Anyone been watching "The man in the high castle"?

First I heard of it was today, saw the trailer and I've whacked it on the DL. Looks the goods.
I did see an article giving it a great wrap on The Guardian the other day and totally forgot. Damn it why did I start watching The Wire again. Oh well.

guys, quick question, what's the cringiest comment you've ever seen someone post on the Port Facebook page?

The funny thing is, cringe comments don't stand out on FB. They sort of blend in

All Aussie adventures, its time to hit the road!

Read an article with Troy Dann not long ago, was having a sook about that particular character/show sinking his battleship. "They say it was based on Alby Mangels, but..."

Never mind Tom Gleisner created and starred as the character on episodes of The Late Show circa 1992-3.

One of my brothers who lived in Cairns for a while used to say the baileys/butterscotch schnapps shots at his local were called Troy Danns

Read a bit about it but no. Can't get past the fact that the Yanks especially do these obsessively detailed fan-created worlds where the Axis powers won, or the Confederacy won, or whatever. Less a clever idea than just filming one of these.
Take out the Nazis and is it worth watching? Alan Coren was a British comic writer who was very successful in the 60s and 70s. He famously stated that he was told by his publishers that only three kinds of books sold: those about golf, pets and Nazis. So his next book was called 'Golfing for cats' and note the flag on the cover:

Counterfactual history enjoys the popularity it does because of the sliding doors aspect - and what greater topic than the result of the largest war in human history?

I'm not sure a series predicated on the technically superior Betamax VCR trumping rival VHS would stimulate the imagination quite as much.

Vale Dick Smith share price. 60m stock write off from a company that makes a 18m NPAT each year, now abandoning their profit forecasts for Christmas too.

Dropped 70% on open.

Also, Portia check out RYG today. Hnngghhh my baby!

Turned their back on their core market to compete in a much more competitive market than the one in which they'd established themselves. Predictably failed miserably.
I don't say this as some smart arse market analyst, I say this as a 35 year customer, or at least I would be if I didn't start shopping at Jaycar 10 years ago.

I worked there in management for 5 years until 2013. The problems run very very deep. The buying team are atrocious, and there is no surprise they have had to write off so much of their depreciating stock they failed to sell.

They have now branched into appliances to copy JB, long long way behind the 8 ball.

They hold 300m in inventory which is the same as JB, but they turn over 1/3 of the stock, which means the stock they have is often out of date as it takes them so long to move such a large inventory.

Their profit margins are solid, in fact they are better than JB in this regard by about 4%, but they don't move anything close to the volume.

You can thank Woolworths for changing the direction of the business to purely consumer electronics as it was after their purchase of DS that this happened. They then sold the flagging business to a private equity firm in anchorage, who promptly made 200m on it by listing it on the share market. It was listed at $2.0 initially, its now 31 cents.

Mismanagement and an overall lack of buying talent and strategic thinking has destroyed a very solid brand. When I left, anchorage and their handpuppet DS CEO Nick abboud were inflicting serious cultural change which effectively forced out their best talent to other retailers. Their internal policies and treatment of staff is horrendous now.

They have cut store level wages to a shoestring and the staff that are battling to serve everyone cop abuse of all kinds as theh struggle to meet demand. Anchorage have since now shifted online orders to be processed and shipped at store level - adding this massive task to stores without adding extra wages to do so. That business is malfunctioning in a big way, and it's very sad.
