I've got three weeks off work coming up over Christmas so I think it would be timely to make a purchase. What's good? What's not?

Thoughts?

Na haven't bought one yet but I am a big fan of Halo. PS3 has more capabilities i.e. Blue Ray etc but is it's online gaming as good as Xbox Live?

Negatory.
Positives for xbox in comparison:
Generally have better ports
Larger back catalogue of games
Xbox live is by far the best online gaming component for a console
Is much cheaper
Good PC connectivity
Negatives:
Is prone to hardware failure (though covered by extended warranty)
Does not come with next generation disc player standard (yet)

PS3 positives:
Blue Ray standard
Region free
May have longer shelf life
Various extra slots for things (More usb, sd card etc.)
Negatives:
Difficult to develop games for
Price

To be honest the live component for Xbox thrashes that of Sony.
Alot of the PS3's hype has been marketing driven, or that of poor understanding of the technology and abit of rabid fanboyism.
Many ports perform worse on the Sony than the Xbox, due to difficulty working with the linux format and the Xbox's genrally better graphical performance.
The cell processor is a bit of hype.
What it helps with are ancillary functions, as opposed to the xbox three all purpose CPU's, which allow for more raw processing power.
In the end though the Sony has some great unique (though they may not stay that way for long) gaming franchises.
The PS3 may end up with greater lastability though, just due to the fact it has a blue ray player and the posibility that somewhere down the line a game developer may really exploit the PS3's cell SPU's.
If you have the money get both lolz.

The difference between PSN and XBL is overrated these days, coming from someone with both consoles. I think the PS store is very good, as is the web browser. PSN is also free, and comes with PS Home, wich is great IMO. The Built in wireless was a big bonus for me, and it cost me $100 for my 360

To sum up my thoughts on the console debate;
Buy a 360 if you want to game today,
Buy a PS3 if you want to game tomorrow
Buy a Wii if you're a douchebag

The 360 at this present time is a better pure gaming device. The Online is slightly better and the games catalogue is still a fair way ahead. The PS3 on the other hand, is far more convenient, and is far superior as a multimedia device, because of its good MM interface, built in wireless and memory card slots, Blu-ray, region free, more reliable and huge catalogue of backwards compatability.
The game quality difference is quickly diminishing, if you took both my ps3 and 360 off me, i would want the PS3 back more.

I find lag for me is a much bigger issue on PSN, plus the XBLA titles on arcade are far better than the Sony equivalent.
Anywhoos you also get freetime for Xbox live with iinet so it dosn't come off your quota.
Primarily I PC game but I have owned just about every console ever lolz (maybe not some of the more esoteric ones) and I agree with BS Xbox for now and perhaps PS3 for later, though that's all up in the air.
Still if you don't mind buying a PS3 from Japan (which is what I would recommend as its far cheaper even with postage), there is the point that backwards compatability for PS2 (greatest console ever), is hardware and not software based.

I am still undecided. I love Halo and Fable, so that's what sways me to a 360, but I think I want a ps3.

Unless of course I just upgrade my pc and play left for dead. Anyone played that? Awesome 1st person shooter, frantic pace. Herds of zombies just swamping you. :thumbsu:

I love my PS3, wouldn't have it any other way.

Was thinking about getting a 360 just for the hell of it, but there are not very many games I want that are on it.

Upon saying that, I am still waiting for the whole reason I wanted the PS3, GT5.

GT5 prologue took SFA time to finish.
 
The PS3 is awesome. Get Guitar Hero World Tour and FIFA 09 !
 
I need to make a decision soon, but I am leaning towards ps3 :D

GT5 is out yeah? or still only the prologue?

Might need a bigger tv too !
