He has all the onfield credentials to be a good captain, not too disimilar a player than Roo.

Roo came out recently and said that he'd like to captain the club for another couple of years, and he probably will.

But thank goodness we have Thompson now to develop behind him as the next captain,as there aren't too many other likely candidates around.

He looks like the man to me.

Id comment on Thompsons rise to captaincy but Im chokin' on humble pie :)
He's been sensational and would be a chance if Roo abdicated right now.

Kenny McGregor would be another with a good choice/chance when it happens.

How can we comment on Thompson other than his on field performance.

So far haven't seen any leadership qualities with his team mates?

He is an obvious choice ATS bu another 2 years could see a number of candidates emerge that do not appear obvious at this point.

I'll put two other names forward - Rutten and Mattner

Mattner is a very quiet chap from what I've heard. He may be a little too much of a Gavin Wanganeen type skipper, and we all know how that ended. Rutten definitely could be a contender. Personally I like the idea of an onballer or key forward being captain, but if there was a standout candidate playing elsewhere then so be it.

Robran and Ebert were country lads who couldn't put two words together and shy as they come - both great captains and coaches of their respective clubs.

Sport develops players making shy players more confident and outgoing - they're taught leadership skills - and you do not know who sticks their head up to lead ;)

Mattner might be quiet now and finding his feet - but picture it 2 years on - who knows thats all I'm saying.

I know it's an early call but so far he's shown himself to be a very good and consistent player who's hard at the ball and the opponent.

I agree with TopJars in that McGregor is probably the other most likely guy ATM.

Rutten is also likely to be in our leadership group one day but a guy who spends 90% of the game within 25m of the goals is rarely going to be captain, they are usually onballers.

Mattner is finally being given the opportunity under NC to show how much talent he has, we Sturt fans already knew how good he was. It's his fourth season with the club and he's only just cemented his spot in the team so I guess I never really thought about him as a future captain but if he continues to grow in confidence then anything is possible.

Footy hadn't been hi-jacked by the corporate sector back then WW. With all the off field obligations an AFL captain has these days, it really has gone past just getting out on the ground and leading by example. Witness G Wanganeen.

Thommo is the man for me.

I agree he's the front runner at this stage of the race

Out next captain for sure!

Ok who was it that put money on Thommo for the brownlow. He was $500 last week, he's into $126 now, not happy as I was about to put some on him.
