IMHFO there are 2 ways we can move into 2020 and beyond. The first option (and my least preferred), is as follows…..

Continue to make ridiculously high offers to Free Agents (Coniglio), and hope we snag 1.
Continue to chase this Essendon ruckman and offer a ridiculous amount of money to entice him over. But my question is why? He is coming off a knee reconstruction and he has not even played a senior game yet.
Continue to trade out our future second round pick on someone who has possibly been starved of opportunities and hope he turns into a Jack Steele.
Use our first pick (probably pick 4 overall), on someone who is already injured and pat ourselves on the back saying if he wasn’t injured he would have gone at pick 1. The fact he was injured. McCartin diabetes, Freeman hamstrings, King Knee reconstruction, Bytel back. Nothing against these kids but have any worked or are any looking like they will work?

Or

We build from the ground up. Similar to what Carlton has done. Mark my words, Carlton will be top 4 in 2021. The difference between us and Carlton is we have already got very good young talent so it won’t take as long as them.

What I would like to see is us forget about Free Agents and forget about trading in players. What I want to see is hit the Draft as hard as possible. Ask the AFL for a priority pick. If we can get one good. Even if it is at the end of round 1 that’s good to.

The only trading I would do is players that are 28 or over as at January 2020. Use them plus a pick to get a better pick back. Then take that pick to the draft.

With that in mind, the first player I want to discuss is Carlisle. He will be 28 in October and by the time we challenge he will be retired. Cash him in now. Carlisle and our fourth round pick (pick 55), for a pick under 20.

Jack Steven plus our round 4 pick (pick 76) to Geelong for their first pick (pick 19).

Go to the draft with pick 4, pick 18 (Carlisle), pick 19 (Steven), pick 20 priority pick.
The one other thing I would explore is what teams would give us for pick 4. If we could convert that into pick 10 and 17 I would take it in a flash.

Go to the draft with pick 10, 17, 18, 19 and 20.

We lose Carlisle and Steven. That doesn’t matter. They hardly played this year and even if they did we would still be crap.

Going forward the younger core of our list would be player numbers 1, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 15, 19, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28, 35. Nail draft picks 10, 17, 18, 19 and 20 and the new coach will have something to work with.

The only flaw in this strategy is that we already have too many young and inexperienced players on our list, young players needs a stable/core list of good senior players there in order to develop. Clarke and Coffield are getting bashed in the middle by much bigger and experienced bodies in their 3rd year, adding a bunch of 18 year olds is not going to work.

So If Carlisle and a Steven wants to leave, let’s trade them as you suggested. But we should definitely get some experienced midfield helped through FA/trading if possible.. then hit the draft with the remaining picks.. Brisbane got better after getting experienced players in Lyons, Neale, Mccarthy and Hodge, in his Fagan’s second year..

As long as we get this experience through Free Agency and we don't "burn" any picks I'm fine with this.

I think we need more experience, not less.

If you like at Port this year - while they have brought in a bunch of good kids, their rise has been because of Boak having a career best year, Rockcliff finding form again, Gray, Jonas, getting Dixon back these past few weeks. It is a strong bunch of guys who are 28+ to help guide the young players and support them so the young players can have the ups and downs youth brings.

The same can be said about Carlton since Teague has taken over. As well as a more attacking style of footy, they have also had Murphy suddenly find some form, Ed Curnow play some of his best ever football, Kreuzer is fit and healthy, Casboult playing his best football in a while. Another bunch of older players playing good football has helped their younger players and in turn, brought some more wins.

So you're saying if we get Coniglio this will change things? Change things enough to challenge for a flag?
We already have a very young team - back line ok , Forward line will be better with King and a winning midfield
who I want is Coniglio , Tomlinson , Goldstien = all free agents , add in a Langdon or Martin and use our first round pick on a young midfielder.
with these and improving kids will will be playing finals for a while

OMG

I think in saying that we should copy the Blues that you have failed understand that they have traded in a truckload of players in recent years.
Yeah I know but OP is for this year specifically to give the new coach lots of talent to work with. You obviously missed the point!!!!!

When our team looks like this.....
the way forward will become apparent.

Webster, Carlisle, Geary
Coffield, Battle , Savage
Clark, Steele, Billings
King, Long, Membrey
Lonie, Bruce, Parker

F: Marshall, Hannebery, Gresham

B: Paton, Hind, Bytel, hell maybe even Steven.

We did that.

Out: McEvoy, Stanley, Dal, Goddard
In: McCartin, Hugh Goddard, McKenzie, Dunstan, Acres

All the “outs” were first choice players for their teams for extended periods. Launching all your senior players for draft picks is not a guaranteed recipe for success, and in fact can have the opposite effect.
It needs to be a considered approach balancing player worth and duration against the reward. A successful team will have a combination.
Clarkson seems to have forgotten it now, but their premiership teams was high draft picks with senior bodies brought in to complement.
Hodge (1), Rough(3), Buddy (5), Lewis (7), Cyril (12), Birchell (14), Mitchell (35)

Plus, Burgoyne, Lake, Macevoy, Dew, Gibson, Guerra, Hale, Gunston.

Risky you are right one elite mid will not , but having one and getting a Martin or Langdon would strengthen our midfield tremendously and as we know it is our weak link.
Having a Conigilo or Whitfield with a fit Steven , Hannebery , Steele , Ross and Martin/Langdon we should be able to get at least 3 good fit mids on the park with Dunstan , Gresham , Hunter Clark getting a run through the middle.

Our list is starting to come of age as Marshall , Billings , Gresham have started to show and I believe our back line is heading in the right direction with the development of Battle and Wilkie this year and King who will take more time to develop but will be more than useful next year in the forward line along side of Bruce and Membery.

its almost like Santa coming to visit... every year we have not made finals for as long as i have been posting on forums, as sure as clock work out comes a poster with Nexus in their name (helen / nick) telling us how easy it is to rebuild and all we need to do is trade our senior players for bulk draft picks and tada we will be all good...

Every time we get one that's half good we seem to lose one.

Steele In. : Armitage loses the ability to play.
Hannebery in : He can't play and Neither can Steven.

If we had some good mids there would be a flow on affect right through the team, as everyone played a role they were more suited to, and the bottom level got pushed out.
If we'd had young Steve Johnson or Paul Chapman they'd be midfielders because we have to. Where is Gresham playing ?

Did you just copy & paste then make a few edits with player’s names to your post from 2008?
