I'm not Elle McPherson but I've never had an issue approaching guys. You just need to appear confident. If you walk up and you're a nervous, stammering mess they're going to think you're a weirdo.

It must be easier and harder being female. Its really not expected, though not as rare as it used to be.
I always felt I was intruding on the woman's time, and had no chance, so very rarely bothered. When I did, stammering, nervous wreck was usually the result. Being as ugly as a politician's less good looking brother after a bad car crash didn't help much either.
These days, I'm past it anyway.

If I thought I was half a chance, or had admired from afar for so long I was into puppy dog mode I was woefully inept. Stutter, stammer, too quiet to be heard, couldn't look into eyes - it was just sad. For me, it had to be instinctual, first (or even better no) thought approaches.

Amazing how much 'success' I had with simply ignoring the hottest/leader of any group girls and approaching the 2nd/3rd. At least half the time the hottest would then chase you, 'stealing' from the original target if they could.

Though my experiences are now closing on 15 years ago , I found girls would often actively interfere with their friends interactions, whereas mates would wingman if they could - even if their "help" ranged from hilarious to disastrous.

(Edit: Tinder thread - thought this was AFS). Never used the online dating thing - but from other stories in this thread, I think I would struggle now if I had to, as apart from that late teens window of opportunity, my intimate relations where almost exclusively progressions from friendship or extended social relationships - where I had already established who I was prior to any romantic/physical interactions.
