Re: The SEN Thread 9

I was listening to Francis on the ABC at 10 this morning. Since he moved over, it is frightening to me how much he has transformed in his expression. If you didn't know any better, you wouldn't think he's the same clown who was with Ox. Doesn't talk s*** or over others, he's been far more objective in expressing his opinons.

Crazy I know but I quite like Wallsy on the radio.

Who's with me?
Wallsy on the radio, or SEN? Not that I bothered to post it on here, but I had a feeling he was going to step up when it was known to me he signed with SEN. IIRC, he's going to take Turf's old spot with KB on tuesday. I'd expect him to work well with KB.

Does he take talkback?
Probably has about 10 listeners so he doesn't want to piss any of them off.

I've never really bothered with 3AW for sport. I know a lot of people probably cling on from the Sports Tonight days when Hookes was on but SEN has existed the whole time I've lived in Melbourne. SEN/ABC Grandstand/Triple M at games (when I've only got the ipod with FM band) is all I ever listen to for footy. That's the long way of saying I never heard Walls on radio before SEN.

On channel 10 I disliked him but he has been good on the morning glory. I could say the company he now keeps makes him appear better but he used to work with Luke Darcy and Tim Lane!!! I also don't mind Hamish McLaughlin calling on MMM, while on gameday he is unbearable, so perhaps radio tones down the flogishness (new word).

Re: The SEN Thread 9

I agree. Out of the main presenters I would say KB has the broadest knowledge followed by Finey.

Least is those muppets bettween 6-9am and then followed by those other muppets between 4-7pm.

Really disappointed with the Run home and sick of the AFL bullshit all the time in the Morning Glory. Get people from England or the US to talk about Sport more.

Barry Quick and hes cronies need to be reminded that it is SEN SPORT ENTERTAINMENT NETWORK. Not AFLEN

Re: The SEN Thread 9

I just wish Teo would move back from the Microphone. He bloody yell down the microphone and at 1:30am odd in the morning. I am trying to get to sleep.

I think SEN getting the AFL coverage was a double edge sword for them. It gave them a ratings boost(I think) but It alienate a lot of listeners with it all AFL ALL the time.

I wanted to know how Marcus Ambrose went today in the Nascar(yes Bedford I know you hate Motorsports) or I want to know how the up and Coming Stars are going in any sport.

There are 4 Football Codes in Melbourne. Is there a RL or RU corrospondent for SEN. No they need to get Blow ins from the respective club or some ********(sadly Rebecca Wilson) from Sydney to talk about it. RL has been in this town for nearly 15 years. Give It a go, SEN!! Soccer is all Victory with is pathetic for a Heart fan like myself.

I love my Footy(all codes) but It is SEN and to talk about thing that were in the Sun or the Age, over and over and over agian is really get to you.

Seriously, The knowledge of the other sports apart from there speciallity is nothing but deporable. I have more knowledge than most of these.

Big thumbs up to very funny 12pm-1pm Friday with KB crossing over into Harf's show.

When SEN started is was to be promised to cover all sport equally, I do not see that now

Re: The SEN Thread 9

Not Hungry for Academies on a Manic Monday

Now I watched with interest last night, Eddie McGuire Tonight and the questions and debate regarding Aboriginal players and issues. It was suggested Indigenous academies should be set up around Australia to prepare Aboriginal players for the journey of playing AFL football. The age of twenty was regarded to be the right age before exposing them to the AFL. Why should Aboriginal players be segregated; why should they be deprived of the opportunity to play the game; why should they be held back when a boy from Lennox Street, Richmond is allowed to play? Football prides itself on the fact that you can be fat, thin, slow, fast, tall or short, and any race, colour, or creed. We should not dare hold back indigenous players.
I’m KB, That’s My Take.

Always a huge weekend in sport with listeners’ ticks and crosses, and, the quirky Dr. Turf now moved into the Monday 11am timeslot. Hmmm, what’s he up to with all these changes? His old time slot has been filled by the effervescent Robert Walls.:) Rita “Softpaws” Panacea adds some femme flavour after 10 am on Mondays talking about the game allegedly played in Heaven, which led to the controversial picket line at the Pearly Gates. Be assured the West Baptist Church followers have nothing compared to the ruckus caused by Whitten, Dyer, and Bobby Davis. If you listen carefully in the pew on Sundays you can actually hear Teddy telling God “ya can get stuffed if you think we’re gonna play rugby union.”

