As a pies supporter who has been to 18 games during the year, but won't be able to make it to next week's Granny, I was wondering what you all thought about the past season and your special highlights.
A have done a little review.
Despite what happens on Saturday, it has been a great year for watching the Pies play!! Here goes...
1 v Richmond.
A shaky start, but a hard fought win without Cloke, Burns and Lica all out suspended from the finals. If Richo had've kicked at least half of the one's he missed we may not have been so lucky. Woey started very well.
2 v Carlton.
A similar game to the Richmond one. Bloos had a bit of spirit early in the season, but we held them off to win by a few goals, wasn't easy viewing.
3 v Geelong.
Was working this day but got home in time to see the final quarter onslaught. apparently not brilliant viewing up until 3/4 time. Big blow when Tarks went down. The geelong monkey was finally off our backs.
4 v Brisbane.
We were perhaps a little flattered by the result with a few consolation goals late, but the effort was there and the pies gave the sellout away game gift to brisbane, the first of many for 03.
5 v Essendon.
Wasn't there. just as well.
6 v Sydney.
It wouldn't have been so bad if it wasn't for that little ****hole Jelena Davis kicking the sealer and giving it to the crowd when he had played a shocking game all night. The form of Buckley was looking ominous though.
7 v Adelaide.
Where do you start? Was there a better time or place for Taz to deliver?? The gutsiest win for the year purely because we had lost the previous three and the guys never threw in the towel despite several matchwinning leads from the camry crows. My heart sank at the point that was kicked by them late in the quarter to put them in front, but bux and taz combined to make it a memorable night for all concerned. (especially the home crowd)
8 v Weagles.
The game we should never have lost. had we won, it would have been the game we should never have won. the wierdest game I've been to (from what I could see, the bloody roof at telstra should be welded shut IMO!!) ten minutes at the start of the game and 10 mins at the end, and the game was theirs.
9 v St.K
The now annual flogging of the saints went to shedule. The best part was if you squinted, it looked like we were beating Richmond again!!!
10 v Port.
The loss was a bitter pill to swallow, but hindsight is great. it wasn't a finals game so it doesn't matter any more. Should've played a few mind games.
11 v Melb.
Was in party mode very early on in this one. Usually I stress even when the lead is more than sufficient but Melbourne were truly terrible on this day. Joffa drew his biggest response for the year from the Melbourne faithful. Priceless!
12 v Hawthorn.
They must've been thinking about Darwin. six goals was a horrible return and Joel Smith booked his spot in the AA team based on a matchwinning performance on Tarrant. The break could'nt come quick enough for the pies, who had a challenge to make the 8 at 6-6.
13 v Doggies.
This one was put to bed rather early. though they did have a bit of bite in the second half. Dogs were just happy to see so many people, and dollars. now they can afford cheese for the mousetraps.
14 v North.
Who would've though the biggest crowd at TD would be for a North home game? We did right by them by filling the joint, they did right by us by playing like sheizen.
15 v Freo.
The best atmosphere for the team entering the arena I've ever seen. Doesn't the pies song sound even better than usual when it's played after some peice of crap like the Freo song? One of the best leadership displays I've ever seen from Buckley. His takle on Carr was the highlight. They did it for bobby alright. I was beside the race for this game, and Ed's eyes were red and puffy, I reckon inspired by whatever had preceeded in the rooms beforehand, apparently a tribute to bobby. A special day.
16 v Richmond.
Poor, poor tigers. was one of those games where it was hard to judge how good we were against how bad they were. A thrashing, nevertheless.
17 v Carlton.
A very different Carlton side to the one from round two. Also a very different Collingwood side. five thrashings in five weeks and all of a sudden our percentage was no longer an issue. Even being crapped on by a gull in the last quarter did'nt bother me in what is as close to heaven as a pie fan can be. Kouta's assist to Tarrant one of the best moments of the day.
18 v Geelong.
After some big wins we were perhaps a little spoilt and to their credit the cats were on the ball early. they boys looked set after 1/2 time though and I got to see my first MOTY live. Onya tazza!
19 v Brisbane.
similar to the WC game, just blown apart early and were never able to recover. I blame the jumpers. if we hadn't have added the extra stripe we would've lost by more.
20 v Adelaide.
The most annoying supporter in the world was behind me for this one but fortunatley I only had to put up with hime for the first half. Got to this game way too bloody early to get in with my season's ticket only to find empty seats everywhere by the bounce of the ball. How people were turned away I'll never know.
21 v Sydney.
If it wasn't bad (or good?) enough having nearly the entire football world against us the time keepers decided to join the party. Don't think we didn't notice either. I was screaming at the telly as the clock stood frozen. But I needed not have worried. 3 goals in a hit and run mission. also the day I was introduced to the BigFooty forum. a nice little oulet!!
22 v Essendon.
This was the first time I've seen us beat the bombers live. It's been tough because these are the only Melbourne games nowdays where the crowd is basically 50-50. A great game, with two great leaders. And plenty of goodbyes to the Essendon cheersquad members who made their way past my seat in the final quarter.
QF v Brisbane.
A more tense game I don't know if I've ever seen. A good effort to get the Brissy monkey off the back after a few losses. The boys kept well in check though afterwards.
PF v Port.
Sunny day, a brand new stand to sit in, plenty of noise and plenty of pies goals to feast on. The port supporters had nowhere to go cos they were all on buses, and they had to sit there and watch. A wonderful tactic by Williams to put pressure on the pies by discussing his own failings at the club. Keep it up Choke-oh!!
So there it is, my first year as a pies member. Not bad value at all especially as it was a christmas gift. The gift that kept on giving! After wondering if I'd make it to enough games I ended up seeing 16 H & A games and our two home finals. I reckon I'll be back
And there is still a game to go. We all know that nothing but 100 percent will be given on Saturday, and our prospects could'nt be in better hands than Mick, Nathan and the team.
GO MAGGIES do it for BOBBY.
