Countdown 40th anniversary special last night said 3 million people watched the program each Sunday in 1974 and the first few years. The population was about 14-15 million people. Now that was true nationwide viewership with all the rural ratings as well.
The grand final this year didnt average 3 mil in the 5 capital citiies ratings ie about 13.5 mil people.
When Gough died Paul Keating said there was an Australia before Gough and a different one after. Watching that Countdown special I reckon there was an Australia before colour TV and a different one after it. Coundown took full advantage of colour, the new open vibe of the Gough era and by taping the show on Saturday and flying tapes around the country overnight - for Sunday 6pm viewing it was the first true national music show and the smart bands/performers took advantage of this and the power it wiielded.. I dont think the ABC will ever have another program as powerful or influential and in particular appeal to such a big chunk of the 13-30 age group.
