...... nothing bad on Noddy in Toyland when most kids were reading it. The "hidden meanings" only come out when it became trendy.
I was a big fan of Enid Blyton when I was a kid. I read all of the Famous Five books without even realising that they were instilling deeply racists, xenophobic and sexist ideals in me. o_O

Ditto, loved her books, famous five, secret seven and noddy; simply read for the enjoyment and saw nothing sinister.

*sigh*

Of course you saw nothing sinister- you were a child, and it was part of the culture back then.

When I was a child I watched sesame street. Lots of kids did, and still do. Anyway, as a bit of a moneymaking skit they released a 'best of' dvd a few years ago with classic footage from the late 60's and 70's. And it was rated 'pg' which raised a bit of a stink in the media.

But when I saw it, I immediately got the point... because one of the first scenes is a classic sesame street montage of children at play... in a building site. If I was a parent I'd have a pink fit if my kids saw that, because as a culture we've changed, we're a lot less tolerant of risks when it comes to health & safety.

Enid Blighton wasn't a horrid person, she just lived in a time when racism and homophobia were just part of the culture. Cultures are living things and change constantly. We just have to change with them. Just like Port Adelaide does.

Neither did my parents see anything sinister. My current views on racism and homophobia weren't influenced one iota by any Enid Blython book read as a child.

..... There was some public 'outrage" at Alf Garnett when it was on TV .....
I don't remember that outrage, except as far as I know it was the first time on Australian TV that "Bloody" was allowed to be used. The show was huge in its time and people 'got' the idea that Alf was a social incompetent.
More disturbing were shows like the mercifully short Curry and chips where the British didn't manage to get the balance right between racism and social commentary. There were others of that ilk.

Ahhh, Australia Day. The one day of the year where my girlfriend lets me wear footy shorts and a wifebeater outside

Bliss.
What s a 'wife beater' here? It is stella artois in the UK

I wish the umpire had given the second one not out so I could have seen a Watson hatrick.

Club cricket in Tassie is his level and where he should be.
