this is the email i received from SEN the other day

Tony Schibecci has been promoted and is now working across the day on SEN. Brett Phillips will be talking over weekend afternoons with the end of the footy season and Mark Franklin and the one week at a time team have been moved to Saturday night from Saturday mid-dawn so the WSO team have all been moved to more prime time-slots.
At this stage we will not be replacing Tony and the WSO team– rather using some of our archival material that goes to air once and is never heard again. \
Thanks MJ

Yeah i know i think Billy only likes calling in the middle of the night as he thinks not as many are listening because he never calls during the day.

It's great that all the overnight people are getting some decent gigs but still that is not the point. The point is we want an overnight fix.

-Ben

Callers at night got more airtime than the day. Everyone seems to get cut off during the day time. As much as Billy was full of crap, he was great entertainment at night.

They also have some good interviews with people from the other side of the world.

Yeah but even finey's final siren. He would never call before midnight. Always called after.

-Ben

I dont listen to WSO when Tony is on, so im not missing out.

However, if OWAAT is gone, then i will be doing some protesting.

same

the thing that pisses me off about it all is that whenever shit like this happens they pretend like everything is normal, if they were so professional and wanted respect they should grow some balls and actually come out with the truth to their listeners rather than hoping no one notices what just happened

maybe guys like rob harding saw the writing on the wall and got out when they could, cant blame them

Agree with that.

There was a HS article a few months back about 3AW and how they have managed to deal with all of their dramas, which is to be open and public about them all and not protect their on-air staff. The Derryn Hinch comments about David Hookes, the Rex Hunt prostitution story etc etc.

In the end the public respect the honesty and will stay listening if they know what is going on.

From Mark Franklin on OWAAT Forums.

"I'm sure that for anyone attending the function tonight they will find out more than they are supposed to!

Nah just joking, there's unfortunately not much more to it than what Zam said above. Management recognised that there would be a backlash but it is a (cost-cutting) business decision.

They need to run the station profitably and WSO was hindering that goal.

I expressed my disappointment particularly in regards to the product identity, (as Zam touched on) and I should add that management genuinely shared my disappointment. But SEN is a business and the figures don't add up.

As for OWAAT well we will be on from 7-12pm Saturday Nights right through Summer, which we are really excited about. And thankfully you will still be catching plenty of the Sciabecster on SEN doing 'On the Grid' and in a bunch of new roles.

I'll see plenty of you tonight, and no doubt we'll talk more then!"

This gets more F**Ked by the day
Lets get this straight

-Shibecci and BP get taken off without any chance for them to tell us a thanks or a thats it for WSO or whats happened
-Mgt at Sen say nothing at all
-Mgt at Sen dont reply to our emails -well nothing from that de fazio person to my email
-Sen official website still says WSO is on each night

But the first statement we hear about anything comes from a part timer in Mark Frankiln who hasnt been at Sen anywhere as long as Shibecci and BP.
And on an unnofficial Sen website as well.

Where does Mark Franklin get off saying things like " WSO was hindering that goal or Sen is a business and figures dont add up " surely this should have been stated by Sen mgt on the Sen website and not by a weekend part timer on his own site.
And for Franklin to be even laying out the plans for what jobs Shibecci will be doing in the future again on his own non Sen website is so out of line.
I would have liked to have seen BP do this Saturday show but whatever is happening Franklin shouldnt be the one telling us this and its just making the Sen mgt and the Sen website both looking more stupid

What is the exact website address to read where these comments were posted as I would like to have a look
With sen going to ground and having a no comment seige mentality about it , it is surprising that this Franklin would feel the need to break ranks and post this on another website and be the spokesperson for why it happened and what will be happening especially if he contradicts the actual; sen website
Typical of those running sen letting a boy do a mans job , the programming department at sen seem to have no public or people skills training at all

Go to www.oneweekatatime.com.au then click on forums then click on the thread saying what's going on or something like that then you will see it.

