SCENE SIX

The Advertiser, sports section, 10 am Monday 29 October 2012

Michelangelo Rucci is sitting at his desk working his mouse with his right hand and his newly-moussed hair with his left.

Sam Weir, Editor of the Advertiser, comes up behind him and looks at the screen.

Weir: What are you doing Michelangelo?

Rucci: Just doing some in-depth research for today's footy story boss.

Weir: Is that an internet forum you're reading? (Leans forward for a closer look at screen) Is that Big Footy you're looking at?

Rucci: Er, Ah, the bloke before me must've saved it in 'favourites', sorry boss, I never read that rubbish.

Weir: OK, don't worry about it, at least you're not looking at pr0n.

Rucci: Why would I want to look at pr0n?

Weir: Er.... ah....well I can't help you there. But I'd hate to think my staff would look at disgusting websites to get a dirty thrill.

Rucci: Not me! I just look at the Port website and pore over the Creed.

Weir: Yes.... well.... have you got a minute, just want to talk to you about something?

Rucci: Fire away.

Weir: Funny you should say that, because the biggest story in Adelaide football has been unfolding and all the breaking news is coming from Melbourne. You're here in Adelaide, ground zero, and my best football writer..... well except for Capel, Feldstadt, Partland, Milbank, Homfray, Bednall....

Rucci: Whoa, steady up boss, I'm better than those hacks!

Weir: Well I'm certainly paying you more than them, and they don't get the Destination for Men vouchers either. You're supposed to report news, even Cornes' and McDermott's opinion pieces are more interesting than yours!

Rucci : Jeez, that's a low blow boss! Fair go, they aren't even journalists!

Weir : Well at least they played the game.

Rucci: I was in the Port Adelaide cheer squad.

Weir: So?

Rucci: Had Rexy Johns' number on my duffle coat.

Weir: Who's Rexy Johns?

Rucci: Sexy Rexy Johns? Legend, top goal kicker for years, household name boss, surely you've heard of him.

Weir: Well he may have been a household name in the Rucci household but I don't give a flying f.....k, lift your game Rooch or you're gone. Gonski, finito, arrivederci, de-listed. Your strike rate is p...s poor. Do you actually have any contacts, people who can give you the inside story?

Rucci: Of course, got some great contacts boss, people down at Alberton give me the good oil all the time.

Weir: I'm not talking about f.......g Port Adelaide, nobody cares what happens down there. You need to get the inside running on some Crows' stories. Who are your contacts down there?

Rucci: Sorry boss, can't reveal my sources.

Weir: Why not?

Rucci: I'm a journalist!

Weir: Hmmm. I'll let that through to the keeper. And ask you again. Who are your contacts?

Rucci: Boss, fair go, it would be against the journalists' code of ethics, you know that.

Weir: Well your contacts are certainly safe. No chance of them being blown, you'd actually have to break a big story to do that. You've been in this town in this job for ever, do you actually have any contacts at the Crows, you know, people in key positions, people who know what's going on, people you can ring to get the real inside story. What about Triggy?

Rucci: He doesn't give me a thing, stuck up self-righteous eastern suburbs p....k..

Weir: Harper?

Rucci: I thought you said important people who know what's going on.

Weir: OK, how about Noble? He should know everything.

Rucci: Haven't you been following this at all?

Weir: Well what about your old mate Burtenshaw?

Rucci: He's sh1t scared of losing his cushy job. (pauses to think) OK, if you must know I'll give you the first name, 'Claude'.

Weir: Ok, now we're getting somewhere. Does he have good access to the inner sanctum? Access to all the big decisions? Is he an insider?

Rucci: Well you could say he works 'inside'.

Weir: I don't like riddles Rucci? What does he actually do down there?

Rucci: You're twisting my arm boss, all I can say is he is he has a specialist role, is well liked, doesn't speak to anyone.

Weir :(Thinking) Hey, isn't Claude the name of the mascot?!

Rucci: Is he? Sh1t! I was wondering why I wasn't getting any stories out of him. Sorry boss, I'll get another source, promise.

Weir: You better, and quick, this is your last warning. if you can't find a good source at the Crows you're history !

