How long would you spend on the wrong side of the road if you attempted to overtake a car doing 98km/h at 100km/h?
If I recall correctly from my high school physics, time = distance/speed.

So assume you've got to clear (conservatively) 25 metres to overtake. That's 0.025km.

So time = 0.025/2 = 0.0125hrs = 45 seconds.

Not sure what that proves but there you go. :)

A differential of 0.57 metres per second, so about 35 seconds if you want to clear them by 10 metres.......and assuming my math is correct.

Alternative maths.

Would be surprised beyond words if anyone here, or in the wider AFL community, hasn't been guilty of the same offence at some point in time, if not many.

Doesn't excuse it, but he's human, just like us.

Of course, he must be made an example of because of his standing, but hopefully the sense of outrage will be measured.
27 km over the speed limit. No can't say that I have. And it's not human to do such an act when you are the captain of a club that relies on tac sponsorship. They will demand he misses round 1.

We don't know the circumstances is all I am saying.

Could have been at the bottom of a hill, could have been trying to get in before an overtaking lane ended, he could have just been reckless
Sounding awfully like a hawks supporter here. There is zero excuse for going that fast over a speed limit.

I'm glad we don't. The quality and design of our roads doesn't match Germany's autobahns and the research is clear on the risk that speed generates. Too many die on our roads as it is and too many of those are avoidable if speed was moderated

You don't know what road he was on. The Princes Highway and new ring road are well designed, modern, single direction roads of similar quality to the Autobahns. Hence why the RACV supports a raising of the limit to 110km/h from Werribee through to Torquay.

The limit on British motorways is 70mph which is 112kmh. But most cars in the outside lane travel at 80mph which is 128kmh. If you get caught at any speed up to 90mph (144kmh) you will just get a fine and points on your licence.

Most high speed accidents in Australia happen on lower quality, dual direction country roads.

Well I would be pretty confident to say that if i was overtaking someone in a 100 zone, i would have been doing north of 120 before.. not every time, but sometimes you need to put the foot down to get past...

for all we know he could have been driving to the letter of the law for 100ks and then got nabbed for 8 seconds of being over.
Why are you trying to overtake a car going 100km in a 100km zone.

Not a good look irrespective of how you paint it.

That said, we dont know the specifics and it could easily have been overtaking on flat road in a v8 with plenty of space.

Rules are rules and not all cops are Cats supporters. He should take his clip on the chin, visit the trauma wards and lose a match payment or something relevant.

Talk of anything more is muckraking. Its a speeding fine.

Move on.

So you're on the wrong side of the road for over a kilometre? That's a traffic hazard. Best to put your foot down for a few seconds without looking at your speedo.

Again, I don't know the specifics and don't care. Evidence shows it's dangerous and that's enough for me. The culture of excusing speeding is a large part of the problem.

Who is? It bears no resemblance o anything we are taking about. At least not that we know.

My 100k is faster than their 100k.

Happens all the time.

As for driving over here, the freeway fast lane you'd better be doing more than 65 MPH.. or you will get blown off the road. Doesnt make it right, but its the law of the jungle.

80 is the average.

And let me tell you - if Sel was driving anything like my 2016 V8 twin Turbo S6 - 127kph is nothing is cars like that.

I would if it is one of those nuffies that you get stuck behind that lets their speed fluctuate between 80km and 100km in a 100km zone. Of course they will do 100km when the overtaking lane comes up and it is your only chance to safely pass. I'm going to go over and take the opportunity to get by in that situation. Most people would.

Never ever seen anyone booked in a situation like that before. Cops don't tend to sit on overtaking lanes. More likely Selwood has just transgressed the speed limit on the open road.

That's what I do on the open road when there's zero traffic ahead coming toward you. That situation is also where cops wait in hiding for drivers who decide to pass others doing 95 or less. It's like shooting fish in a barrel. Maybe that was the situation Selwood was in.

I wait to see if more info is forthcoming before passing judgement.

The question was asked, how long would you spend on the wrong side of the road if you attempted to overtake a car doing 98km/h at 100km/h? Your answer was 45 seconds. At 100kph that's a distance of 1.25 km.

I am arguing that the safest way to overtake is to carefully evaluate the situation and when safe to do so accelerate so you are on the wrong side of the road for the shortest time. And you should be paying full attention to the road situation not have your eyes on your speedo.

As much as I love Joel, 27 clicks over is bloody stupid and no accident. I don't see how the club can keep him as captain and retain its integrity, especially considering its partnership with the TAC.

Many players at clubs have committed many worse indiscretions and still remained leaders. He will probably be fined and also asked/forced to donate money to a road safety charity (as he should be) but there is basically zero chance he will be removed as captain over it, nor should there be. Regardless of an albeit bad error in judgement he is still our best candidate for captain by some distance.

It was a completely made up example with zero to do with Selwood though who was going 127km/h in unknown circumstances.
