Absolutely correct.

Just as sponsors should not tolerate sporting bodies that engage in conduct directly at odds with their core mission.
Then I'd suggest who ever did their risk annalists was pissed at the time, they should have sponsored the temperance movements in stead of football clubs, the lousy 250K would buy a few tambourines they could have their logo on.

TAC missed an opportunity here and their hypocrisy is extraordinary. How many footy clubs have they been through now? How many of their own employees and executives have been caught speeding? The road toll is actually 41.9% down on last year 62 down to 36. They could've used Selwood to promote safe driving by simply stating " even the best of us get caught speeding". TAC are dickheads! The AFL should tell TAC to stay away from football.

That's a bit misleading, the rolling 12 month stats are about the same as the previous 12 months and only one below the 5-year average. The start of last year was a particularly bad period, but the 5-year average for the same period (year-to-date) is 49. Still down a bit to 36, but nothing substantial.

Better off looking at the serious injury crashes and they're up 40% over the last 10 years. There's a huge increase in serious crashes, only safer cars and roadsides are saving more lives than previous. Fatalities are the tip of the iceberg in terms of serious road trauma.

TAC get to make a stand, it gets in the papers and it shows that there are consequences beyond fines and demerit points for poor driver behaviour.

They probably get $250k worth of publicity every time they drop sponsorship of a sporting club for the same reason.

The big shame is that the TAC is one of the biggest employers in Geelong, it was a hometown sponsorship. There aren't a lot of other corporate-size businesses in Geelong to fill the void.

Was he driving a ford when he was speeding? Lol

He was driving a Ford rushing to a hospital to swipe his GMHBA card to make a claim :p

Just said on SEN he was overtaking, whilst it doesn't justify any speeding offence, we all have at some point overtaken a car and realised half way through that the speed is slipping way over the speed limit. If he is going to TAC and saying what can I do to fix this and they just pull their sponsorship, well I am guessing this is the end of TAC sponsoring any AFL club.

Really? "The best of us" ??? I love Selwood as a player, but let's not get crazy.

While frustrating to lose any sponsorship deal, you have to wonder with Cook saying that the TAC approached them in 2015 after the Simpson incident "that another incident of note would see them relinquish their sponsorship" if the TAC were ultimately looking for a way out of the sponsorship without actually looking like the bad guys who just pulled out of the deal.

At what stage does the 'deal' made in 2015 no longer come into consideration - if this was 5 years down the track, where we had a new president, coach & a larger turn over of players (maybe even a new captain), would they have reverted back to the 2015 'deal'. Was there a chance that at some stage we would have seen it wiped clean and a fresh start between both parties or was it going to be hanging over our head as long as they were a sponsor?

As others have mentioned, there may have been options for alternative action and to use Selwood to set an example that mistakes happen to the best of us but we can all learn from them.

I think its more the idea that Selwood is a known face and a public identity - would make it easier to run a campaign along that line rather than using John Smith from down the road who was caught doing 130km with a few mates in the car and got a speeding fine for doing so.

I'm more of the opinion that AFL players are just people like you and me. That was the angle that was missed by TAC.

Holding them up as better people seems really weird. Being All Australian Captain doesn't actually elevate his status as person :-)

The opportunity for TAC was in the responses from bozos like Mark Robinson saying "we have all been caught speeding, leave him alone". Speed kills, even if you are a footballer. The attitude that "it's normal" is what TAC are trying to get around aren't they?

I haven't heard Selwood say that shite. He immediately realised he had done wrong - as I do when I get caught speeding !!

Clearly the club needs new sponsors incapable of attaining the moral high ground. From here on in its gambling companies, big tobacco and Serco all the way.

Genuine question outside of the current issue:

As this type of sponsorship with any club clearly has affects on players lives outside of the club, would the AFLPA ask for any clarification of try to get clauses helping the players out if TAC or any other similar entity was to enter into any sponsorship agreements moving forward?

What I have taken from all of this is that it was Dawson Simpsons fault for pushing us to the edge previously

:D :D :D

Do we have any other sponsorship deals that hinge on human behaviour like this? Might be wise to cut them all and look for 'safer' deals elsewhere.

I heard Zach Guthrie accidentally went overdrawn on his bank account. NAB sponsorship of the AFL gone!!!

" even the best of us get caught speeding".
Ha, ha - worst advertising message ever for the TAC! For years they've made out if you speed you're a moron and putting lives in danger now they're going to say even 'the best of us' get caught speeding?!? Also we're not talking about the standard 60 in a 50 zone or 110 in a 100 zone fine, he was 27km's over the limit.
It's about time there were actually some consequences for actions down at Geelong so I hope they strip him of the captaincy.

Holy crap, I think he genuinely believes we should axe Selwood :drunk:
The same person who was advocating that Geelong trade Selwood out while he has "currency".
