Degrees in stats (which I have) is one thing. Getting personal with no relevance is another. If I was a truck driver with a degree in stats, it wouldn't make my opinion any less valid than if I was an accountant with a degree in stats. Diego staretd getting personal a long, long time ago.

Would a truck drivers (in your opinion) opinion be less relevant without a degree in stats?

What you are doing is bringing your personal life into the equation by claiming a degree in stats makes your opinion more valuable.

Have a look at American bulletin boards, it is always a crack up, one I belong to seems to always go along the lines of,

I know about the golf swing because I have a degree in physics
I know more because I've been off scratch since 15
I know more because my dad was a teaching pro
I know more because I read all I can on the subject
I know more because my college won the NCAA title
I know more because my home town is home of the big golf ball
Being an analytical type, I know that I know more
I know more because Florida weather is better for golf
I know more because when it snows I read all I can, practise for 6 months and then read some more.
I'd know more if I could remember what the topic was about.

A person's degree in statistics certainly has more relevance than their occupation. I agree it probably isn't that relevant (a person might just have an excellent general knowledge), but it's a guide to show that the person has some taught knowledge of the subject matter.

The point was that Dave brought up my current job, which has absolutely no relevance at all. Jobs, families, finances etc are personal. I don't talke about other peoples jobs, finances or families - they shouldn't talk about mine.

They can if they want. I can't stop them. But it just shows their paranoia by necessitating to divert the topic from the subject matter.

Considering cheating and plagaraism by undergraduates and postgraduates is at disturbingly high levels, people with degrees may not necessarily have any knowledge of the subject matter.

However in my opinion it was quite clear that Dan's reference to Shinners and Diego sleeping together was in fact only meant to imply that they agree an awful lot.