I think Mark Franklin is just a very honest bloke plus that is his forum that he has probably put his money into and it is on open forum where he can post what he wants to.

I don't think SEN don't want the public to know they are just saying nothing because they don't want to look as dodgy as they are.

-Ben

Yeah tried reading it but got nowhere.:thumbsd:

You'd think though that getting rid of staff now wouldn't work anyway since when he got the arse WSO was still on.

This is a bad move by SEN:thumbsd:. So many of us work odd hours, WSO has a big enough audience.

Basically, its an unfair dismissal. SEN tried to say that they had less than 100 employees and that therefore he couldn't bring his claim. B.Eva put on evidence that they had more than 100. The Industrial Relations Commission found that SEN was in a position to put on better evidence that they had less than 100, but they didn't, so B.Eva's case stays alive...

This has always been my point when I've basically said "cool it" to all the people being so critical of certain personalities.....someone might just take notice and think its just not worth going on...and before we know it, we could be without SEN....that isn't a good thought.....whinge long enough and it WILL be gone......is that what you people out there want??......I think not.......perfect example.....everybody whinged about WaverleyPark, eventually AFL was convinced it wasn't wanted, so sold it.....WRONG.....but too late!!!.....we whinged to much, instead of being positive about all that was right with it........if we are not careful, the same thing will happen to SEN......overall, it is a great station, lets pump it up and make sure we continue to have a sport station....

I think you miss the point of what generates ratings. A show or a presenter doesn't have to be liked to own a listenership, it need only be interesting, entertaining or informative.

The Footy Show is a testimony to that. I've knocked up on the number of posts about how bad that show is or how pathetic Sam Newman is, many of whom claim that they will never again watch the show. I know, I'm one of them - hardly seen the show since before the turn of the century. I reckon it's rubbish and my time is too valuable to waste it on such self-absorbed feckin egotistical shit. But still it stays on in prime time, generating ratings well beyond that usually associated with sports shows. There's enough of a low-brow audience to overcome the fact that the show polarises the football public, and if anything thrives on the negativity of the criticism and controversy.

Similarly, SEN will not down go down the gurgler due to selected public criticism of it's presenters, or widespread negative discussions of its content. It will die only from the apathy and indifference of it's listenership (or ex-listenership, as the case maybe).

Hey I've got good news!
I told you that SEN would still be having a grand final eve show!
Hosted by Brett Phillips it will be on from now till 5am when the fishing show will be on.
This must be the last ever WSO program.
So make sure you are listening in.
I will be recording it so if anybody wants it send me a pm.

Enjoy!!

BTW first few hours we have Peakie, Milnie and Howard.

Not sure about the rest.

-Ben

I remember when Brett Phillips was on a couple of nights ago someone asked who was meant to be on tomorrow and he said ummm i don't know actually.

I wonder if he did no but couldn't say or whether he really had no idea...

-Ben
It sounds like he knew. He wouldn't care though because as SEN said in that email, he's been offered a job in a different timeslot.

Just had a thought- what if Tony decided to wrap up WSO after reading all the bullshit comments on here about it and about himself? Its always been his show and maybe after all the bad feedback and unfair shit people hang on him he's decided he'll switch to days full time?

Management might not bother replacing him if its cheaper to do reruns and the ratings don't drop too much. Who knows?

Tony reads this thread and has posted a few times and maybe he reckons the **** wits who always bag him are in the majority.
The thing is, no-one hated him enough to stop listening to him, they just acknowledged his weaknesses (me included). As I've said before, the daytime role of reading sport scores suits him well, as he's a professional announcer - just don't get him involved in any in-depth discussion.

