From: Ballarat/Sturt
Number: 15 1912

The 6'6" forward was the biggest player of his era. Lane was described as a "high mark" and "powerful kickist" upon his recruitment, but he only played one season with the club.

Cleared to Carlton

in early 1913 he never played a match for them.

Described as an Ex-Brightonian

before moving to Adelaide in some sources. Also known as W.Lane in contemporary Football Records

He doesn't get a mention here either as having played senior football for Sturt:- http://www.sturtfc.com.au/history/sturt-the-numbers

From the 1912 Round 1 Football Record:- Much is expected by Melbourne barrackers from W. Lane. He hails from Ballarat and Adelaide, and is a very fine high mark and powerful kickist. Lane is over 6 ft. in height, and is equipped with a fine turn of pace. He can turn quickly, so here is a contradiction of the saying, " It's a long lane that has no turning."

I think he was West Adelaide not Sturt
I think you're right! He's the big bloke on the third row ( https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:1911_West_Adelaide_Championship_of_Australia_team.jpg ):-

This says T Lane of Ballarat would be playing with West Adelaide that season (as he was living in the area).

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/45193421 (Barrier Miner, 10 May 1912):-

A few seasons ago a Ballarat team visited Broken Hill. A conspicuous figure in the ranks of the visitors was a tall sturdy player named Lane, who was recruited from tho South Yarra club, a junior team in Melbourne. Lane, who gives his height as 6ft. 6in. now plays on the forward line for the Melbourne team in the Victorian league.
