News The Skipper booked for Speeding

Would be surprised beyond words if anyone here, or in the wider AFL community, hasn't been guilty of the same offence at some point in time, if not many.

Doesn't excuse it, but he's human, just like us.

Of course, he must be made an example of because of his standing, but hopefully the sense of outrage will be measured.

"Geelong captain Joel Selwood was booked for speeding on Friday afternoon and will lose his licence for one month from 24 March. Selwood was driving at 127km per hour in a 100km per hour zone.

Geelong’s acting CEO Justin Reeves stated that Selwood is aware that his actions are disappointing.

“Joel and the club are disappointed in his actions. Joel informed the club immediately of the issue and the club has since updated its key stakeholders,” Reeves said. .......

Not the worst offence but unexpected from Selwood and obviously matters a bit more than usual since he's the captain and the partnership with TAC

A few kms over I think most people would bear but 127 is ridiculously dangerous. He should be made an example of.

Unexpected cause of his general nature & respect across the football n day 2 day community, but a big invitation for all the haters and do gooders to hang sel on this.
Understand what seriousness the mac will take on it, but he's no buddy franklin *if ya know what i mean [emoji13]

As much as I love Joel, 27 clicks over is bloody stupid and no accident. I don't see how the club can keep him as captain and retain its integrity, especially considering its partnership with the TAC.
I didn't realise clubs picked their captains based on how many demerit points they had!

If it were 127 through a built up area, then yes, I'd agree it's dangerous.

In the meantime, 127 is about the average speed of traffic between Canberra and Sydney, and I'd argue that outside bad weather conditions, that it's relatively safe.

But either way it's illegal, so he'll be made an example of.

I think the research would very much disagree with you.

And 127 between Sydney and Canberra?? On Qantas??

Nothing to do with the demerits. The issue will be a lot about a player, worse that its the captain who many think should be leading by example, showing a blatant disregard for both the law and the safety of others. If the club keep him as captain they will effectively be saying that his actions are OK (as much as their words say they are 'disappointing') for a leader of the club. Putting an important partnership in jeopardy will also play a big part.

I travel the road to the sh*thole and back quite frequently, and assure you that few respect 100 / 110 as the case may be.

Anyhow, just a personal opinion. I think our highways could sustain higher speeds, a la NT and Germany, but that will never happen on a wider scale.

I am quite sure that the club can come up with other sorts of sanctions that will reflect the seriousness of the offense, given our partnership with the TAC, without resorting to removing the captaincy from Joel.

I thought I read he had been overtaking...

If it was nearly 30k over consistently then sure slam him, if he was booked while overtaking I have more sympathy as you have to briefly drive over the limit to get around some.

Righto. Bit of mayo saying 127 would be average though.

I'm glad we don't. The quality and design of our roads doesn't match Germany's autobahns and the research is clear on the risk that speed generates. Too many die on our roads as it is and too many of those are avoidable if speed was moderated

C'mon mate. You don't need to go 127 to go past a car going 98.

Yes, our roads don't match the autobahns.

And I near guarantee the average between here and Sydney is around 120.

Anyhow, back to point, I just hope Sels isn't crucified as if he were a lone sinner.

We don't know the circumstances is all I am saying.

Could have been at the bottom of a hill, could have been trying to get in before an overtaking lane ended, he could have just been reckless