Smith gets things rolling by linking the current indigenous controversy to the Paul Roos' comments about taking Aboriginal players out of the game. As for an Indigenous Commissioner and academies around Australia holding young players back until they turn twenty, Putz calls it “ridiculous.” Lots of questions on EMT last night but not a lot of answers, says KB … He and Smith rant on the ideas suggested on the McGuire show and Putz is back to using the word “we” when talking about the AFL. Incontrovertible points made by both SEN talking heads. Oh dear, Martin Flanagan was on EMT with some suggestions or something.

Putz: The whole argument is based on a suggestion that the system is not working. That we’re not getting indigenous players into football, and when we do we don’t look after them. Or we don’t know how to look after them. I would argue that we do pretty well at it, Kevin. We’ve got ten percent of the AFL are indigenous players and that’s fantastic, and we’ve got superstars everywhere we look. The argument that modern football doesn’t suit indigenous players is so absurd when in anybody’s top ten they would put Buddy Franklin and than Adam Goodes. Now there’s two players who dominate AFL football and they’re indigenous. It is a ridiculous position to have taken with Paul Roos to start with. The argument was run because people see it as a way to whack the AFL. And it is an argument simply without foundation.

This should be some tooth-pulling talkback and the first caller thinks Rendell’s comments were taken out of context … KB reminds a caller of the go-home factor applying to all players and he names Anthony Rocca, Shannon Grant (he forgot about Darren Gaspar), and Chris Judd … Timothy Michael Watson gets an early mention for Goose of the Week for suggesting he’s run out of expletives to describe Billy Slater’s play. Putz quickly slates Watson for Gibberish of the Week … back to the Aboriginal discussion topic that has gone on through the ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s, and beyond this decade only to go on and on and on … Smith scoffs at the idea of academies as the AFL states their has been no Aboriginal players being discriminated against because of endurance. KB queries why the Clontarf Academy wasn’t mentioned on EMT.

Putz: The discussion point was raised by a parliamentarian was that he would like academies and he would like the players held until they’re twenty and then suddenly released into the community. I think it’s abhorrent.

KB muses some indifference to the idea of academies getting “a bit of a seal of approval” on the EMT programme … next caller believes the TV talkfest ideas being about assimilation. … KB refers to equal opportunity and asks whether an academy is going to be started for kids from lower backgrounds and holding them back until they’re twenty. Putz wants to know if “we’d have 87 academies in Melbourne catering for different; for Sudanese and God knows what else, Kevin. It’s such nonsense.”

Putz: Well, is assimilation having segregated colleges and not having players play till they’re twenty? On what grounds is that assimilation?

KB: Not everyone who makes it in AFL football is born with a sliver spoon in their mouth.
Putz: This is a discussion, Kevin that should be based on a fact that the AFL is falling down in its ability to get indigenous talent and grow them within the sport. It’s not falling down on that at all. It’s succeeding in that and yet we have this debate that is quite nebulous in terms of what’s it based on?

KB: I think the indigenous population is roundabout two percent, I think, of Australia, and yet ten percent of the AFL is made up of indigenous players.
Putz: That’s right. There’s so many success stories, Kevin, and to say that “we’ll this boy fell out of the system,” well, how many other people fall out of the system who are not indigenous? Every year, Kevin!

Scotty from Oakleigh said: What you’ve got to understand in the broader context of the wider society is Aboriginals have higher incidents of alcohol abuse, of convictions, have a younger average life expectancy. There’s a whole range of well known studied and proven issues with Aboriginal society in general and in all other areas additional assistance is given for education, and support for those people. And I think the point is that maybe the AFL need to invest more resources specifically for Aboriginals because why would it be different in the AFL. Why does the circumstances change?

Only Scottys, politicians like Snowdon, and lefty journalists like Flanagan (never managed a business) would suggest socially constructive human engineering concepts of sorts to help those that so desperately need government and bureaucratic assistance. Academies and indigenous commissioners are apparently the answers that have past everybody by in assisting prospective Aborigine footballers to assimilate into the AFL world. So now the AFL is morally and socially responsible for the life-coping skills of a race of people. We just can’t get enough bureaucratic bungling and interference in our lives. Now these idealists have found a window to a utopia that cuts through the culture barrier of Australian black and white.

