HAS the Red (and Blue) Russian finally arrived?

In his ninth year in the system, and six years after Neale Daniher controversially decided to keep him and trade Darren Jolly to Sydney, Mark Jamar has begun the season as if he is trying to prove his former coach right. Finally.

So far this season Jamar has been in the form Demons fans and staff have expected from him for five years.

But, in truth, he's lucky to be still there and his one-year contract is a weekly reminder it's all over at year's end if his form doesn't continue.

Good read. Who could have possibly predicted this at the beggining of this year?

If Jamar can stay fit and firing and Sandilands is injured for any period then the big Russian may well be an unlikly AA!

Let me think. Me, and half the rest of the board! His performances of late 2008 and especially last year showed that if he kept playing that well all he needed to do was take to the field and he would be in the top half dozen of big old school ruckmen. It's no surprise he's beaten Renouf, a settling Jolly and a recovering Ivan Maric. He should get another scalp against Richmond. From then on he (and whoever backs him up) will face a tougher task in North and Brisbane.

His work around the ground has been impressive as well. He'll never be a magic kick of the footy but has kicked reasonably well and has handballed it off well. But the best bit is how we've used him around the ground for the kickouts. We've done to long kick to him on a heap of occasions and he's either held the mark or brought the ball to ground.

All the more reason to get a contract signed to avoid any Gold Coast tail chasing.

Also shows how quickly things could turn sour for us if he was to go down injured.

The thing i rate most with russian (apart from his awesome tap work) is when the ball hits the ground he contests very well and lays some big tackles. If you watch him closely this week, watch him when the ball hits the ground after the ruck contest he goes in after the footy or the man straight away!

Exactly. However I thought pj wasn't horrible when played last year. His skills have improved and he can compete

I agree that he has arrived, but also agree that the form he showed in '09 when not injured was around about the standard he is currently producing.

But even if he never does anything else on the feild again, I will still find happiness remembering the Collingwood game when he gathered, wheeled around onto the right and kicked out on the full.

Brett Thornton wasn't dropped because of poor form this week - it was because he saw a picture of Russian and went into a coma. Carlton have done well to keep it quiet so far.
