Do you think there should be zoning for clubs to pick up priority picks in the draft? The onus would be on clubs to link more with the grassroots. It would encourage more talented kids to choose AFL footy in Qld and Sydney, bolster sense of local loyalty like in the old days.
Zoning could be:
Lions - Qld and PNG
Swans - Sydney and NSW north of Goulbourn
Kangaroos - North Melbourne and Canberra
Geelong - its area
West Coast and Freo - WA
Port and Adelaide - SA
Hawthorn - its area of Melbourne plus northern Tassie
Collingwood, Carlton, Essendon, Bulldogs, Demons, St Kilda, Richmond: - areas of Melbourne plus traditional plus apportion extra areas of country Victoria plus NSW south of Goulbourn, plus southern Tassie, plus Northern Territory.
Over time other countries (see World Footy Census on www.afl.com.au - Game Development - International leagues page) can come on line.
This would only be for 1 (possibly 2 later if works well) pick. Rest go into normal draft (apart from Father-son rule). Rookie draft also remains.
