It's one thing to talk about what the structure of the comp would have been, which teams then would or wouldn't have come in, etc, but I think his comment was mostly about how it was incredibly sad to see Fitzroy go despite it not being the only option.

Did Schrodinger's dog eat Pavlov's cat?

As someone completely emotionally detatched from Fitzroy I still think it's sad that people had their club taken away from them...

Marvellous post spec mod.

I personally couldn't cope. That is when football became a business in official terms.

Yeah, blimey, I barely get to Adelaide and was raised in Melbourne but I'd definitely stop following football.

If there was no ports, I'd have to put on the boots to fill a void in my life.

To heck with that.

I love you spec mod.

It might be the beer or bourbon or the delightful pinot noir or just my general love of good people but you are an ok guy.

Good on him for for coming on but yer right

"I think probably the disappearance of Fitzroy. It didn't have to happen. And within a few years, Graeme Samuel, the driving force behind the push for mergers and relocations, basically admitted the strategy was wrong. Not only that, but the TV rights money went through the roof. Had the club been allowed to ride out the storm for not too much longer, they would still be here (as an AFL club) today. I reckon that's pretty sad."

What a boring VFL days of yore reponse

They had no home base and minuscule membership. They made North look like Collingwood.

If you were that way inclined you'd almost believe Brisbane's current predicament is karma.

Their administration at the time was incredibly arrogant and unfeeling regarding what was basically a hostile takeover engineered by the league.

The sensible thing would've been to greenlight the Fitzroy-North merger proposal.

At least that way Lions members could still be apart of a Melbourne-based club and their combined forces would've stopped North from embarassing themselves with decades worth of 14K crowds at Etihad.

From what I've read one of the main obstacles was that the AFL were concerned with creating a "superteam", as North were already well on the up at the time, so instead they shipped off 3 cups to Brisbane.

Good one dickheads.

Go one dickheads.

The great Greg Miller helped stuff that one up. It was the obvious long-term move but after Miller's dallying the other Victorian clubs couldn't see the wood for the trees.

Hell, around the same time St Kilda was lobbying to have our entry concessions watered down even though the consensus was we'd struggle to win a game in our first two years.

At least we didn't get a Norf superteam though, phew

So I just found out Nick Chigwidden bought my childhood house near the esplanade, knocked it down and built some sort of modern monstrosity on it for 3.5 million.

Glenelg FC must be going ok. :D

The mates rates offered by Scott Salisbury-Holmes must be fairly decent

I know the Adelaide is Melbourne 20 years ago joke is well worn but that does reek of the Snaffle shenanigans of recent times doesn't it?