Maybe (lots of maybes) the way government in other parts of the world have carefully used taxpayer’s money to so help indigenous groups can be applied by the AFL, with the usual disastrous results. An Aborigine footballer’s issues with assimilation have nothing to do with any failure within the AFL, as so well stressed by Putz Smith. It’s the government interference as well as do-gooders like Flanagan that lead to races of people like the Aborigines being mired in object poverty and third-world life styes. The junk put forth by all the academic sociologists only teaches Aborigines to be helpless just like the American Indian, whether it is the Apache, Sioux, or Lumbee tribes. Lumbees?

What happens when a tribe of people doesn’t have government and bureaucratic interference? Meet the Lumbees:

On to Thorpe and his non-performance in qualifying for the Olympics … accolades a plenty for Thorpe’s speaking after his failure to qualify … back to feel-good caller who says, among other things, “that if somebody needs help because they have a weakness then it’s up to their employer to try and find ways to help them.” So that’s what businesses for! Remember that when you take out a second mortgage for your business. … KB states that many players have weaknesses and AFL clubs have about five specialist coaches ready to remedy weaknesses.

From the files Blue Bagging

Simon from Abbotsford: I have some grave concerns about the health of out footballing competition. I’m sincerely ringing up here today to say that I’ve been watching football for a long time … and in these days of equalization, every fan should be able to turn up to a game with a realistic hope that they’re at least gonna be competitive. Now, what are we gonna do about Carlton, Kevin? They have no hope against Richmond. We will eviscerate them, and I think, maybe some concessions or what have you are in line, because I have some concerns for the team and their supporters.

KB: Well I think Richmond’s gonna start favourite's in that opening game now, Simon. That’s one of the most intelligent callers we’ve had for a long, long time, [Putz].
Putz: Yes.

KB: They might need serious help, Carlton. They might be as bad off as maybe the Suns or GWS?
Putz: Well Kevin, they haven’t won a game. I read Brett Ratten said, “look, all we want to do is get through this with a fit list and we’ve achieved that.” He’ll be without Jamison, Walker, Duigan, Laidler, and Warnock, against your mob.(Wait on one Tiger talkfest moment; I thought Putz had dumped the Dons by changing sash colours? I guess he forgot?)

KB: There’s not quite a fit list. They’ve had a shocking pre-season.
Putz: Well he’s achieved nothing has he? He hasn’t won a game.

KB: Well they’ve had a shocking pre-season in terms of losing players and also players have got to come back after not playing a great deal of football. So it’s gonna be a pretty tough first-up game now for Carlton. … I wouldn’t be surprised if Richmond doesn’t start near-favourite's in this game.

Thorpe’s midriff was a cause for concern for one caller who thinks the Thorpe was kidding himself … No discussion here on the ever growing list of once pampered media-darling swimmers who have found earning a living in the real world and/or being out of the spotlight of the nation’s affection ain’t what it’s cracked up to be. Looks like Thorpe missed out on one of those environment-saving six-figure jobs that were being fabricated in a false green energy economy.

Goose of the Week: Warren Snowden for suggesting an age limit of indigenous players.
Guus of the Week: Ian Thorpe for is dignity after failing so badly in is attempt to qualify for the Olympics.

Adam Freier regularly talks with Marko and Ox re Super Rugby and Rita talks with KB weekly about it. They have the Storm hour with Finey and they regularly have Storm players interviewed throughout the day. Then of course as you mention we get to hear Rebecca Wilson.

But of course I'm sure that doesn't suffice for you.

Are they paid by SEN? No!!!.

Adam Frier is paid by the Rebels as a player

The Storm hour has Storm players and the employee of the storm (was Catcus chris Crouch who was the media manager, Now I think Frank Ponissi who is the General Manager

Rita has got more creditability than Hansie Cronje betting on Cricket. She is in the sport because "hot guys" on the field. What sport or knowledge of sport has she got? Not much from my listening on Casual Friday even thou I do enjoy it.

Rebecca Wilson is there really because she in bed with the ex News CEO John Hartigan as they are a couple.

