I invite you all to re-structure our forward line.

Losing Tex needs to be looked at constructively. Mind the ridiculously huge crater caused by his absence, and come up with something to loosen up our previously one-dimensional structure. Put in as much detail as you want. I'll go first:

Porplyzia Johnston McKernan
Jaensch Jenkins Lyons

My wildcard is Porplyzia. Porps is a natural forward. He kicks goals, knows how to lead and takes grabs. Get him in there, and leave him. He is sorely in need of some confidence, maybe a bit of purpose. He's no mid fielder, or half back. He's a goal kicker and we all feel comfortable if he's lining up. I'd love for Sando to pull him aside and say: "Ok mate, here's your chance to respond."

I'm genuinely interested in how people would react in Sando's shoes, given the tools we have available. I think losing Tex suddenly makes us unpredictable - something we've been the exact opposite of until now. I watch with great interest to see how we respond here - it will speak volumes for the thinking ability of our coaches. Can they use as a positive to turn our season around, or do we just roll over because the big fella is done and dusted for a while?

Someone like Henderson could also be used as that third tall forward who has been decent at times.

Whilst many of us would like to see Petrenko played in the backline (or sent to the SANFL) I believe he'll probably be in the forward line instead of Lyons.

I do wonder whether Kerridge would be capable of filling that role when Van Berlo comes into the side. He's shown he's capable of laying tackles which is what Petrenko does (although I doubt he has the speed) and could possibly be a little better offensively then Petrenko?

Really do need a small quick who can chase down the defenders with a good tackle that is also capable of crumbing and kicking goals...

In another thread I had the following IIRC:

FF: Jaensch - Johnston - McKernan
HF: Douglas - Jenkins - Vince
  • Jaensch showed enough last week to warrant some proper time up forward to see if he can repeat the dose
  • Johnston has earned a spot with 1.5 years of solid SANFL form to be full-forward and give us a strong leading target.
  • McKernan provides a marking target deep in the 50 (complement Johnston leading) and to provide 2nd ruck support for Jacobs (say 30% of the time)
  • Douglas is basically a mid-fielder
  • Jenkins has played reasonably well so far this season and shown glimpses - but mainly when playing forward. Now with McKernan also in the team Jenkins can focus purely on being a forward and give us a strong target ranging up and down the ground.
  • Vince plays the high half forward role to provide good delivery to the forwards and hopefully pot a couple from long distance with his strong leg.
I think the game has passed Porplyzia by sadly; Petrenko has run out of chances; although the clock is ticking on Callinan I could see him in the FP with Jaensch moving out to HFF if either Douglas or Vince pushed up into the midfield. It doesn't scream out that it will provide huge pressure on the defence when rebounding out but hopefully it's got a few options and will be more likely to kick a winning score.

I do want to see Porps planted forward, he's a little down now but like last year needs a few games in a row to find form and then he's dangerous, plus he keeps the ball in our F50, lessening the need for a purely defensive forward like Pets. He's also a cool head who plays better than those around him under pressure, like he did when he came on against Brisbane, and we could have used him in F50 during the last quarter on Saturday. The way our rucks are going at the moment, McKernan should also come in so we have another option - if Jacobs had gone down on Saturday we would have been shot, because JJ would have needed to ruck and that would have robbed us of our last remaining key forward.

If Callinan isn't coming back into the side, then Jaensch should have another month up forward, with Tambling coming into replace him down back. Still can't understand how Pigdog Riley isn't in the team given our woeful tackling pressure, and Lyons is screaming out for a run in Crouch and VB's absence.

There's no point having depth if you never use it, and your depth should never unknown when you hit an injury crisis, it should always have been tested with 2 or 3 games to that point. That way you have a better idea of how it will perform, who it can replace, and it's better prepared to make an impact when needed - which may well be a final. Otherwise you end up throwing debutants in en-masse, and it weakens your side.

