Our second Friday night match of the year and this time against one of the competitions best sides this year. It was an awesome experience tonight, and a wonderful result beating the Dockers by 19 points in front of a healthy crowd of 45,000.

Fremantle had plenty of the ball and really dominated the match, but due to our credit, when we had the ball, our side was very damaging and scored at every possibly. The Dockers had 244 extra possessions than us tonight, 9 more tackles, and 22 more clearances and had 24 to 23 scoring shots then us, but we were still able to come away with a 3 goal win. It was our second half where we were able to get on top of the contest and kicked 9.2 to 4.7 in the last half which won us the game.

Josh Jenkins is really relishing as our key forward at the moment kicking another 3 goals tonight against quality opposition. It was good to see some of our midfielders hit the scoreboard again with Mackay (2 goals) and Brodie Smith (2 goals). I’ve always had a theory that the really good sides have midfielders who can kick multiple goals. Hawthorn in recent years have had Hodge, Lewis, Burgoyne and Isaac Smith who can go forward and be a match winner up forward. Sydney also have McGlynn, Jack, Hannebery who can all go forward and kick goals, so it was important for us to get scoreboard pressure from our midfielders.

Matt Crouch has continued his solid month of football, with another 29 possession game with 6 clearances and 7 inside 50s. Douglas found some form he had earlier in the year after a couple of quiet patches, picked up 24 touches, while Tom Lynch worked up from the forward 50 hard, with 25 possessions and a goal.

It was a solid win against the Dockers, and as we head into the ladder end of the season, we’re sitting in a comfortable position on the ladder, sitting in 5th, however we know we have a lot more work to do at the present time to make the finals.

Coaches Comments

Really proud of the efforts today against the Demons. We had a lot of contributors to the team today which landed us a handy 41 point win coming into the ladder stages of the season. Our boys never really looked back after the first quarter, which I thought showed leadership and commitment as a team to rally on and kick 11.5 to 7.1 in the second half of football.

Again though, it was another game for us where the Demons dominated the ball, had plenty more of the sherrin than us, but yet we still came away with a 7 goal win. Not too sure what that really comes down to in the end. I mean it’s a positive that we’re winning these games where we’re having less than 100 possessions per game then our opposition, but we’re still winning, but in saying that though, it’s also a bad thing that we seem to not get our hands on the ball as much as we’d like too.

Brad Crouch was a handful up forward for us today. We tried a few things today that we may have never really tried before and one of those was Crouch forward. I think he surprised a lot of his team mates and a lot of the supporters today booting a career best 5 goals from 21 disposals and 9 tackles. He was outstanding as was Brodie Smith who finished with 30 possessions and also kicking 3 goals. I mentioned in my presser last week that the good sides had midfielders who were able to kick goals on a regular basis, it was good to see Brad Crouch and Brodie Smith be able to kick 8 goals between them with the service of Eddie Betts, Matthew Wright, Josh Jenkins, Sam Jacobs and Matthew Jaensch who all finished with 2 goals apiece.

From the midfielders it was Matt Crouch and Richard Douglas who found plenty of the ball both with 35 possessions, while Rory Sloane, David Mackay and Brodie Smith all had 30+ possessions this afternoon.
As mentioned earlier, I thought this was the first 4 quarter performance from the club this year, and it came at a timely time with the finals just around the corner.

Coaches Comments

Second week in a row I thought our players were able to play a full 4 quarters of footy. Against a quality opposition in Collingwood at the MCG in front of a pretty healthy crowd, I thought our players really stood up again. Not to try and jinx anything at the moment, but seems we’re peaking right at the right time of the season. Being able to knock off the Pies in Melbourne by 51 points is an awesome feeling to have heading back to Adelaide.

It was the last quarter where we really shone though. We had a handy lead of about 5 goals heading into the last quarter, but with momentum swings, the game was always in the balance at that margin. At ¾ time I really challenged the playing group to finish the game off strongly and we got results. A 7 goal last term really set us up for the victory after the Pies could only manage 2.3 in the last.

And it was nice to see after 2 weeks of really getting dominated with possession, we were able to be the dominator with the ball this week. 466 disposals to us compared to 232 against the Pies, we really hung onto the ball and used our efficiency going forward.
Our twin towers up forward played a huge part in this win. 13 goals between them with Jenkins kicking 7 (a career best) while Walker finished with 6. Both of those guys played awesome games, as Jenkins has really stood up in the second half of this season, while Tex has been rather quiet in the last month or two, really stamped his authority on the contest again today.

Patrick Dangerfield found plenty of the pill and kicked 3 goals, while Smith continued his goal kicking form, kicking another 2 goals after 3 majors last week. Douglas was again amongst our top ball winners with 29 disposals, as was Sloane, whilst Brodie Smith as I mentioned before is starting to become a huge attacking weapon for us, finished with 27 possessions.

