Just in response to this. The Liberal option is a band aid fix. Yes it can be upgraded at some point in the future but it will still have to be paid for and by that time will cost way more. This is the constant problem of government in this country (and probably many others) we continually look at stop gap solutions that become obsolete within years and need to be upgraded at higher cost and more inconvenience to the public. Lets just do it all in one go when its cheaper as instead of building many trenches to connect people we build one trench.

The last mile is the key, the copper is eroding and if you have storms and wet ground your ability to get a line out can be ruined. Not to mention if you live right next to a node it will cost you a lot less to upgrade compare to the a guy who lives 200 metres down the block. So you might pay $500 to be connected and he is forced to pay $5000.

We are living in a society where our internet usage and computer storage ability are increasing exponentially, the current rate we have gone over the last 20 years means by 2020 the Liberals plan will already be obsolete and it'll need to be upgraded. People argue that its just so we can download movies and music ect are only looking at the most basic premise of the internet and are not seeing that we are digital society and a digital economy, people can work from home, the elderly can get health check ups at home, our working lives will change dramatically with the ease at which we can share and move information and so and so forth.

Most people and small business' do not need faster Internet than the liberal plan would provide. Economic transactions, email, health care files etc in reality require very little data to be sent back and forth. It was stated on television recently (Q&A I think) that Netflix alone accounts for more than 30% of all data usage in the U.S so in most cases it is in deed entertainment that requires high download capability. Current estimates say The ALP roll out will cost up to 60 billion more to install ( depending on who you believe). That's a lot of money and will probably get worse. The roll out is currently missing its monthly install targets by nearly 60%.

I currently run a home office sending and receiving large files, I watch foxtel and movies all on the current cable set up with no download issues.

I see no problem with the small amount of business and private users that actually require very high speed Internet paying for the extra meterage and even having it subsidised by government where suitable. We will still be tens of billions in front.

Anyway, I'm banning myself from any further political comment on here. I'm not here for that.

Cheers

And you live in the city or rural/country area?

Maybe the country would be better off if it spent a little less money on Internet and a little more on sport development . How knows we might even end up with less drugo's , obese and willing single mothers and unemployed spending all day using the Internet .
Sure faster Internet will assist some very genuine uses however the major benefactors are going to be those listed above as the remainder of the population will need to be out working longer hours to pay for the intell upgrade .

WHen the pollies sold off Telstra they also sold off the infrastructure, any fool can tell you there is no money to be made in maintaining cabling, especially when you hold the monopoly on the product, as Telstra do and all other providers need to go through them....... Hell, there are some parts of the country that can't even get ADSL!!

Look at Victoria when the numpties sold off and carved up the Power supply........ not only do they now pay more for power, but the infrastructure is barely maintained and in some parts dangerous......... Ask the residents of Kinglake and St. Andrews how they feel about SP AUSNet....... And now QLD is considering going down the same path.

I'm neither pro Labour or Liberal, I'm more pro Australia and we seem to be ****ing ourselves over for future generations. We even allow foreign land ownership FFS!!!! Go and try buy a lot in China, Japan or Europe without citizenship or permanent resident status.
