What's with the Quiney selection hate? Two very strong seasons opening the batting and having just out scored his next competitor (Hughes) in the tour match. Surely that's a perfectly consistent selection? And then he made a pair because of a flaw in his game (loves to try to hit everything when he walks in = knicker)

oh yeah and chalk up Usman being called into the squad over Doolan when Clarke got injured as another blunder. It's hard to see how a player who failed once at test cricket mainly due to flaws in his game can come back in without changing them.

It's not inconsistent.

One blokes 30 whilst the other bloke is much younger with the best stats of any young batsman in the country. Whilst Hughes also has several international failures he also has a few successes.

Quiney was an injury fill in, remember. Quiney made a pair, Watson then returned to fitness.

And then Ponting quit. So a spot was back open. I guess you could say Quiney should have remained in front of Hughes, but as noted, test level exposed a flaw in his game, he hadn't improved it (duh. he barely had a chance). Hughes, having fixed a flaw in his game, meanwhile was scoring butt loads of runs. That all made sense to me. And then Invers made that bizarre statement that made no sense for a load of reasons, not least that Quiney was the obvious replacement come SA series, and Hughes come SL. sometimes it's just obvious what to do. It might not be consistent, but it's obvious.

Watto was injured for the first two tests.
Quiney came in after a good year.

He failed 3 times and Hughes scored a century after a decent county cricket season.
Watson returned from injury and Quiney moved out.

Ponting retired. Hughes was moved in.

Quiney's being around for a long time and has only really had the one good season. He deserved a shot but I don't think he can be aggrieved with his handling.

right now, it makes about 10000X more sense to drop Hughes than Cowan. But is it 'consistent'? I don't know. The hastings selection + 4 seamers at the SCG remain the only selections that really trouble me.

Anyway, Helfenhaus and Pattinson were both injured and couldn't play. If Siddle was fatigued to the extent that he simply couldn't play then that sucks but it's the way things go. Leaving Siddle out in those circumstances is not the same as resting Starc for the Boxing Day test (which was diabolical).

I went to a curators session with Les Burdett the other day. He was talking about looking after pitches like you would your kids - hard but fair. Treat a pitch with kid gloves and it will be a soft as butter and shit itself under pressure. What have the selectors done to our team?

I believe the selectors are under instruction from CA to not select players ruled out by the sports science and medical staff.

And this was in the 90's, it's probably become more conservative since then. No wonder our blokes don't play more than 2-3 Tests in a row these days.

No not really. Thanks to some insane circumstances, it was a fairly plausible thing to do. First off, a 2 and a half day break between an Adelaide and Perth test match was always gonna impact recovery and never should happen again. And then Pattinson got injured during the match, so Hilf and Siddle had to take on a much much bigger workload, and then the game went til the end of Day 5, with Hilf and Siddle lodging plenty of overs that day. There was no way those two were anywhere near their usual level of fitness, and those two aren't good enough to play when they aren't near their usual level of fitness. It wasn't that much of a deal for me.

The main problem was that Hastings got picked, which really didn't make sense. Either you follow the Lyon, Cummins, Starc & Pattinson road and pick Hazlewood, or you trust the stats and pick Bird. (both Bird and Hazlewood were rested from the Aus A game to keep them up their sleeves remember, which in hindsight, seems to have been an early sign they knew the short break between the Adl to Perth matches could be troublesome). Instead they went down the middle and picked Hastings. It was insane. And then he opened the bowling...

(4 seamers at the SCG was troublesome to me due to the history of having 4 incumbent seamers, and chickening out of dropping one of them. see: 09 Ashes, 10-11 Ashes. And they did it then, and again during the ODers after Perth this summer)
