Didn't see one of these threads, so thought I would get the ball rolling.

Overall, I'm very, very happy with what we saw tonight. Right from the start our intensity at both the ball and the ball carrier, our willingness to run and our delivery into the forward 50 were the best it has been all season. It reminded me very much of how we played in the second half of last year, and though Essendon were hampered by injuries and inexperience, I think this game was an indication that we are not nearly as bad as the first half of our season would suggest.

Will we make the finals? Absolutely not. We will get beaten by the better teams. We're not quite there yet, but we can really use the last part of this season as a stepping stone towards next year. Getting wins on the board - and big wins like tonight - will do wonders for the younger brigade and their belief of being able to play well at this level. Combine their improvement with the return of key players and 2011 isn't nearly as gloomy as it appeared two months ago.

And boy is our forward line starting to look really threatening. Throw Knights in there and it could be something special over the next few years.

Player thoughts:

Armstrong - Not his normal disposal return (only 14), but I thought he was really solid tonight. Started shaky with some early errors but didn't let it faze him which is a real credit to a kid so inexperienced at this level. Did a good job on the dangerous Alwyn Davey and his precise kicking really hurt Essendon at times tonight. His rebound from half-back should become a key part of our drive in years to come, and I'm really happy with his development this year. He was always going to take a little while and he's come on even better than I hoped he would.

Dangerfield - I could swear that he's carrying a bit of an injury, just seems proppy at times to me, but his effort in front of goal tonight was fantastic (particularly given his misses last week). Only 11 touches - it's a bit concerning that such a talented bloke has only achieved 20 disposals in one game this season - but his ability to hurt the opposition can't be questioned. The last of his four goals was pure Dangerfield. I could've pitched a tent after that one.

Davis - Boy oh boy. His stats won't say much but gee he was good tonight. No matter where he was positioned in the contest he was always managed to get a first on it. Very rarely makes a mistake this kid and there's virtually no other player in the team that I feel more comfortable with the ball - and he's in his first year! His awareness of his teammates around him and knowing when to release the ball is a joy to watch. If he can develop both his body strength and intensity at the ball, he'll become a fantastic player for us over the next decade.

Doughty - After a great game last week, was much quieter this round. Didn't do much wrong, just didn't notice him that much.

Douglas - Overall intensity was as good as ever tonight. He fumbled a fair bit and some of his disposal was very ordinary, but 27 touches is becoming the norm for Dougy and demonstrates how much he has improved this year. Just needs to tidy up the kicks and boy is his kicking for goal average. He really needs to start nailing them and it'll hurt us in the years to come if he doesn't address this. But overall great game mate.

Goodwin - After a so-so start to the season, boy is he having a purple patch. Kicking effiency is impeccable and his drive from half-back is still such a strength of his game. 110 touches over the past month of footy.

Griffin - Started well - though would've been nice to have seen him get that goal - but his injury was the only lowlight of the night. We really need someone to replace him because bringing him into the team (and his solid performances) have allowed Kurt to play full-time at full forward. It's no coincidence that we've been kicking many more goals since Griff came back into the side.

Henderson - You'll get some dropped marks, you'll get some fumbles but you'll also get those special pieces of play that only some players can pull off. His intensity at the ball has to improve for Ricky to reach his potential, but boy is he exciting to watch. Such speed for a tall bloke and his ability to convert is surprisingly good for someone so inexperienced with the Sherrin. 3 goals was a very good return from the young man.

Jaensch - Looked lively as always but copped a heavy knock in the second quarter that virtually ended his night. Did well to come back on towards the end and get a few touches. Thought his pressure and intensity when was on was a real highlight. Seems to be aware that he has to make the most of this opportunity, but there's also a slight arrogance about him which I love. You need that in a player and we now have a few blokes like that.

Johncock - Not nearly as dominant as last week, but barely made a mistake tonight and both defensively and offensively is in fine touch at the moment.

Maric - Though he was solid without being particularly impressive. Interesting that Griff has basically become the first-choice ruckman for us now. I'd be interested to know what Craigy was saying to him on the bench, seemed a little animated.