I want SEN to tell me when the next Barry Micheals belt is on or when the next Roller Derby is on(yes it going on in the heart of melbourne). Mark Fine and Russel Gilbert used to do that on there weekend show(show how long I have been listening to SEN for!!!.

SEN was like that when they first started. Best Hour on Radio was the Sen interview that were recorded about 5 years ago.

I notice SEN plus has been added to DAB radio. I hope we can get some great coverage of other minor sports.

As a Sports Fan in all, Taking off the AFL glasses that I have. I am very disapointed. The percentage would be 90% AFL and 10% other sports and as as a Sports mad nation like Melbourne that is poor.

I worked out of a SEN Sehedule. That is 2.75 hours roughly. That is 1% of the SEN coverage every week and I have not inculded Soccer in it as well.

Really poor coverage for Sports

perhaps turn off the radio and focus on sleeping?

That is what a sleep Timer is for.

Re: The SEN Thread 9

Harftime has Gareth Delve for Union, some Fox Sports guy for NRL, Adam Peacock for Aleague and one of the Diegos for soccer as well.

KB has a storm player on at least once a week.

Do not get me start on the 4 diegos. What a bunch of Richard Craniums I have even listened to. It might have been a Soccer show but only talk a small bit of Soccer and then comparing each other appendages. A bit like the Midnight to Dawn show.

Re: The SEN Thread 9

Good to see Teo reads this thread:D
Rita just talks drivel full stop. Trip to the shallow end of the pool when she's on.
Monty's beggining to sound like an MTR shock jock.Ahh remember MTR:D

Re: The SEN Thread 9

Agree with the sentiments re. Saturation of the footy
Unfortunately if you hear the adverts it's all AFL, so I guess we're going to get a lot of AfL content

Re: The SEN Thread 9

Such a sad day, it’s hard to comprehend the news that Jimmy Stynes has passed away. Everyone in this country has been praying for Jim right throughout his two and a half year battle with cancer. His sporting story is a famous one and was admired throughout the sporting community. His work with the reach organisation, helping kids obtain better life was an amazing contribution. His courage, his resilience, and selfless attitude during his illness won the hearts of everyone. All the football world mourns today.

Pick up a newspaper in Melbourne during footy season and tell me what percentage footy coverage gets compared to other sports. I'd say it's a fair reflection of how big footy is in this town, and thus SEN's content reflects it too.

Let's look at some of the contributors outside of footy on the station.

Rebels/Super Rugby Freier/Delve/Gerrard/Rita from Rebels
NRL: Matt Russell/Hoffman/Wilson/Storm Hour plus other Storm chats
Soccer: Bosnich/Zappas/Peacock/Carlos/Davutovic/Bolton/Collins all regulars, plus the occasional Victory or other Heart interview.

Then there's Schibecs and McConville on motorsports, Hoggy/Smokey plus the Vics guys for the cricket, Ed/Steve doing US sports, Marko/Rohan/Craig Spence talking golf, Barry Michael and Fight Night for boxing, Bryan Martin/Richo/Craig Williams talking racing, Gazey and Purchase talking basketball, BP and Pete Mercardo doing tennis, Keenan/Rockna for cycling, plus there's a regular Olympics segment if I'm not mistaken.

Then there's the "non-sports" segments, as they like to do some lifestyle these days. Donna Aston/Paul Coburn/Craig Harper doing health and fitness, the beer/gadgets/finance/movies on TRH, plus they like ripping a singalong on MG these days too.

How much other sports do they cover off on ST on AW in a 2 hour show? What's the percentage. Nearly every show I would argue is 90 mins AFL.

Plenty of other stuff there on SEN, but I just think footy drives this town from February-October, and fair enough - it's the biggest show in the country!

Re: The SEN Thread 9

When the station rated well mid-last year, Barry Quick suggested that the boost in listeners, and the reduction in money-haemorrhaging, was due to him cutting 'obscure' sports and focusing more on Aussie Rules.

"Quick says that when he arrived, although losing money, SEN was a business with a niche that owned a definitive position, which are two hallmarks of success in radio. He focused on trimming costs and honed in on the belief that in Melbourne, one sport is king: Aussie rules. He looked at the schedule and noticed a cluster of shows focusing on obscure sports, each with a team of up to three presenters"