HF: Jenkins Johnston Porplyzia
FF: Jaensch McKernan Lynch

McKernan to shine without Tip & Tex. Gets free reign to go where he wants to go. Jenkins with a bit of pressure off will help. He's still pretty raw. He'll get there though.

My theory is that McKernan $hits himself when he goes to mark a sitter right in front because he know how important it is. Even when he grabs it, he usually misses. I'd like to see him more at CHF like Tippett played for us last year, where he could take more ruck contests and relieve Jacobs. Now Tex is out, our gameplan needs a forward who leads down the ground to open up space, and I think he's a better one on one mark than a pack contest in the F50. You're right about Vince, he could be a dangerous option up forward and it might get him interested again because he loves a sausage roll, plus he's a great deliverer of the ball into the F50, and draws his fair share of free kicks.

Agreed. He was one I'd have rotating off HFF.

I thought he was ok on the weekend. Haven't read every post-game comment but I assume most seem to think he did enough to warrant his recall. Was copping huge heat on here before the game.

HF: Otten Jenkins Danger (if getting tagged or knee playing up)
FF: Jaensch McKernan Lynch

Vince was good on the weekend. However this is typical of Bernie. He plays one good game but won't repeat that form for another 6 rounds. Until he starts performing consistently, there will always be people calling for his head.

With all due respect, that is possibly the worst AFL forward line I have ever seen including the Bulldogs.

I'm gonna put Johnston in for Walker. Wherever we would of played walker, depending on the opposition, the ground and conditions, is where Johnston plays.

Hopefully the guy takes his opportunity like Modra did when Hodges got injured and not sit back and enjoy the free ride as players have been known to. Evidently posters here say he's that sought of person. They thought Modra was similar type as well..

I would give Johnson the nod in filling Walkers spot.
Keep the same structure.
At least one of Callinan or Porps must come in.

Three option I have thought of.

"Like for Like"

Lynch Jenkins Douglas
Jeanch Johnston Pets

"Potentially fix two issues (Tex out and Sauce loss of form)"

Lynch Jenkins Douglas
Jeanch Jacobs/McKernan Pets

"My most creative workable solution"

Lynch Jenkins Douglas
Johncock Rutten Pets

Ok I'll have a crack:

HF: Lynch Jenkins Douglas / Dangerfield
F: Porplyzia McKernan Jaensch

No I don't like McKernan much, but its clearly going to happen. Let's try to embrace it.

Jaensch IMO has the potential to be a 30-40 goal forward. He is clearly more at home up there than down back. Time to make it permanent. At least he has been forced to work on his defensive skills down there which may assist in locking the ball in the 50 which has become a major issue for us.

Porps has been out of form and clearly isn't a happy chappy, but chuck him back in and let the others worry about the tackling. He is an elite kick and smart operator.

Douggie has been in career-best form early on this year, and he is a lock for a role rotating between a HF flank and the midfield. Dangerfield would be the main guy I would switch him with.

Jenkins is now a permanent CHF who doesn't ruck in this model. Smack can share that with Sauce.

Lynch takes the other flank for now. He and Porps need to be on notice because LJ or Callinan will be straight in if they falter.

Off topic, but my model here also involves dropping Brent Reilly. His game last weekend brought bile to my mouth and he should serve a club-imposed 6 week ban as a direct consequence.

Would work much better as a full-back line.

Wright as the defensive flank.
Jenkins as roaming CHF
Lynch as the lead up player
2 resting mids in the pockets.
Smack at FF and in the ruck.

Without Tex I think Smack gets the nod. We aren't going to adequately replace him. So might as well strengthen somewhere else. IE the Ruck

Poor Sando. First he was sabotaged by an incompetent AFC administration, now his best forward goes down with a season ending knee injury. Worse still is we'll get no decent draft picks when we inevitably fall outside the 8 this year. This is a disaster.

Yeah its bad.

But Sando still has a job to do. I doubt he's shedding tears. I hope he's not - then we'd be f-cked.
