With two games to go, the battle for the top six is reaching its height with seven teams still able to play finals cricket in the test competition.
Let’s have a look at the seven teams in contention for the finals as well as the remaining sides to see who will finish where after 18 rounds.
The Contenders
1st - Bengal Tigers, Won 11, Lost 5, 227 points
Round 17 vs Queensland (home)
Round 18 vs West Coast Warriors (away)
Bengal have been top for most of the year but their form of late has been a little up and down. They have a reasonable run home facing an out-of-form Queensland at home before heading west to take on the up-and-down Warriors in the final game of the year. The Warriors’ game could prove to be a danger one with the Warriors capable of putting together a cracking game or they could head the opposite way and play a shocker. The last round could very well determine who finishes on top of the ladder and Bengal will want to finish first.
Predicted Finish: 1st
2nd – Allies, Won 10, Lost 5, Drawn 1, 224 points
Round 17 vs Crocodiles (home)
Round 18 vs Baghdad Bombers (home)
The Allies won’t have to travel for the rest of the home and away season with their final two games at home. The pink machine are charging home and go into the last two rounds with some blistering form with the round 17 clash against the Crocs set to be an absolute cracker. The Crocs and the Allies are only separated by a point so both teams are very much in the mix for top spot on the ladder. The loser of that game will likely finish third so it makes the round 17 game all the more important. In the final round, the Allies face the Bombers who are well out of finals contention and should be able to pick up a win.
Predicted Finish: 2nd
3rd – Crocodiles, Won 10, Lost 6, 223 points
Round 17 vs Allies (away)
Round 18 vs Central Chargers (home)
The Crocs’ season will come down to one game, the round 17 clash against the Allies. To have a chance of finishing first, the Crocs simply must win that game against the Allies otherwise they will probably finish third and miss a top two spot. However, achieving that is a lot harder than it sounds. The Allies are in really good form and with home ground advantage and a venomous bowling attack they will be very tough to beat. But, they aren’t invincible and the Crocs will fancy their chances against the pink machine. In the final round, the Crocs face the Chargers back at Croc Park in what could be an important game, the Crocs will either be playing for first or third whilst Central Chargers will be looking to consolidate sixth spot and sneak into the finals series.
Predicted Finish: 3rd
4th – Queensland, Won 9, Lost 7, 206 points
Round 17 vs Bengal Tigers (away)
Round 18 vs Kings Cross Mariners (away)
Queensland face their biggest test in round 17, a tough game against top of the ladder Bengal Tigers. The Canetoads are in no-man’s land a bit at the moment, they sit a game behind the Crocs in third and are almost one game in front of 5th placed Victoria. However, the Vics have a pretty easy run home so Queensland may need two wins to hold down fourth spot. They should beat Kings Cross in the final round but the amount of points they get against the Tigers may end up determining whether they finish 4th or 5th. They also have two away games to finish so things will be made even tougher without being able to rely on home-ground advantage and they will need to be careful they don’t slip right down the ladder.
Predicted Finish: 5th
5th – Victoria, Won 8, Lost 7, Drawn 1, 194 points
Round 17 vs West Coast Warriors (home)
Round 18 vs Inferno Devils (away)
The Vics have the best run home out of the sides in the race for the finals. They face West Coast Warriors at home in round 17 followed by an away game against the Devils in the final round. The game against the Warriors will prove to be a tricky one though with both teams pretty evenly matched. West Coast won the previous fixture at the WACA so the Vics will need to be careful although they will have home-ground advantage here. The Warriors though will be keen to win with their finals hopes on the line and a win could see them enter the six at Victoria’s expense. Round 18 sees Victoria travel to meet the Inferno Devils in an away fixture. Victoria should be able to get up and they will need to win at least one of these two games to make the finals.
Predicted finish: 4th
6th – Central Chargers, Won 8, Lost 7, Drawn 1, 186 points
Round 17 vs Kings Cross Mariners (home)
Round 18 vs Crocodiles (away)
The Chargers enter the last two rounds in good form and won a place in the top six last round. They have a fairly cruisy game in round 17, facing Kings Cross at home before a tough away game against the Crocs in the final fixture. The Chargers must win at least one game to make the finals although they may have to win two if the Warriors can win their final two games as the Chargers are only three points in front of the Warriors outfit. A finals spot may come down to how many points they can pick up against the Crocs in round 18.
Predicted finish: 6th
7th – West Coast Warriors, Won 8, Lost 8, 183 points
Round 17 vs Victoria (away)
Round 18 vs Bengal Tigers (home)
The Warriors face stiff competition for a finals spot with a tough run home. They meet Victoria in round 17, a game which they really need to win given Central Chargers round 17 opponent. Round 18 could be anything, in fact both games could be anything as the Warriors are capable of turning it on or not showing up at all. They’ll be hoping they can turn it on in the last two games and win both to grab a finals spot. If they can win their last two and hope a couple of results go their way, they are still a chance to take 4th but that appears unlikely.
Predicted Finish - 7th
The Rest
8th – Baghdad Bombers, Won 5, Lost 9, Drawn 2, 152 points
Round 17 vs Inferno Devils (home)
Round 18 vs Allies (away)
Baghdad have had a pretty disappointing year so far but they can still finish the season on a high. Round 17 sees them take on the Devils at home and a win here could see them consign the Devils to the wooden spoon. However, they face the red hot Allies outfit in round 18. The Bombers are truly stuck in the middle in terms of their ladder position, they are 31 points behind the Warriors who are 7th and 24 points in front of the 9th placed Kings Cross Mariners outfit so a rise up the ladder would seem unlikely. They should be able to beat the Devils at home but the Allies will be a huge test for them.
Predicted Finish – 8th
9th – Kings Cross Mariners, Won 4, Lost 11, Drawn 1, 128 points
Round 17 vs Central Chargers (away)
Round 18 vs Queensland (home)
The Mariners have had a shocking year but a win last week saw them get off the bottom of the ladder for the first time in a while. Whilst the Mariners can’t play finals they can certainly play spoiler here in the final two games. Round 17 sees them play the Chargers who need to win to make sure they hold onto sixth place. A win to the Mariners could see the Chargers drop out of the top six and maybe out of finals contention. Round 18 is a home game against Queensland who’s form has been rather ordinary of late. Queensland will be looking for a win to consolidate a 4th or 5th place finish so Kings Cross could be a potential danger side for them. The Mariners will simply be looking to finish the test year off with something to cheer about.
Predicted Finish – 9th
10th – Inferno Devils, Won 4, Lost 12, 123 points
Round 17 vs Baghdad Bombers (away)
Round 18 vs Victoria (home)
The Devils have had a terrible year and now sit last on the ladder after avoiding that feat for most of the season. Their best chance to get off the bottom is in round 17 when they face fellow struggler Baghdad Bombers at Abdu Prison. The Devils won’t enter the game with much form but they will still have a chance at winning with the Bombers also having a fairly lean year. Round 18 sees the Devils host Victoria at Hell’s Kitchen. The Vics will be looking to finish with a win and perhaps take them up the ladder but the Devils can play spoiler and try and avoid the dreaded wooden spoon.
There we have it, two rounds to go and still plenty of cricket left. The last two rounds should be crackers with plenty of crunch games and potential crunch games in there. We might even have a surprise or two left in the season.
