They killed the guitar solo for an extended period of time. I will forever hate them for that.
I don't know, man, there are outstanding solos but a lot of wank and mediocrity. They aren't all that.

I don't disagree...

But Cobain and his beige cardigans and fraudulent guitar playing were Beyonce type popular in a decade featuring albums such as Cowboys From Hell, Rust In Peace, Painkiller, Vulgar Display of Power, Season in the Abyss etc.

Not cool man.

Let's face it, RIP, Painkiller and Seasons in the Abyss may aswell have been 80s albums. All 1990 on the dot. All of those 80s kings sort of tapered off in the 90s in regards to outstanding output after those albums.

Pantera were flying the flag for mainstream metal as far as I can make out. It's no wonder Nirvana took some much of the attention in the rock scene after thrash sort of died out and glam... well I never liked glam.

Who cares anyway, underground metal and the development of extreme metal in the 90s was awesome. Gothenburg melodeath, death metal, black metal, etc.

There were 2 types of glam in my opinion... The horrible LA scene that really was blokes trying to be chicks like Poison.

The New Jersey scene was far more aggressive guitar orientated.... Guitar players like Zakk & Doug Aldrich etc. Sort of a heavier glam if you will. This stuff ruled.

Late 90's resurgent extreme metal was awesome....

Being a guitar whiz is fine but it doesn't make you good at songwriting, and Kobain was a genius, even if most of his stuff is baby's first guitar level.

Nothing wrong with simplicity. Nirvana were fantastic.

The real problem (in Australia anyway) came in the post grunge beige-out where we didn't get another remotely interesting Australian rock band come along until what, British India? Violent Soho? I mean the likes of Nick Cave and Tex Perkins were still doing their thing all the way through, but for the rest of Australian mainstream rock it was like one big competition to be the most boring.

It makes Cobain a great songwriter, but it doesn't make him a great guitarist. There is a difference. Rolling Stone is the American equivalent of NME, both outrageously pretentious.

I don't think anybody would argue that Kobain was a great guitarist, even his biggest fans. He was just good enough to play the music that he wrote and that was good enough for him to be front man of the most popular band in the world at the time.

If you want the 'best technical guitarist' just look at any generic tech death metal band out in the 2000s. A lot of technically ****ing hard guitar but shit songwriting. Go figure.

A great guitarist must be a great songwriter as much as a good player. That's what makes music good.

I agree.

Provided we aren't saying that someone has to be a great guitarist to make great music where a guitar features.

Bowie could play the guitar and he wrote lots of guitar songs but he wasn't a great guitarist.

Songwriting ability over technical prowess every day of the week

*Insert Malmsteen Picture here... what a douchie musician

My opinion is that Nirvana came along at the right time and fitted a purpose, but compared to, say the last 50 years of music do they deserve the iconic status that is heaped upon them? I feel that Pearl Jam's Alive and Jeremy are the equal or better than anything Nirvana did, coming from the same era. Cobain's songwriting was mediocre at best, and him re-arranging his face with a shotgun did more to enhance his bands status than their music

Okay let's see where you're going with this...

I feel that Pearl Jam's Alive and Jeremy are the equal or better than anything Nirvana did, coming from the same era.

lolle

Cobain's songwriting was mediocre at best,

loooollllleee

and him re-arranging his face with a shotgun did more to enhance his bands status than their music

You could maybe argue this if they weren't the biggest band in the world while he was very much alive.

I kinda dig Cobain's guitar playing there's alot to be said for half-assed racket making unschooled guitarists they sometimes do the simple better than anyone... good feedbacker too

Syd Barrett a fav of mine and pretty half-assed as a musician really but damn he played some odd progressions with such original flare.. good feedbacker too :D
