I am keen on any types of red (Cab Savs, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinots, blends) in the $10-$20 range.

- Elderton cab sav or shiraz $18
- Leasingham bin 61, haven't had it for a year of two but was good from memory. $17
- Brands Laria cab merlot. $17-20
- d'Aranberg Footbold & High trellis $18-20

Whilst a very good list, you have not strayed too far from the mainstream. How about some lesser known gems?

I would say they are mainstream due to the quality of what they produce & also the fact that they typify the region well.

5-10 years ago some of the ones listed were not considered mainstream but have gained notoriety due to the above mentioned reasons.

I'll try to put a list together of some more left field wineries from main regions to look out for, but I tried to write a list of some mainstream and some smaller guys that make great wine as well.

My favourite wine at the moment that is reasonably prices is Bowen Estate Coonawarra Cab sav is really good for the price. Used to drink it 4-5 years ago but stopped & just had an 08 that was young but still really nice.

At Dan Murphy's Bowen estate is about $27.

I'm quite partial to Yering Station as a good example of a Yarra Valley Pinot Noir. Sticks also make a great one, reasonably priced too.

If someone has a recommendation for a good Clare Valley Reisling I'd be interested.

On the Pinot gisbourne estate iirc is a cracker very French, diamond valley is also extremely good if u can get from yv. Can't go past pikes for cv Riesling although Eden valley to me is slightly better.

If you like big reds try another small Victorian region the pyreness , Dalwhinne is superb but there are others.

If your looking for a cheap wine then look for these two on special at Dans or the like:

2008 St Hallett faith.

2008 d'Arenberg Footbolt, got a dozen at $11.50 (normally $17 at Dans) a bottle & can't go past it for quality vs price.

Yeah the Footbolt and Wynns Cab Shiraz Merlot (red stripe) are probably the two best pound for pound wines on a consistent basis. Always great and always cheap.

A good riesling is my personal favourite and I can't go past Clare Valley Skillogalee and Jeanneret, both wineries are next to each other, mmmmm very nice

Just had a bottle of Banrock Station: Sparkling White Shiraz (sparkling rose), got it for about $7-8 at Dan Murphys.

Awesome. Floral but not too pungent.

Anyone that likes Pinot Noir get to Dan Murphys and grab a 2010 Kooyong 'Massale' Pinot Noir. It's about $27 and it's probably one of the best value wines i've tried this year.

Living in the middle of cool climate wine country just outside of Canberra sure has its advantages.

I'm about a 2 minute walk from Shaw's winery.

Our best friend has a winery and vineyard here and whilst they dont produce a whole lot of commercial win themselves they do lease the place to 2 of the best young winemakers in the district, Alex McKay and Nick O'leary. Collector wines and Bourke Street

The 2009 Collector Marked Tree Shiraz is a great wine if you manage to get hold of a bottle....Rated very highly and i've put 1/2 dozen away for a rainy day.

Whilst I was in Perth i had a bottle of Truffle Hill Pemberton Shiraz which was a great wine also....really nice!

I can vouch for the St Hallett' Faith....Brought a box cheap online and great value.

Still love the Wirra Wirra Church Block though...

Got a new favourite shiraz now, Tar & Roses Shiraz from Heathcote. Liquid velvet. Currently going at 2 for $28 at Vintage Cellars which is way under value imo.

Another cracker I have enjoyed recently was the Mt Langhi Cliff Edge Shiraz 06. If you can get your hands on it, and my understanding is that vintage is now hard to find, it will be worth every cent you pay. I used to provide the 07 vintage on the wine list at a bar I managed, and it was fantastic, but the 06 was as good as any shiraz I have ever tasted.

I've also got my eager hands on a bottle of Mt Langhi Shiraz 1999. Very much looking forward to opening it up.

Not a table wine lover unless its sweet like Botrytis but Sav is alright too. Red, yeah not a fan, Pinot grigio and Gewurztraminer- how can they turn the sweetest grapes into horrible acid?

Sparkling on the other hand, ooo yeah!

I have a sweet SWEET tooth so adore sweeter kind. Fortunately for me I live on Tamar Ridge, so I can get cheap Tamar Ridge or Brown Brother wine, yay!

SI like go for Devils corner NV cuvee, Tamar Ridge NV Cuvee and pirie vintage sparkling are my favs! Can't miss Devils corner 9 degrees reisling, sweet but not as sweet as botrytis.

Paid my first visit to Murrumbateman recently. Picked up some nice rieslings from Helm, and some reds from Clonakilla.

Will be back in Canberra in a few weeks. Intend to see a few more of the Murrumbateman wineries. I had heard they were good, but didn't quite realise how good some were.

As I posted in another thread, my daughter is 19 and works as a junior PA in a major law firm, she wants a christmas gift for the partner that she works for and wants it to be a bit special. He's about 40 and apparently likes a cab sav. Suggestions please........
