Re: The Trade Thread

Jones is one of our better clearance players, and it's an area where we aren't great.

As I have said before, we need a game plan where we don't rely on Dal Santo, Montagna and Goddard to get scrappy clearances, but get the ball cleared to them by Jones, Polo, Hayes, Armitage and Steven so the first group can use their elite foot skills to deliver the ball into the forward line.

Re: The Trade Thread

I can't believe people want to trade Jones. He just had a ripper year. I could just picture where we would have finished if he didn't lift his game mid year. Even though his kicking isnt good, he plays his role almost better than anyone. OMG please don't trade Jones.

I wouldn't want to trade Jones either, especially considering the fact that due to his poor disposal we're probably not going to get what we deserve from trading a player like Jones.

Having said that, if the right offer came along, I wouldn't be completely shut off to the idea.

Re: The Trade Thread

I think LWP is still making a great point. Lyon has shown an incredible propensity for picking up recycleds, and for showing some bizarre choices at the draft table. With inside knowledge of this, I think we can exploit it. If we can convince him, for example, to essentially take Jones for Suban - which given some of the inexplicable choices he's made in the past, isn't out of the question - I'm not going to complain.

Re: The Trade Thread

Anyone know what the requirements are for delisting at the end of each season?

Im pretty sure there is a league requirement that 'X' amount of players be delisted from the senior list & 'Y' amount from the rookie list at the end of each season... I do not know the numbers though.

Cheers,
Rors

Re: The Trade Thread

Thanks PS. To be honest I doubt any of them will go but this is a hypothetical thread for trades so I threw it out there to get some feed back. I love Farran and Jonesy as much as the next guy and I've been one of Zac's biggest backers BUT these are the exact type of players that we can replace quickly if needed. Do I wan't to let them go? Not really but if we can get some value out of them wanting to go home (Ray) or follow Ross (Jones/Dawson) then I wouldn't be against it.

Out of the 3 Dawson is really the one we should try to hang onto because we don't have an obvious replacment. Blake will have to play on one more year and with Gwilt on the sidelines it would be a rough season to lose our fullback. Then again throwing one of Walsh/Simpkin/Archer down there, might turn up something useful. We could also look at picking up a Matty Warnock type in the draft.

Rors - The only rule with the draft is that you must take a minumum of 3 picks in the National Draft. Upgrading rookies uses one pick so for example-

St.K delist Gardiner, McQualter and Baker from the senior list. This gives us 3 picks in the draft. We upgrade Walsh to the senior list with our last pick giving us 2 "live" picks.

Eddy was cut form the rookies list and there is no cap on rookies either way from what I know. It's simply about what you can fit in the cap so we don't have to take part int he rookie draft.

I think we will end up with 4-5 "live picks in the draft, upgrade Walsh with the last pick and maybe grab a project ruckman and some raw pace (Anthony Anastasio anyone?) on the rookie list. More thoughts in the draft thread though :thumbsu:

Re: The Trade Thread

Must cut down to 35 players on the senior list (yeah that's 3 off a list of 38) and can't retain more than 3 rookies (not sure whether this includes NSW scholarship players as in Ferguson).

Really? Ouch...

We might be in for a rude shock on list lodgement day with the likes of Heyne, Smith, Polo, Gamble, Cahill, Stanley and Lynch all basically up in the air with a new coach.

Re: The Trade Thread

I agree with you LWP. You come up with some smart opinions. ]

Come on SS. You are negative about everyone’s comments but your own. You are obviously a big St Kilda supporter but you have little knowledge of the game itself. A team can not remain at the top of the ladder for years on end. You have to be able accept the fact that the Saints are at the stage where we need to rebuild. To do that, you can not hold on to everyone on our list. We have to trade / delist players and go for youth.

By the way you carry on about sh#t on this site, I can image you jumping off ship if we bottom out and barracking for someone like Collingwood.