Something that reminded me of Schibeci today was when I caught 9am with David and Kim. They had a panel of Michael Christian, Christi Malthouse and that Sports Tonight bloke that gets it on with Sandra Sully talking about the AFL Grand Finals. Kim had her fair share of things to say and was completely out of her depth (why didn't she shut up?). Reminded me of Schibeci bluffing his way through discussions to a small extent. ;) Tony had the last laugh though, finally having normal working hours (although he would no longer get penalty rates and it's doubtful he earns much more in his role as a newsreader).

dont throw the baby out with the glass of water brother18 hours of sport is better than none if they have to cust cots to stay profitable and keep going 6am to midnight is that a better thing i think so
I always thought you were incoherent but some of the points you raised on this thread are starting to make sense. :)

Yeah, Rob Harding was a good talent and good for him that he jumped a sinking ship. Smart young man he is. The way SEN handled the cancellation of probably the highest rating overnight show going around is very ordinary. If overnight ratings were measured, maybe the show would have been saved?

It's more the fact that no notice was given. The station had to be more open about this to its listeners who were obviously abundant, not forcing us to read between the lines with the departure of Harding, the fact that this GF party was held 2 days after the show was axed, etc. (incidentally, did anyone here go to that party?)

I was a fan of the show and tuned in for the first half hour each night to get a fix of chat on the day's sport. Looks like I'll have to start making my own late night playlists to listen to as I go to bed, but it won't be the same.

Hey I doubt Tony would receive penalty rates doing midnight to dawn. If 5aa is anything to go by their midnight to dawn announcers don't get any penalty rates. I heard an announcer say once that he doesn't get anymore $20 an hour.
I'd imagine Tony would be doing the day time shift now and not getting much less money at all.

Also how do you know it is an extremely high rated midnight to dawn show?
They do get a lot of callers but they are always pretty much the same ones. Plus they only get callers for 2 hours the rest of the show is pretty much interviewers and/or replays.

Although I'm sure the ratings would have been reasonable but not great.

Anyway i'm going to sit back and listen to the final bit of WSO tonight with Peakie Phillips and co.

Unless the decision is reversed of course!

-Ben

Milnie just gave one last GBU CREWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

But he did mention that they will be back...i guess they are clinging onto the feeling that management reverse the decision.

Damn, missed out on that. So they've confronted the decision finally? What else did they say?

As for the ratings, sure not that many people call in regularly, but that's because most are doing shift work and have it on in the background, or are listening to it as they go to sleep. After 2.00 it's mostly interviews is it? If so, just have the guys on from say, 12am to 2am. If you're only paying them $30 an hour, that's not much to part with, even for a station as cheap as SEN :)

Well all the extras are volunteer actually.
Tony or Brett Phillips are the only ones getting paid midnight to dawn.
Not sure how the OWAAT boys work whether they split the money or they both get paid because it is a particular show....

Yeah i think they should just have 12-2 too and then they go home the rest interviews. It would be pretty good!

They just sorta mentioned that it has been good. Billy came on and Brett Phillips said make sure you keep listening Bill.

They haven't said anything about it directly but they have talked about it.
Brett keeps on referring to the fact that this is not a replay we are live on air.

I am recording it if anybody wants a copy i'll put it up sometime tomorrow i think.

What a stupid stupid decision. Ahhh the joy of hearing that crashing bore Mark Doran's show replayed. Business decision pleasssssssse, spare us the corporate clap trap.As per usual with S.E.N nobody dare mentions what has happened, fear of retribution I would think.Just as the pathetic treatment of Bruce Eva and the ongoing silence another poor effort from S.E.N:thumbsd:

Going to miss the gladiators:mad::mad:

I agree. Should just go to 2am.

Was fantastic hearing Brett Phillips + co. overnight.......once again, showed just how good he is.......I agree with the 12 - 2 am idea.....dont usually listen much after that anyway...

So Tony and Brett are the only ones getting paid overnight? Then just get Peaky and Howard to host the gladiators on their own. Even get one of the callers like Steve from Sydney to come down and do the show for free (couldn't think of sensible caller that lives in Melbourne ;)).
