The rookies

Anyone else worried about the lack of opportunities given to the rookies during the Wizard Cup?

Every other club gave at least one rookie a chance, yet we continue to play a relatively full strength team.

For me, there are only two reasons you'd hold the rookies back a) you are desperate to win or b) the kids aren't up to it.

I could be completely wrong, but the pessimist in me tells me that the second scenario might be accurate.

I know its really early, but surely it would be in everyones interest to let us see the kid we used a top 10 pick on.

Thoughts?

The bulldogs didnt play any rookies.

Well I agree with you that it's no good. We may not get the chance to see these young players again for some time. At least last season we saw the likes of Bartel, Ablett, in early matches.

If we keep winning I suppose that's consulation for me.

Well, guys like Skipper and Power are as good as rookies.

We only played one guy who is relatively new to senior football, Matthew McCarthy.

I sincerely hope that Bomber gives Mackie a run this week, or even a guy like Jeff Smith or Henry Playfair.

And by the way i just wanted to say how good your young guys were against us(the bulldogs).I think you gave our young players a footy lesson. Anyway good luck with winning the wiz cup.

I am not too worried for the reason that we blooded so many players last season, (nine) that we need to give them every opportunity to force their way into the senior side.

Players like David Johnson, Charlie Gardiner, Will Slade, Josh Hunt, Jarrad Rooke and Matthew McCarthy have been given a chance so far... I would like to see James Bartel given a chance as well before the season starts... perhaps this week against the Carring Bush.

Why play rookies just because other clubs are ?
We played a heap of rookies last year in the Wizz Fiizz cup & home and away season.
I don't see why we should play Jeff Smith [rookie list] ahead of listed players.If Street,King or 'Unco' were injured,then maybe.

Bartel won't play seniors this week.He only played a half in the VFL last week.Who would make way for him ? Ricco will most likely play,which means 3 players from last week will be left out [Slade,Grgic & Hunt]

Who said that Jubs?

My reasons for wanting to see the kids are a) give them experience in the big time, and b) to allow the supporters to see the kids we have invested our future in.

The reference to other clubs selections was merely raised for comparative purposes.

If fit, i'd expect Mitchell White to play as well.

The obvious first exclusion would be Brent Grgic, but i'd like to see him on the field for more then 5 minutes before he gets given the arse, yet again.

I commented that all other clubs had given kids a chance, was by no means a reason why we should.

I'm not worried by the lack of opportunities for the rookies. I'm glad we are taking the Wizard Cup seriously and I think the club have seen it as a chance to get us into some good form early instead of starting the season slowly, as we have a history of doing. They also have capitalised on the chance to get some much needed extra money by having a good WC run and capitalising on the other clubs not taking the competition seriously.