Porplyzia - Started like a rocket and I thought it was an excellent move to start him in the guts. Allowed him to get his touch and confidence up which payed dividends over the first half. Died out as the game wore on but I thought we saw a much improved Jason Porplyzia tonight.

Reilly - As much as he tends to frustrate me, I'll have to admit that Brent is in pretty decent form right now. 22 disposals but his biggest improvement this season has been his intensity and work in close. Five years ago I never would have thought of Reilly as a hard nut but that's what he is turning into. He's becoming very good at getting the quick hands out to his quicker teammates and it's been a positive transformation of a player who really was at the crossroads. I still think he needs to hurt the opposition more - particularly on the scoreboard - but it's good to see his improvement as a player.

Rutten - Consistent and reliable as ever. Think he's had a pretty good season thus far.

Sloane - Sloaney! You have to love this kid. For a bloke with such a light frame, his intensity at the contest is second to none. Is similar to Dangerfield in the sense that he's always there first, never gives up and more often than not uses his strength and sheer willpower to extract the ball and hand off to teammates. Have been a fan of him for numerous years now and I have no doubt that he'll be a great player for this football side.

Stevens - Every week you try to look for reasons to omit Stevo out of the side but more often than not you just can't make a case for it. He looked really composed tonight and it's a credit to the bloke when considering that his recent form hasn't been overly flash. Provided some real run for us out of defence and his disposal was a lot better than it has been recently.

Symes - After a poor first outing against Hawthorn, has really brought his game back to his 2009 form. Has a real knack of finding space and I thought his ball use - his glaring weakness - was more than competent. I still think that his lack of polish can hurt too much against better teams, but I cannot fault what he has done over the past two weeks. Good stuff mate.

Thompson - Just immense. 34 disposals, 5 clearances, 8 tackles, a goal and no frees against. Along with the Freo game, his best effort for the season. It's games like this which show how important the bloke is to our side. As much as he can frustrate at times with inprecise disposal, he is the pure blue chip midfielder and gives a vital dimension to our midfield. Would really hate to see him go at the end of the season.

Tippett - Just as Tex and Danger love playing against Fremantle, this bloke relishes any game against the Dons. Keep in mind that they didn't have Fletcher, but boy was the big guy on fire tonight. Kicked them from everywhere and 6 goals is his best return of the season. Has a return of 15 goals over the past four weeks of footy which puts him nearly at an average of four goals a game. Like last year, started off slow but is really getting into some form in the second half of the season.

Van Berlo - Gee I thought he was good tonight. Attacked every contest with complete intensity, racked up the possies and actually used the ball well tonight. I thought he was rough and underdone upon coming into the side but his last two weeks have been really positive.

Vince - A fair bit quiter tonight. Didn't do much wrong when he had it but was down on his usual output. Overall though he is playing at a much higher standard and intensity than he was earlier this season, and that's the most important thing. 2010 for Bernie is all about getting those lazy aspects out of his game. 2011 should be his return to form, providing he actually has a pre-season this time around.

Walker - At quarter time I thought he was going to tear this game open. His touch in slippery conditions was superb, he was kicking goals from everywhere and he looked full of confidence. Unfortunately for Tex, Kurt ended up being the dominant forward of the game. Still, 3 goals is a solid return and his overall impact on games is beginning to become a more consistent feature. He's getting more of the ball, his intensity has lifted and over the past month has average nearly 3 goals a game which is a solid return from a kid is in second year of footy. We're still waiting for that break-out game where he decimates the opposition, but it'll come. I think we would all be pretty happy with Tex's recent output.

Nice post. I particularly agree on the comments about Stevens. Stevens has been my whipping boy since Douglas has hit some good form, but I couldn't fault his game tonight. That contest with Winderlich on the boundary line was a nice bit of play for him, he had a much quicker opponent running onto the ball with plenty of space in front of him, but Stevens pressured him nicely and put the ball out of bounds.

Davis is going to be a brilliant player for us over the next 10 years. Every week I'm more and more impressed with him. He's got so much composure for a young player and his 1-on-1 work almost cannot be faulted.

Armstrong is looking to be the perfect replacement for McLeod when he departs the club. He did a good job on Davey tonight, and how good is his disposal! I love how he judges the distance of his passes, he puts the ball a nice distance in front of his target so to allow them to run onto the end of it. He'll be a really valuable player for us in the future.

Nice write up OP. :thumbsu:

Was one of those "all played well" games where we simply dominated the opposition. The highlight for me (apart from the Danger special) was the pressure we applied to the opposition. Essendon had trouble clearing from defence and seemed to go wide all the time. On the occasions where they did get it forward, Rutten and Johncock were brilliant at shutting them down. Our zone worked very, very well and Knights didn't seem to have any answers. If only we'd played like this earlier in the season...

Overall was probably one of the most fun games I've attended. I was sitting in a bay with quite a few Essendon supporters around me and the (mostly drunken) banter going on around me was pretty entertaining.

Doughty - After a great game last week, was much quieter this round. Didn't do much wrong, just didn't notice him that much.

Took both the Davey boys out of the game in successive weeks, and did it with only half the foot speed.

Buying new laptops must be an omen for the Crows belting Essendon (bought a new one yesterday, and when I bought the old one in 2006, that was the day we belted Essendon by 139 points)!

I was confident we'd win but I did not expect to see us completely obliterate Essendon. It was pretty much one way traffic all night, bar a brief period in the third quarter. The first half in particular was sensational - opening up a 61 point lead at half time.

Can we do a Hawthorn and storm back into finals conention - unlikely but at least the side is going to give it it's best shot, and that's all I ask from them this year.

What a forward line. Once these lads get 50 -100 games up will be among the AFL's best.

Dangers last goal will be on the end of year Brownlow reel. And the reason he needs to play more in the guts.

Love the lloks of dispair on Knight's face on the big screen.

Umpirew, who cares.

Party time at three quarter time, the return of the Mexican Wave. Have been missing that feeling this year.

Oh, and Essendon scored as many goals as Germany.

Great win by the boys and its great to see our youngsters lead the charge.

Fair dinkum, Dangerfield goal was woody material!

I'm a Ultimate Stadium ticket holder but last night was with a friend in the outer and I have to say, those in the outer have stacks more passion and enjoyment than those in the members area.

Not so sure I agree with that. This is actually the first game all year where we have NOT been able to mount a case for his omission. His performances prior to last night have varied from bad to terrible to shockingly awful.

That said, he was very, very good last night. His best game of the season by so far it's not funny - I'd give him an 8.5 out of 10, his first game of the year in which I would give him better than a 3.

Loved his run through the centre just before 3/4 time, which led to a Dangermouse goal. Also loved some of his work in defence.

The only mistake he made was the deliberate out of bounds, but even that could have gone either way. The ABC commentary team were flabbergasted that the umpires chose to pay it.

Just a couple of little things that summed up the night:

- Philthy Davis' smile after smothering a kick - priceless :D
- Jaensch and his little tongue thing going on before kicking

Stevens was one of our best I thought. Nothing passed him, he was the Stevo of old. Good time to lift as if he kept up the shit he has served over this season he'd probably be shown the door. Our forwards were amazing. Tip, Tex, Danger, Henderson- all ripped Essendon a new one. All of them will be special/are special. Hendo is still so raw, he still stuffs up some of the basics but his movement is immense. Moves so well around the ground, I think he'd be the perfect player playing the lead up type role like Ryan O'keefe. Tex is just a natural. He was just so clean, stood out from everyone else. Tip just loves playing Essendon- after such a dissapointing start he's starting to hit his straps. Will come close to his goal tally last year. And last of all danger. The guy is a BEAST. That last goal was seriously Judd like. Once his tank gets bigger (next year) he will be unstoppable.

Only disappointing moment for Stevo in this game was being completely out marked by Sam Lonergan of all people 20 out in front of their goal, apart from that he was excellent.

I'd still be dropping Stevo though. One good performance in a rout doesn't make up for a string of poor ones when you're a working class footballer. If Bock's fit, Stevens out.

I'm sure that if Stevens plays a good game 2 weeks from now, it'll also be the first good game he's played in a terrible season, right?