It’s about time you have a reality check

Saints to rebuild I say. It’s the only way forward

It's no different to the way you explained it before (I was just a bit slow with my post).

We can have two veterans outside the list (say Milne and Hayes).

So the 40 players on our list become 38, and Gardi/Mini/Bakes makes up the 3 cuts already (to get to 35).

But there will surely be a few other players traded or delisted to enable the club to make the necessary inroads into the gaps in the list.

Re: The Trade Thread

Is there any truth to the rumour that Sam Fisher wants to be traded to Freo???? He is one player that we cannot afford to loose.

I dont disagree with good trades, but I'm against ditching players just to get them off the list. I dont see this as a year to launch a rebuild if the picks we end up with are 20+.

Re: The Trade Thread

I personally couldn't give a stuff how good a clearance player Jones is - he can't kick. He turns it ove way too often, and lobs most kicks in the air. Send him back to WA for someone who can hit a target. Ray is a better kick, and is a fairly important cog - but not irreplacable.

I'd like to keep Dawson, but if he goes, it's not the end of the world.

Targets from freo would be: Silvagni, Mzungu, Suban, Broughton. Unlikely for most, but I don't know their list well enough to think of many more names off the top of my head

Re: The Trade Thread

I agree, I love CJ's clearance work, but he really hurts us and himself with his disposal. Happy to trade him. Ditto for Fazzle. If Dawson wants to go - they can ahve him too. I am a fan of the cougar, but no point keeping players that want out.

Package deal could include - Faulks (former VFL F/B injured most of the year) Suban, Duffield and Roberton.

Re: The Trade Thread

The point with Jones is he shouldn't have to kick that often. Jones and Dal Santo do pretty much the same thing in clearances (different numbers), instead of one feeding it out to the other.

That is what I hope our midfield game plan is going forward. One type of player clearing the ball, and the highly skilled ones receiving it and delivering it into the forward line.

Re: The Trade Thread

This season Jones has often been behind the ball as a "bail out" option (his workrate allows him to do this and it also allows him to stay defensive side of his opponent).

His inability to kick on his right, and to dispose quickly and effectively on the left, makes him quite predictable and unsuited to that type of role - but also in stoppages (where you typically need to kick quickly and be able to use either side unless you have elite pace and/or skill).

To have Jones and Dempster on the list, and then Polo, Geary and Smith kinda seems overkill - noting Gram, Gilbert and Fisher have all done run-with roles this year too.

If we are player the loyalty card, it cuts both ways (trade a 28yo or delist a younger player).

Tough call if there is a good trade offer.

It will be a remarkable effort for him to get back out on the ground after that sickening collision late in the year..

Re: The Trade Thread

Was mentioned in the article on the coach thread.

"Dawson ... could be a good fit with changes imminent in the Dockers' line-up. Veteran defender Antoni Grover is coming to the end of his career, and former VFL defender Peter Faulks is struggling with injury."

Totally. An ordinary draft year, and low picks in it. Better to hold on to those we're still unimpressed in, rather than stick a whole new batch of unimpressive individuals in just for the sake of it.

I don't disagree with this but, I hear alot of people saying that this year isn't a strong draft and ive heard this before in other drafts that have unearthed some really good players. Its easy to say but its based on what? Alot of people say next years draft is stronger but its going to be very compromised at the top end with the mini draft this year. I don't buy into it. Thier too young to judge. We got some handy late picks last year. With our ageing list we need to pick up a few more talented kids this year and next. This year and next year are compromised so it does effect our picks in the draft but i like to wait a few years after to judge how good the quality was.

Re: The Trade Thread

I'm with you Sledge.

No problem with hanging onto these guys but getting some drafts picks wouldn't be all that bad. if we could find another Jack Steven or Jimmy Gwilt it would be huge.

Do we sell the farm? No. But if players really do want out (as is the constant rumor) then getting a late pick in the deal might be handy. Everything after about pick 30 is a raffle. The more tickets you have the better your odds.
