay Thomas.

Coaches Thoughts

It’s always good to get a win against the cross town rivals. My first showdown in charge and we spoke last week about our first quarters when we gave North Melbourne a 6 goal lead. We talked about that again before the bounce and the boys really came out of the blocks firing today. 7 goal first term really set us up for this victory as we managed to lead for most of the game. A huge crowd of 51,500 people came for the first showdown in 2015, and as a Crows home game, the supporters really made some noise out there today.

I was impressed by 2nd gamer Harry Dear. He’s come into the side at the loss of Eddie Betts who tore his quad at training a fortnight ago, Harry has come into the side after kicking 23 goals in the SANFL in the first 6 weeks, and has now kicked 3 against North Melbourne and a handful of 5 against the Power today. He is a goal kicking machine who is a certain starter each week now. He doesn’t get much of the ball, only 8 touches again today, but if he is going to kick 5 goals with every 8 possessions he gets then he’ll be a massive weapon in our tilt for finals this year.
Walker played a 2nd role for us, after taking the best defender it allowed Dear to kick those goals. But the captain was good again today having 13 possessions and kicking 4.2 for the afternoon, which I’m pretty sure has him in the top 3-5 for the Coleman medal.

We had an even contribution today, even from the guys like Ellis-Yolmen who came in for his first game of the season. Due to injuries and suspensions he was able to get his chance and he provided for the club. Guys coming back from suspensions and injury now have work to do to earn their spots back.
I was happy with the 19 point win which now cements us in the top 8 with a 5-3 record after 8 rounds.

Young gun Crow signs on

Young Adelaide midfielder/defender Brodie Smith has agreed to a new term deal staying with the club over the next 2 years. Smith has been one of the Crows better players to begin 2015, and after 8 solid games he has put pen to paper to stay with the Crows.

Adelaide coach Hayden Sumner said that Smith’s signature was certainly something they needed to get done quickly. “You never know anymore with the introduction of free agency, so to get Brodie’s signature in the first half of the season is a burden off everyone’s shoulders. Brodie loves the club, and he has been in the top 4-5 players at the club this year, so there’s no doubt the club is happy for him to stay over the next 2 years, He is a deadly accurate kick, can carry the ball and is pivotal in our attack going forward.
