There's a guy called Tom Hawkins who looks like terrorising us in years to come. Watching him v's Coburg on the weekend and cannot believe how big this kid really is.

Luke McGuane seemed to have him covered pretty well at Coburg when we played Geelong recently. Towelled him up and Luke's no heavyweight.

I think that's what clinched the nomination for him. He showed throughout the season he was a good stopper, but in those last couple of games he started to provide some run out of the backline and set up some plays. Although Thursfield may have thought the last game was one of his worse games, it was in many ways also one of his most promising games because of those extra things he was starting to show.

I remember standing at a couple of the huddles when Geischen was coaching the ressies. He was continually telling Andy Kellaway that although he was a good stopper it wasn't enough. He had to run, make position and demand the footy. Kellaway tried his best to follow the instructions - but he looked so frightened about leaving his man. It was like going in to the water at the beach in witner - you just take a deep breath, shut your eyes and charge and hope its over quickly.

But it worked. Eventually Kellaway learnt and became an All-Aus defender. Maybe never the best kick but not nearly as bad as the reputation (always confused with his brother). And by the end was a hard running defender (which is also often forgotten).

I don't know if David King is a a good, bad or indifferent coach. But you'd guess of all the blokes to teach a young fella about when to charge and when to stay at home he'd know close to the most. Built his career around it. Whole lot of David King about the way Jake goes about his game.

funny you mention that, hearing Foley speak he was quite effusive about Kings influence on his revitalised form. My memory of David King was that customary dash out of a stoppage that become his trademark. Sound familiar when watching axel play:rolleyes:
