Seems to be our new whipping boy lately but IMO he has been better then what we give him credit for. He was forced to ruck against a beampole 2 weeks ago and did a good job and made Sandilands very unaccountable because he had the ability to run off and kick some goals. Last night he played as the lose man and did a fine job and didn't concede any goals to his direct opponent. He has also shown that he could go up forward and snag a few. :thumbsu:

I'm happy with Jamo at FB and Bower at CHB with Thornton as a utality doing a Maxwell type role in defence.

Thoughts?

We played a very poor team last night who's forward line had been ravaged by injuries. Did have a respectable night but as soon as we step up against a decent side they will exploit the hell out of him. When Bower comes back he's gone.

The good thing about Thornton is he is durable. Just never get's injured unlike our better defenders.

He is also flexible, having guys who can play forward or back is really useful. Also, hard to imagine giving up that much experience even if he is not playing at his best.

I do not recall Thornton turning over any of his 13 possessions and 2 marks. On the other hand I cannot recall any of his 7 kicks going more than 30 metres. True he did not cause a goal by misjudging the ball in the air or being beaten by his direct opponent. But if he played as a loose man as is suggested by C09 (was "lose" man a Freudian slip) how come he only had 13 possessions? The only way he was played "loose" that I could see was that (1) he did not seem to pick up a direct opponent; and (2) he kept on going to ground. Time (along with everyone else) seems to have caught up to him. To suggest he can play the "Maxwell" role is delusional.

Lets calm down and put things into perspective here, Thornton didn't have to play on JB last night which makes his game look respectable, there's no doubt he would have got a hiding if he were playing, he hasn't been great at all this year and his attitude towards teammates still reaks

I'm still not convinced Thornts is in our best 22 now

He was okay, not really worthy of a toast though. He didn't really have much of a forward line to defend against and I think White can easily fill that 3rd tall role when Bower returns.

White has good composure, neat skills and fits into our game plan a bit better than Thornton. His defensive skills need a bit of work but Thornton isn't much chop as a pure defender either. So what it comes down to is their ball use and zone defending. White probably edges Thornton...just.

Oh and White is so much younger and has a bright future, I'd play him next week especially if he has a good one for the ants.

Watching Jamo struggle was frightening.... who else can we depend on if that happens in finals...
Very professional player. He'll take any criticism the right way and come back better for it.

Don't underestimate the player he struggled against either, have always thought Cornelius would be a good player.

treading water a bit. not bad. i've thought for a while jamo does have some poise and he carried the ball up the ground a few times which was what thornton used to do, i think he may have even been overtaken in that regard by jamo. waite's old loose man role would seem the most apt for him.

i wouldn't call him versatile just yet... you throw any backmen forward to make up the numbers and they can kick a goal if the ball gets there. may get there in time if he's played there more often but he isn't going to put the fear of god into the opposition like adam hunter (or SOS ;) ) just yet.
