Romance served an important plot in Ghostbusters. In 95% of movies it is unnecessary however. Every Adam Sandler movie would be better without a romantic subplot, and who goes to one of his movies wanting romance anyway?

Market forces is not a bullshit reason and I think you know that. Hollywood is big business, it succumbs to such. independent movies have more scope obviously, but to dismiss market forces when talking about Hollywood is disingenuous. I do appreciate that I am also contradicting my complaint about them simply feminising the characters in Ghostbusters here, so I'll retract that earlier point.
Fey may be formulaic, but she can never be accused of not creating roles for females.

Back on Ghostbusters, the original movies are almost unwatchable aside from some choice comedic bursts, mostly Murray in the first one.

This one, I wish it all the best but the trailer reminds me of Pixels for some reason but that just might be Sony influence.
