Agree. Richmond still posses the most frightened group of midfielders in the comp. Their superstars forward and back save them. To say they can win the flag is crazy talk.

Grabbed this from another post. Any truth in this? Theyll be tested this week! :D

Yet again proven to be a complete crock of sh*t. Adelaide packed players around the ball, expecting to win a tough, in tight midfield battle without realising that this plays right into our hands.

If they had chosen to study our form properly they would note that Carlton also employ the same game plan and always lose to us. We do have players capable in tight and are prepared to grind the encounters out.

We it fails for the opposition is that we do have one of the best fleets of outside runners in the comp. With so many players stacked around the ball, when it does come out we have our quick players with unusual amounts of space which enables the ball to be pushed down to our dominant forward line on favourable terms.

Carlton are our bitches and if Adelaide keep this up, so will they!

hey CJH...I still have last years preliminary b/w us and the lions at the Gabba ( and the Essendon final )burned into my memory.

Q. 1 :- Can we mix it this time around ?
Q.2 :- Will Spud stick with the kids through the H and A season....krakeour must be in our best 18 now ?

Agree on Carlton ...we bitch slap them and call 'em Susan.

it would be nice to win the Wizard cup wouldn't it ? :)

Carlton Richmond's bitches? Yeah, you beat us twice last year but what happened the year before (51 and 73 pt losses). You can't count the Harry Potter cup if that's what you are doing.

:p :p :p :p

I put absolutely no stock in the results of the Wizard Cup matches as sides rarely line up in their best configurations!

As for Carlton, well we have outplayed you at your own game on the last two occasions with exactly the same game plan. Carlton better come up with something different else it will be number 3.

With no Koutofides or Silvagni means that task will be so much harder!

And finally, if I so choose to call Carlton our bitch on my board, I will do so! :p :D

LOL! I didn't even know this was your board - I did a search for my name in posts (to take me to the posts that I had previously participated in) and my name came up in this one. Turns out Topjars had taken something out of a thread from the main board (still doesn't mean you can call us your bitches, even on your own board;) )

Yes, we need to come up with something different next time. The two Carlton v Richmond matches last year were weird to say the least. Surprisingly, we did exactly what we had to do in both with regards to the tall timber (Ottens and Richo weren't the reason you won either game) but lost it by giving your running players a picnic. Sh*tful disposal on our behalf didn't help matters but that's nothing new. I think a totally new approach will do us good. Who knows what that is, I'll leave it up to Britts :D

I don't think one win in a Wizard Cup match makes us your bitches.....take a look at past results in premiership matches...

In our match last year at the MCG I think we played a similar, tight, close in game, and managed to kick 9 straight in the third quarter on the way to a 28 point win. We got the first kick out of the pack and burst out into our running game. Roo had Bowden and Tivendale running scared. There's nothing wrong with this gameplan against the Tigers, we simply didn't execute well enough and the Tigers made some nice adjustments, as well as performing to a higher level. More often than not, it was the Tiges who got that first kick out too.

Ant, I must point out that that was our most pathetic performance for the year. That was the game that I stormed out of the ground in such a rage that I left my laptop lying under my seat!

Also, I did not say that Adelaide are our bitches - well, not yet anyway! It is, however, my observation that if you do persist with that gameplan you will be - last years result not withstanding!

CJH, what about the season before last year, was that another aberration??

Quite simply, your performance against us in Round 9 was poor, as was ours last Friday night, it was most disappointing.

I'd back my boys to beat your guys anytime with the very same gameplan we employed last Friday. It's the same way we generally play our footy and has been reasonably successful in the past against the Tigers and other clubs. You were too good a few days ago but our loss had more to do with your performance (Ottens and Richo superb) than any mistake in our gameplan.

I guess we'll find out in Round 6 (??) :)

...

The season before last? ... at Colonial Stadium? I think you won that by 9 points from memory? It was tough and tight for the whole game... you got a break of a few goals... we clawed it back, would have gone about 8 points up ourselve if Dragacevic would have kicked a gimme... he missed and you got a few kick goals to get you nose in front at the end.

I think those are the only wins you've had against us since that fateful day in 1997 where you thumped us by 130+ points which earnt Robert Walls the sack!

With your current game plan, ant, you will always struggle to beat us! Why?

By crowding numbers around the ball, you are attempting to use the might of your most exceptional midfield unit - and it is is a very good one.

The problem though is that the job of the midfield is to ultimately kick the ball down to the forwards and, quite frankly, you don't have a forward line.

Now, you could mount a case about Fitzgerald coming back in but he has been around football for a long time without showing much and at any rate, we could also point out that we were missing Gaspar and Holland and were playing our B-team defence!

Watching the game again - I've got Foxtel and have seen it replayed 3 times now :D - I noted that statistically, both sides went forward approximately the same times (Inside 50's - very important stat) which means that the respective midfields roughly broke even.

The difference is that we had no end of targets to aim at up forward while you had at best Daniel Schell who struggle once Vardy picked him up.

What does it matter that it was a tight game?? If I recall, and as you pointed out, we lead by about 4 goals early in the last quarter of that 2000 game, you hit back to take the lead before we kicked the last couple for the win.

You could also say that your win in 99 or 98 at Footy Park were tight, close contests, I think 19 and 9 points were the margins. Would you say you struggled to beat us on those 2 occasions with this fantastic game plan of yours??

I'd say overall, that it's relatively even over the past 4 years, and nothing has shown me that this gameplan we employed against Richmond was the cause of our downfall. You can't take too much out of a preseason game when we've beaten you the last two times we've played you in the Premiership season. One loss in the Wizard Cup and all of a sudden it's our gameplan against the Tigers that is at fault?? Then why we have beaten you in recent times in Melbourne?? The same could be easily said of the Tigers I presume....but of course, you won last Friday night ;)

I understand what you're saying, but it's the gameplan we regularly employ, though not to great effect last week. Frankly, if anything, the problem is not our gameplan, but our forward line, as you noted. But by packing the midfield, we usually get the first kick away, and get the ball quickly into our forward line, and from there we use skill to get it through the big sticks. It didn't work quite as well because you got more than your fair share of ball and you used it better. Plus you had Richo and Ottens. We did not. On a better night, I can see us getting a greater degree of control through the midfield, with our gameplan in place, and starving your forwards of opportunity. This did not occur last Friday because your team played VERY WELL!! Our gameplan had nothing to do with it :)
