A fortnight ago Brent was a healthy teenager studying for his VCE and buoyant after meeting a new girlfriend.
Within days he was close to death after being hit with what doctors believe may be a viral infection that has weakened his heart.
His father Damian, who kicked the sealing goal in the 1990 Grand Final, said he and partner Trudi could not believe how quickly Brent had been hit.
"At first they thought it was gastro. He couldn't hold his food down and he felt really tired, so we took him to the doctors and they sent us off to the Austin Hospital, but he went downhill pretty quickly," Monkhorst said.
"He is sedated and has been in a coma since last Friday (week) and it's a matter of when he's able to be woken up.
I think they should have like a minute silence or something prestigious for him in tonights game what are you're thoughts.
I felt everyone needed to know.
Edit: change 'u' to 'o' Monkhorst
