Matthew McConaughey to take The Stand for Stephen King adaptation
Oscar-winning actor tipped to play villain in four-film version of King’s epic novel, directed by The Fault in Our Stars’s Josh Boone

Matthew McConaughey is tipped to take the role of villainous Randall Flagg in The Stand, a Hollywood franchise based on the 1978 Stephen King novel. Backed by Warner Bros, The Stand will be released as four standalone pictures directed by Josh Boone. Discussing the project on Kevin Smith’s podcast, Boone described The Stand as “the Godfather of post-apocalyptic thrillers.”

Conceived as an American version of The Lord of the Rings, King’s 1200-page epic spotlights the battle between good and evil after a deadly virus has wiped out the bulk of the world’s population. McConaughey looks set to play the story’s chief antagonist, a grinning cowboy with supernatural powers who establishes a power base in the ruins of Las Vegas.

McConaughey won the 2014 best actor Oscar for his acclaimed turn in The Dallas Buyers Club and recently appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar and as an anguished Louisiana cop in the TV series True Detective. Boone directed the teen weepy The Fault in Our Stars and has also been booked to direct another Stephen King adaptation, Lisey’s Story. The Stand was previously made into a TV mini-series back in 1994

I know there was a mini series yonks ago but cannot recall if it was good bad or ugly or if I even watched it,

Just thinking they needed to grab someone with a little more presence for the Randall Flag role. I loved the book as a kid hoping this works on the screen.

Most Steven King books translate poorly to screen (yes there are exceptions).

Since a lot of The Stand is external, rather than in someone's head it might be okay.

I would have thought they would want someone more baddass for Randall Flagg.

Good luck.

It was one of those 7 hour Stephen King tv movies that were around 20-25 years ago. It was quite good with some decent actors in it.

Yeah the original flick definitely stacked up a lot higher than a lot of other Stephen King adaptations have. Was really long.

Also one of my favourite books and am definitely in anticipation on a more modern take of it on film.

CGI Hand of God!

Mini series has Rob Lowe, Molly Ringwald and Gary Sinise in it. I like it but mainly because I love the book so much, I have the dvd. Hopefully they make a better fist of it this time round.

I want to see The Kid and Trashy tearing across the country in The Kid's deuce couple. In fact there's a lot they left out and characters that just didn't get a mention ie Larry leaving the city with Rita and her od'ing in the tent one night and then Larry hooking up with Nadine Cross and Leo.

Stuart, Harold, Franny and Glenn's shootout with the slavers and rescuing the women.

I know it's a very long book but there were important bits they missed in the mini series and parts they could have probably left out.

Misery ?...
Probably the closest to the book it of them all although the violence was tamed compared to the book.

IT movie was very weak compared to the book which is understandable , several things in the book that will never be allowed in a movie.

As for the stand it's my favourite of next to IT and the dark towers, last I've heard they are potentially looking at making it 4 movies all rated R.

If that happens I'll be very confident it'll match the book's tone.

I would like The Dark Tower to be adapted as I've actually read that.

Still reading gunslinger lol so a long way to go.

They were looking at making it a tv series with Ron Howard at one stage directing it I think, no idea where it is now.

On the stand I'm disappointed that Affleck Wont be directing it, but having the studio drop the idea of condensing it into one film and into 4 films now potential makes up for that. Being rated R will be even better although I doubt the studio will go along with it as it limits the audience and revenue.

Has there been a Stephen King adaptation (apart from Kubrick's 'The Shining') that wasn't a complete load of shit?
The Green Mile and The Shawshank Redemption did ok. ;)
Both shorter stories and not horror though. Ironic that he's best known as an author of horror, but his critically acclaimed movies haven't been.

Though they look like they are doing this right. The problem with his horror movie adaptations is they've generally cut out large parts of the books. As a rough rule of thumb 100 pages of a book gives around 1 hour of movie if adapted largely 'as is'. With his horror stories often running into hundreds of pages, a 90 - 120 minute movie has failed to do justice to almost all of them.

I liked The Stand and IT as mini-series best of his horror adaptations as they were that longer format and were truer to the books. With The Stand being a series of movies one thing I hope that gets more attention is Harold's path to redemption, only to be killed. The other one I'd like to get a passing reference is have a nod to The Dark Tower, with once almost everyone has died, show Roland and company travelling through their short stay on the Super-flu Earth before travelling back to his world. They don't need to talk or be explained. If people haven't read The Dark Tower, they'd just be able to take it as a handful of survivors sticking together, if you have read it, it'd be a cool nod.