I thought Stevens was great tonight (credit where credits due) but i would really like to see him playing that well when things aren't going his way (aka not in a thrashing) because thats where he struggles. I would only drop him this week if Bock is 100%, but he might survive still because of Griffin's injury.

Thought Doughty towelled up Davey, but gave away a few silly free kicks.

Van Berlo was huge for us, needs to be that consistent to be captain.

Thompson was great, all of the forwards were good.

Jaensch couldn't get into the game, i would've given him a run on the wing if he was struggling.

Tippett was good, if our midfield fires, he dominates, if not he still gets his 2-3 which is still exceptional considering.

Walker great first half, didn't do much in the second, but still had intensity and presence.

Porplyzia will be good for the run, good first half.

Armstrong was good had the 14 touches or so, used it well, but fell over a bit and got pushed off it. A while ago i thought he would be a bit like Krakeour from Port who only plays well when things are going his way, but Armstrongs performed well in losses, and has class, just needs more KG's and well have a player.

Interesting selection in the next month, we could possibly win our next 4 to be 9-9 then it will be interesting, but i'm just hoping for more games like that and some development. I hope we don't rush players back for the sake of finals unless their form demands it with the exception of Bock.

over the next few weeks Mackay, Bock to come back in for Stevens and maybe Armstrong.

Not at all. In all his previous games this year he's been a disaster looking for somewhere to happen. Last night he was exceptionally good, almost the diametric opposite of his previous performances.

Credit where it's due and brickbats where they're due. He deserves all the credit he gets for last night's performance.

Great read Bockchoy :thumbsu:

The game was eerily similar to the 2009 elimination final against Essendon, mexican wave and all. Good to see 37k there, although was hoping for 40+, the crowd made up for it in noise. The Essendon blokes sitting near us in members left for the pub after the first quarter, probably was for the best.

Danger's run and goal in the last quarter was obvious one of the biggest highlights, SCHWIIINNNNG is all I can say from that play. Beating a dead horse here, but that kid is going to be an absolute star for us, it's scary what he's doing at only 20 years old.

Thompson - BOG by a mile for me, pure class and provides so much run in rebounding from the back. Of all the coming out of contract players, he's the one that I cannot bear to see leave. If need be, heaven and earth must be moved to keep him here. That said, 99.9991% sure he'll stay.

Goodwin - Even his pie floater kicks are accurate! Talk about retiring in form.

It's been covered by a number of people, both here and in the media, but the current forward pressure is outstanding, Walker has lifted his defensive pressure massively, 3 goals + several goal assists, well done!

Sloane's continuous takes on the ball and never give up attitude is amazing for a such a young player. I'm shocked to come home and see his disposals so low, seemed to be everywhere the ball was. Deserves to wear the number 9.

Tippet's curving shot off the side of the boot in the third quarter was his best out of the six. Good footy brain as well with the taps off the ball from on the ground to open players. Doubters and cynical douchenozzles claiming he is a waste of money have certainly gone quiet of late, glad he's proving them wrong and is on the way to beating his tally from last year.

There were so many other positives from so many players last night but I'm stuffed, it has been a very long but enjoyable weekend.

And people say that the cheer squad don't do anything :p. Took us about 10 cracks at it before the rest of the crowd got involved but we got it up :thumbsu:

someone's paying attention :D

I can't tell if you're agreeing with me or not, so I'm just going to say Stevens has been in our best 3 times, serviceable 2 times, poor 4 times and unconscious 1 time in his 10 games for the season. Not even close to the "disaster waiting to happen" every week, Vader.

On pure form if you compare defenders, Bock has been a lost worse than Stevens in the games he's played.

I would actually concede Bock to the GC.

Me too:D give him the captaincy now!!

Having said that, vB has now actually strung together 2 very good games; perhaps the gauntlet has been thrown down by Craigy during the mid season break... "Show me how bad you want to be captain".

Hendo, Sloane and Walkers games were great and it was nice to see the Porps back to form in the first quarter -keep going son.

Hard to disagree with any of that. And when Bock has been on the park this season, it isn't like he has been much better, as smoovy just said above. He is well entrenched in our best 22, even 18, at the moment.
