Definitely tickling if any of the people who think its tinkling like to place a bet Im a bit short of cash at the moment.

Well I always was under the impression that it was TINKLING the ivories as in the sound of the keys on the piano hitting when they were pressed down (particularly the high end sounding keys) but if tickling floats your boat then more power to ya!!

Actually they are both kind of right, if you do a search for "tickling the ivories" it comes up with some sites, one of which is about Deep Purple muscian "tickling the ivories".
When you do a search for "tinkling" it mentions on one site about hearing the tinkling sound of the ivories.
When people talk about playing the piano, they usually say they are "tickling the ivories" & I learnt the piano too, so I know.

Tinkling, as mantis said, is most often used when talking about the sounds of the piano ie; "i heard someone tinkling on the piano/tinkling the piano keys'.
When it is someone actually playing "He/She/They were tickling the ivories".

tickling has nothing to do with music whatsoever. You can't tickle keys. You tinkle with them which makes them sound.
And as I said I WOULD and DO know!!! For a fact!

Saw this on here yesterday. I took the liberty of e-mailing an internationally recognized authority on the subject - none other than Burt Bacharach. I got a quick response too. Here's what it said,
"Dear Mr. Burt Sux,
I am not Burt Bacharach. I own and maintain a web site dedicated to this talented songwriter and musician. I'm sorry if you and those who are interested in Austrialian /sic/ football fail to appreciate those talents. Many more people on the planet, I assure you, are more interested in good music than they are football.
As rude as you were in your e-mail to my web page, I will still take the time out of my busy schedule to answer some of your questions.
1. Mr. Bacharach is very happily heterosexual.
2. He has children to prove this.
3. Mr. Bacharach plays several instruments. The pianoforte is the one he is most closely associated with popularly.
4. He has a wonderful sense of humor. I don't know what you meant when you said "Is he ****ing serious?" quote in quote /sic/

Sorry you are 100% wrong, tinkling refers to the sound the piano makes, when one TICKLES the Ivories.
As I have suggested, just do a search for tickling the ivories & it somes up with examples of musicians doing this.
Gawd it's hard, where is that brick wall.
