This is a hypothetical and Vader your probably best for this.
I'm not interested in the likelihood or anything, would just like to know.

Say Tippo negotiations with Sydney breakdown, Brissy jump in quickly and say we'd really like him we'll give you pick 8 but we cant fit him under the salary cap now that Moloney's with us.
AFC - well we've got $800k spare, how about you pay him 75%, we pay 25% of the contract.
Would the AFL allow this ?

Again just want to know the rule, not interested in "AFC would never do that" blah blah

Not a bad idea...don't know if it would swing thou.
Couldn't they just back end his contract or renegotiate when Browny and Black hang up the boots. I want to get rid of him for the best we can, but paying someone to do it may be stretching it a bit far. Rather spend the 200K topping up players who actually want to be at the club.

It has happened in the past, but I believe only for players who had a contract still in play. No idea if a new contract could be drawn up in which the Crows agree to pay a portion of the salary for one of Brisbane's players.

Good point!

Frankly, all this stuff about the "Bloods Culture" seems a mile overstated to me. I don't really think there is any such thing as the "Bloods Culture" - or if there is, it's a name for something pretty much every club in the league already has.

Sydney have not been as successful as they are because of some kind of mystical culture. They've been as successful as they are because they've been well managed, well coached, and their players have gotten the most out of themselves.

Most strong teams will have a 'culture' or what would otherwise be called a bond. It's the byproduct of being together for a long period, working towards a common goal, and perhaps just as important winning. Take for example Geelong post internal review, or North Melbourne who have gone as far as naming theirs as the 'Shinboner Spirit'. It's a valuable ingredient but it's not exclusive to one team and it's not the sole reason for success. The truth is a lot of myths and legends get made when a team wins the premiership, and the Swan's culture is one of these.

Personally I think if the swans can't get close then both parties should agree to walk away. Let Adelaide and Tippett get on with finding another buyer.

Since Adelaide and Sydney apparently didn't meet today this could be going on regardless.
It wouldn't make much sense for Adelaide not to go and see what else was on the table if for nothing else but to sure up some leverage.
Sydney as well would be seeing what it could get even if not for a viable trade with Adelaide.
Teams would undoubtedly be doing their due diligence in risk management.
Unlikely they have no fail-safes.
Hopefully those fail-safes aren't Tamblings.

One thing I am struggling with FAITH, or anyone else for that matter, is that we are talking about bringing new players into the club, but at the same time we seem to be re-signing virtually all of the players on our list.

The only players that I know of that won't there next year are Tippett, Knights, Doughty and Symes. That's 4 vacancies that I can think of.

Are there any more?

Crouch comes on the list. That leaves 3 vacancies, as long as we leave Cullinan on the Rookie list.

Giles and GHS appear to be trade-in targets. That only leaves one vacancy and there's no way we would be only having one pick in this draft.

Are we going to trade out players as part of our trades in? Are we going to pay Tambling out??

Can anybody please enlighten me on this apparent conundrum?

PS What is the contract status of Johncock, Otten, and McKernan
Macca I poste this in another thread ....because iam struggling with the numbers myself

Lost;
Doughty
Tippett - will get player & pick or two picks???
Knights - will get compo pick
Symes
McIntyre - back to rookie
Callinan - ats back to rookie
Rutten - to veteran list
Reilly - to Veterans list

Gain
Crouch

"Rules are different next year. All lists are 40, and Veterans are included within the 40."

Current list is 42 minus Callinan & Mcintyre = 40

My reckoning ats we have 1 pick .....am i missing something

Thanks for that, Paladin. :thumbsu:

That means after we include Crouch there are only 3 vacancies and therefore 3 picks in the draft.

How are we going to trade players in without trading players out??

It wouldn't make sense to have less than 3 picks in this draft.
Isn't is mandatory to have 3 picks?

Ahhhh, the extra veteran, which as you say gives us 4 vacancies after Crouch's addition to the list. Thanks, Vader. :thumbsu:

It all gets very tight for draft picks if we bring players into the club plus there is pressure from Callinan and Laird for Upgrades from the Rookie list.

I can't see how we can afford to keep Tambling on the list - contract or no contract.
People forgetting we get a compo pick for Knights

I'm still only seeing 1 pick available ???

Vader has summarised it all post 5531

EDIT: 5561
Then read my post 5620 and see where my calculations our out ......because i can't find enough draft picks to meet minimum UNLESS we trade some players out

Armstrong was out of contract so he could have gone to the PSD.
Good point.
What the club did was a more than reasonable trade. So what supporters say and what clubs do are two different things.

What I think is happening here is the swans are struggling to get what the crows think is fair value. The question is, if the swans can't get there will the deal fall over or will the crows accept a lessor offer. If Adelaide accept a lessor offer have they been "bent over" or is it just a poor deal.

There are people on this thread who think pick 2 and Giles would be fair whilst I've heard swans fans say pick 22 will do them. The thing I know is that Noble and Beatson will by now have a fair idea what the real number is going to be. How close the swans can get to it is yet to be seen.

Will Adelaide be "bent over". It will depend on what you thought the deal should have been.

Personally I think if the swans can't get close then both parties should agree to walk away. Let Adelaide and Tippett get on with finding another buyer.
That makes a lot of sense. I think an agreement will be made sooner than most expect so both clubs can get on with it. I don't think either club have anything to prove by playing bully boy at the trade table.

end of 2012 main list = 40
minus Doughty, Symes, Knights, Tippett, Callinan (to rookie)
plus Crouch
= 36
(therefore 4 vacancies)
(McIntyre was not part of that main list)

Heath Grundy to stay a Swan for life

Swans defender Heath Grundy will not be returning to SA to play for the Crows. Picture: Phil Hillyard. The Daily Telegraph
ADELAIDE'S hopes of landing Heath Grundy, a Swan from South Australia, in exchange for Kurt Tippett have been quashed.

As trade talks between the Crows and Swans stagnated yesterday, Grundy's manager, Marty Pask, said the Croweater would not be involved in any Tippett move to Sydney.

According to team list on website ....we have 42 players inc Callinan & Mcintyre

Take them off and it's 40

Out: Doughty, Symes, Knights, Tippett
In: Crouch, compo pick Knights, player & pick Tippett (or 2 picks?)

My Reckoning 1 free draft pick for national draft

As you said, can now have 40 on the list;

Start of play 2012: 38 senior + 1 veteran
Losses
Doughty (ret): 38 + 0
Rutten & Reilly (to vets): 36 + 2
Knights (FA): 35 + 2
Symes (delist): 34 + 2
Tippett (trade): 33 + 2

Gains
Crouch (upgrade): 34 + 2

- this will give 4 vacancies on our senior list.
- If we receive more than 1 player in the Tippett trade then we'll have to delist another player in order to meet the AFL's mandatory minimum of 3 list vacancies.

No you didn't read my post did you ;)

Veterans are included in team list of 40 and we get a compo pick for Knights

That makes 1 draft pick ......hope someone can show me the errors of my wayso_O

I have no idea how many times Vader has to post the same thing before people take note.

The guts of it is, we can have 1 more player on our senior list next year than we did this year, as we will have 2 veterans outside the main list.

So far, we have-
Out: Doughty, Symes, Knights
In: Crouch

So if the draft was tomorrow, we would have 3 picks. One or more of these might be rookie upgrades (Laird, Callinan). Of course, this will all go batshit mental in the next 2 weeks, so it's a question probably best revisited then.
