for people who rant on about how Sydneysiders care what their neigbours think, theres no shortage of melbournians trying to talk up the city and say how they are better than Sydney. Seems its the only thing they care about, and would take offence if someone actually said they found Sydney better than Melbourne.

Melbourne people have a big complex towards Sydneysiders. Always have. I cop it every time I am down there.

But the funny thing is they all act as if Sydney people actually care, when in fact Sydney people love our Melbourne cousins.

Jan Brady syndrome.

hmmm, Redcliffe. Not the best of places.

But I was more bored in Perth than I have been on any of my away trips.
No different to Brisbane or Adelaide. Obviously not as busy, open, and convenient as Melbourne and Sydney, but that's the trade off for living in a more relaxed lifestyle.

I found Perth frustratingly limiting in terms of nighttime activities. Sure people say Northbridge is the happening place, but on Saturday night it was a dead as a doornail. On Sunday night it was near comatose.
Same as above. Smaller city, less places to go. Try Subiaco, Claremont, and Fremantle nightlife next time you go.
In Sydney I'd think about going out at 10:30-11pm. In Perth people would be thinking about coming home at that time.
I haven't been out in Northbridge for a long time, but last time I did places were open until light.

Ok I'm gay, so with only one trashy bar I was kind of uninspired with things.
There used to be a place in James St Northbridge called Connections. Don't know if it's still there and can't vouch whether it's good or not.

I have to say I really took a dislike to the architectural style of many of the newer suburbs in Perth such as Hillarys and East Perth.
East Perth is nice for a new suburb. Nicer than Wolli Creek and Waterloo. Ten times nicer actually.

All the house kind of looked really sterile and artificial.
Err, they're new. What else do you expect?

But the majority of it looks as though it has just been made in the last 5 years. Should I say this, but the place reeks of NEW MONEY (with no taste).
This just sounds down right snobby.

New money with no taste? New time you're there, go to Peppermint Grove, Dalkeith, Claremont, and Mosman Bay. I'm sure you'll change your mind. Old money with plenty of style.

He said it was the dream of many WA people to get out of WA and go to live in Melbourne.
What was his name? Jeff White? Fraser Gehrig? or Suzi Olsen?

I would talk about Sydney to a couple of people and people would kind of react as if I was talking about something from outer space. Weird.
They probably thought you were trying to crack onto them.

They don't call Perth Dullsville for nothing.

Personally I think Brisbane has the most to offer in excitement and interest.

Sydney & Melbourne are allright but Brisbane has the sunshine coast to the north , Gold Coast to the south and Toowomba etc to the west. Pity about the amount of footy coverage you get there.
I think Brisbane is a hole. Have been there a number of times and it just doesn't stack up. It's like a crap version of Perth. Full of bloody Queenslanders too.

I think it's the other way around.

look at all the vitriole on these boards for a start.

I'm not sure if BF is a representative cross-section of the community.

Also, the only thing that Melbourne really gets stuck into Sydney about is the football, which is what BF is about.

Well, having lived in both cities I only saw it from Sydney making comments about Melbourne. I suppose it depends on the particular people you are with. However, I did notice the media plays it up on both sides, but more so in the Sydney papers.

??

Melbourne hardly get a mention in the media. The only time Sydneysiders get a bit iffy about Melbourne when it gets awarded the most livable city. That aside there really isnt that much to report from Melbourne besides footy and maybe some art exhibitions.

We are too busy with our own lives to give a rats toss about anyone else, why would we care about Melbourne people?

Re: Re: A Sydneysider who has just returned from Perth

I moved from Sydney to Perth when I was 25, I packed two bags, jumped on a place and only planned to stay a year.

I haven't been back in 5 years.

That said, I too was bored immensely when I first arrived here. The CBD and Northbridge are a big part of that.

Anyway...

Friends stay in Fairfield and think Sydney sucks... you'd laugh them out of the city

Exactly, Perth has amazing weather.

When I lived in Sydney I was a habitual clubber, and was always out late, a big reason I felt bored with Perth.

But with the weather, I mean if you cn't find something to do in Perth, it's you at fault, not the city.

Only boring people get bored.

I wouldn't say Claremont, bar one pretty good pub, it's dull.
Leederville has one good pub, but more lively surrounds.
Highgate is ok too.

Subiaco has a couple of options. Fremantle is a good night out, especially for a visitor.

Go there next time JF

Being a big clubber in my days, you can't avoid the scene in Sydney.

Perth's gay options are:

Connections, they camp it up a bit here, pretty sleazy. Poor man's DCM's
The Court Hotel in Beaufort St, bit like the Imperial in Newtown.
The Queens Hotel in Highgate has (had) a bit of a lavender stroip appeal to it.
The Big Apple on Thursday nights.

Flying Scotsman in Mt Hawthorn I think.

But the scene in Perth gets stale pretty quickly, same people, same events.

There's also a pub downstairs in Broadway Fair shopping centre called Stephnies. For the upmarket gay crumpet. Don't know if it's still there.

Also the Northbridge Hotel. Went there when I was about 18 for a work do. Was in the public bar and everyone was wearing short denim shorts, doc martins, white t-shirt (often with union jack on), shaved hair, and a tash. I was thinking to myself, "Hmmm, looks like a gay pub". After a while I went to go to the toilet. I opened the door that went to the lounge bar and it was like a scene out of the Blue Oyster Bar from police academy. Dudes in leathers with the ass cut out, leather police hats, handle bar moustaches etc. Instantly sought out the toilet in the public bar!

Who cares. Perth is a very small city and if you stayed in Redcliffe, only went out in Northbridge and nightlife is your only criteria for whether a city is interesting......... I love living here and although will live in other cities in my lifetime, I know I will always return to Perth. And no doubt the majority of other people would feel similar about their home cities. I grew up in a scummy part of Perth and will never live there again so can understand peoples preferences.

Anyway continue hanging ****. If you cannot enjoy what other places have to offer then it is your own problem and own fault. I just don't see why we need to jump in and defend our own territory if we are happy.

Don't know if they still do, but the Deen used to have redline night on Mondays.
