Thoughts on the Brisbane Game

I'm not worried about him upsetting anyone. That's all ancient history. But seriously, who releases a book about their career one year before they retire?

Isn't that when the demand would be highest?

I'd rather see Stevens go than Goodwin or McLeod.

Just can't see it ......if Doughty was held until 30+, then Stevens with his flexibility still continues to be required I believe for at least another couple of seasons

Do you think he's been that bad? ......what's he played 4 games since his concussion .....he had a good game Sunday

He's been ordinary since his return, but it's more of a Torney/Massie situation, if Moran, Sellar, McKernan, Talia, Otten, Davis, Young etc are going to progress, then I'd say they need to come in.

Fairly late to the topic but still ;)
Honestly i thought it was a step forward, sure the middle of the game was still pretty average but we avoided regressing to that pathetic desperate handball in the backlines gamestyle.

When we got some quick clearances (an area that still needs desperate work/better ruckmen) players like Walker started to look more dangerous. He didn't do enough over the game but he'll improve in time and start to contribute more evenly i'd hope. Tippett has similar problems at any rate, neither of them is really good enough at this stage to impose themselves on a game which doesn't really have everything going their way.

However the big thing i felt was that we were more aggressive in the midfield, took more chances etc etc The crucial thing will be maintaining that in the face of far more serious pressure from much better defensive sides. I doubt we're that far yet but if we want any hope of getting anywhere in 2011 we need to learn how to manage that.

Rielly, after the worst possible start when he gifted them a goal, was exceptional. Won so many clearances and continously got the ball foward. Excellent game.

Dangerfield was amazing, kicked 3, dished off a couple more, he's clearly got the potential to be amongst the top 5 players in the league.

Douglas played the best game of his career. He kicked 3 but his best work was done in the midfield, had so many first possessions and like Reilly, seemed to be dominant at just getting the ball forward. Really liked his game around the stoppages, needs to spend 75% of the game in the midfield.

Edwards, unfortunately, was simply terrible. He's slow, has no hurt factor in his disposals, and he seems to have lost that core strength to get around opponents. You know that as soon as he's tackled, he's gone holding the ball as he can no longer get around them. Realistically, shouldn't be in our 22 and is only in the side because Craig won't drop him.

Walker was pretty poor for 3 quarters but was the match-winner. Those two goals in the last quarter were sensational, clearly demonstrating his immense talent. There aren't too many genuine match winners in the competition, but he is one. We've got to persist with him because in 5 minutes he tore the game apart.

Gunston was relatively quiet but I thought he was extremely promising. For such a skinny kid he uses his body exceptionally well, wasn't pushed off the contest at all. Took one strong mark, almost held onto a couple more, and had that intelligent knock on to Stevens who passed to McLeod for goaled. I was over the moon to see him get that sealing goal, he deserved it and I'd give him a few more weeks in the side. Looks to have huge potential.

I liked certain parts of Petrenko and Cook's games, Petrenko had some nice delivery I50 and Cook did some nice link-work by hand which has gone unnoticed to many. Davis was a bit quiet but had some good moments in the 3rd quarter.

Bock's best game for the year, very solid game by both Rutten and Stevens. McLeod, particularly early, was outstanding. Much better team performance with many solid contributors across the board. :thumbsu:

Sellar in my opinion is the modern day version of Brett Chalmers, not tall enough for an AFL ruckman (Craig even conceded on radio that Sellar isnt a "true" ruckman) and doesnt seem mobile enough for a key position player. The jury is still well and truly out, but I think he should have shown far more than he has given the amount of time that he has been on our list (4th year).

Sellar is much faster and laterally agile than Chalmers.

Sellar is also a lot more mobile than either Rutten or Pittman ;)

At a minimum, he still holds good potential for a KPD.

I would say those 6 for sure, we are going to need one more delisting though so someone like Will Young might be in the gun if we are going to keep Goody and Macca in 2011.
What the heck?? Young made his debut seemingly earlier than most expected, has been in terrific form in the SANFL, was named in the squad of 25 this week. How the heck can you say he could be in the gun?

I thought Porps should have handballed back to Walker. The defender was fully commited to Porps and Walker would have had a free run into goal. I don't think there was another defender nearby.

Spot on. Porps is usually a very smart footballer I don't know why he didn't realise this. Got goal hungry.

One of the lucky chilled 31,000 at game. I felt we played better because Brisbane do not play a super defensive flooding game which gave us far more opportunities to go forward and not hesitate/goes sideways/backwards etc And JB was a shadow of his usual self. The Saints game will show if we have started to turn the corner or just been flattered by an average opponent. We definitely need 2 ruckmen plus Tippett to settle our forward line

I was trying to stress why we need to cut from the top of our list this year. We are going to need to delist about 6-7 players this year (2 rookie upgrades and at least 4 picks in the draft) and if we keep players from the top of our list there isnt a huge amount of fat on our list to cut.

Looking at our list there are six players that should be cut/retired Jacky, Hentschel, Burton, Doughty, Edwards and Griffin. So hypothetically if Goody and McLeod played on and we dont cut a Burton or Doughty it will then leave a player like Will Young in the gun which IMO would be a bad move.