Coaches Comments

This was the ultimate test. Facing off against the reigning premiers from the last 2 years in the first week of the finals. A lot was writing on this match, with the winner being able to host a preliminary final and to also have a week off rewarding form earlier in the season with finishing in the top 4. But as mentioned, we came up against the best team in the competition over the last 5 years, so this was the ultimate test,

There were exciting match ups all over the ground today at the MCG. Dangerfield v Mitchell, Walker v Frawley, Jenkins v Lake, Talia v Roughead and Brodie Smith v Isaac Smith to name a few. Hawthorn I thought really had everything on the ball for the whole afternoon. They led at every stage of the game apart from the end result. Hawthorn led by 10 points at quarter time, they then extended their lead at half time to lead by 20 points at the main break.
In front of 64,311 at the MCG, if someone said we were 20 points within Hawthorn at half time, I would have taken it. We were still very much in the game at half time, and my half time address was very short and simple to the players. Keep playing like they were. Remember the game plan and stick to the fundamentals.

Hawthorn again kicked away and extended their lead to 29 points at the final change and it seemed at the time that we had to suit up again next week and I was thinking (lucky we have the double change). But then that’s where it began. Our players seemed to have found a new life, and was able to get their hands on the ball a lot more and really spread and ran their opponents off their feet. Hawthorn only managed 2.2 in the last term, and with their forward power, I thought keeping the reigning premiers to only 2 goals in a quarter is always a win. Our boys on the other hand were fantastic and arguably our best quarter of the season to end up kicking 8.3 in the last quarter to run away with a 8 point victory in what was an amazing comeback in a final that we’ve seen in a long time. Our captain, who was down for a certain period throughout the year really stood up when we needed him. Walker finished with 4.3 for the afternoon to be the highest scorer on the ground and to be the difference in the end. He finished with kicking the sealer late in the final quarter to give us that 8 point break.
Charlie Cameron was outstanding today. He is a big time player, as we seen in the Collingwood game in 2014, and now has pulled out a near best on ground performance for the semi final finishing with 29 possessions and kicking 2 goals. His partner in crime and mentor, Eddie Betts was right beside him throughout the day, and after having a very quiet year, finished with 27 touches and 2 goals.

Patrick Dangerfield really has stood up in the year just getting better and better racking up 30 possessions, 5 tackles, 8 clearances, 13 inside 50s and kicking a goal. David Mackay and Brodie Smith both finished with high disposals and really helped the team with meters gained today.

After that 8 point win against the Hawks, we are now able to enjoy a week off, but we’re certainly onto the next opponent which will be a preliminary final at Adelaide Oval. We’ll get the boys rested up and maybe get some guys from injury back for selection, although after that performance, I don’t see too much change to the side this week.

Preliminary Final vs West Coast - Adelaide Oval

Preliminary Final Preview

Adelaide and West Coast now find themselves just one win away from a Grand Final berth. The Crows last made it to the Grand Final 17 years ago in 1998 when they won the flag against North Melbourne. While the Eagles last made it to the Grand Final 9 years ago In 2006 when they won the flag against the Swans.

Adelaide have been highly competitive all year, finishing the minor round in the top 4. While West Coast only just made it into the finals, finishing the minor round in 8th position. In recent history very few sides have come from outside the top 4 to win a premiership, but West Coast are in form and ready to prove their doubters wrong against the highly fancied Adelaide side. Adelaide will be without important midfielder Scott Thompson again, while West Coast will not have the services of important tagger Scott Selwood as well as Sam Butler in defence.

What can I really say after that? I thought our boys really tried out there today but was beaten by the best side on the day. Simple really. We had a crack, but West Coast were the better side on the day and lucky for them they get to play off in a Grand Final next week. Our boys are shattered, they played really well but still weren't able to get the result in the end. The guys played excellent football throughout the year and I couldn't be happier with the players and what they've been able to achieve this season. We still have a really young group growing here at Adelaide, and to be able to see what the guys are capable off this early is going to be something we'll build on in the future and come back in 2016 bigger and better for the season ahead.

This will hurt for a while, but it's just the beginning of something special here at the Adelaide Crows.

Adelaide Crows 2015 AFL Trade Week

zjj8k4.jpg

After only a year on the Adelaide Crows list the unlucky Luke Lowden has found himself at a third home going to the Collingwood football club in the Adelaide crows first trade of the 2015 period. Lowden will look to bolster the ruck division of the Pies which is already strong with Grundy and Witts, while the Crows recieve pick 36 in the National Draft

Coaches Comments
Luke was a little unlucky due to injury this year. He played some solid games in the SANFL and did get some opportunity at senior level. But we as a side are looking to bolster our draft selections to use on some other big name players later on in the draft and Luke was the unlucky type of player to get moved on.

Adelaide Crows 2015 AFL Trade Week

f5bxuh.jpg

Port Adelaide's midfield will be bolster with the experience and ball winning ability with the addition of Scott Thompson in 2016. Thompson who has been a work horse for the Adelaide football club in recent years was not offered a contract from the Crows at the end of the season, but felt that he could go an extra few years. Thompson wasn't aware of any offers from other teams and wanted to stay in Adelaide, so the Crows and Power were able to put their differences aside and trade the 31 year old for Pick 42 in the National Draft

Coaches Comments
This was a huge decision for the player management team. Thommo has been a huge part of this club for a long period of time after coming to us from Melbourne back in 2005. Thommo came to myself and wanted to know where he was regarding the team structure, and as a club we felt like we were heading down more of a different path and Thommo was not in our plans. He said he felt good and his body would allow him to play a few more years, but with the rise of a few of our younger players, we felt that we needed to give Thommo his wishes and traded him to another club. We hope he can get a few years out with playing with the Power.