Rucci: A good sauce eh? What was the name of the cook down there?

Apart from the AFC own stupidity the one thing that amazes me in this entire saga is that in all Tony Tippett and Blutcher's ego driven effort to screw the AFC they have been negligent and failed to act in the best interest of Kurt

In the process of trying to bend over the AFC they have also bent Kurt over

It's hard to make good well balanced decisions when the people around you are driven by greed and ego

Tony now as a father needs to live with the damage he has caused his son

thinking we will get a
$600,000 fine
lose 2nd round draft pick

tippet will lose rep

dad will not get a fathersday card again

Guys sorry for the intrusion onto your board - just one thing that someone mentioned earlier (I've read most of the 730 pages o_O): If Sydney were so desperate to offload White's contract, and when they couldn't they quickly offloaded Dennis-Lane, Heath and Spangher, as well as all the delistings, they must be worried that they don't actually have the room to price Tippett out of everyone else's range.

When they said he was getting paid less in the first year than he would have been to stay with you that would have been assuming White's contract was not on their books, so they could afford to backload his $4M over 4 years, meaning most of it would be paid when Goodes, Bolton etc retire.

Now that he's in the draft they have to cough up more money up front, which would surely put pressure on their 2013 salary cap - and given GWS have so many kids on Rookie contracts still, and the cost of living allowance, I'm not sure there is a price Tippett could nominate that would price GWS out of his range. I'm sure the AFL would be happy for him to go to GWS too, would help them be more competitive earlier as Cameron and Patton develop.

I feel for you guys as you get punished for something that previous administrators have done, and from the sounds of it just a really stupid decision rather than a deliberate attempt to cheat the cap or manipulate the draft.

400k fine.

Loose first and second round pick in 2012, maybe same in 2013 or a smaller amount

1/2 will be suspended assuming it doesn't happen again in the next 10\20 years.

I wonder if the afl well consider that you have already lost Tippett for nothing when considering the penalty?

Got to love the Rucci articles today. They basically consist of looking at the AFL rules to see what penalties are possible then suggesting that 'Crows could lose premiership points!!!' 'Tippett could be banned from the AFL for 3 years!!!!!!!'.

They may well be possible but, given the sanctions given to Carlton, are very unlikely. Similarly, I can't see Tippett being banned for any more than 12 months at most (and even that is probably not going to happen).

I also find it hilarious that many posters here would now be happy with $kurt possibly going to the Gold Coast for nothing. If that were to happen it would mean that he would live near Mummy and Daddy, get paid 650k+ per season (I can't see him nominating less than that) and live near the surf. How is that anything remotely resembling a punishment for him? It may mean that he misses out on half a million or so from Sydney, but that still seems like a very, very sweet deal for him considering all that has happened.

Personally I hope that he gets picked up by GWS. Failing that, Melbourne.

Regarding the possibility of him staying with the Crows, assuming that for some strange reason all the players and coaching staff are ok with this (and I think that ship sailed a couple of weeks ago), wouldn't $kurt being deregistered by the AFL mean that he gets dumped into the draft and he no longer has the option of resigning with the Crows?

Exactly what I'm wondering. Industry opinion seemed to be that he was worth two first rounders or an early 1st and early 2nd round pick. Thats already a fairly hefty penalty. Surely the last 3 or 4 years of being reamed by the new clubs/greedy sillys has to be factored in as well. The VFL created the environment where we have been pillaged and the one stupid act the AFC do to try and keep their members and stay competitive bites them as well.

Without a hint of arrogance I would like to point out the most recent revelation. Stay tuned for the next announcement that at the end of 2011 Gold Coast believe that they had come to an agreement that Tippett would be traded to them at the end of 2012.

How long before Rucci claims that the AFL are now considering taking premiership points from Adelaide next year .

I must admit that I would get some sense of satisfaction if $kurt doesn't end up at Sydney. Even though I only signed up last week, I was reading this thread from the start and getting quite annoyed at a number of Sydney posters. Specifically it was frustrating to read the lack of logic that:

1. $kurt being uncontracted meant that he was worth pick 23 and that we should be happy with that, despite the fact they had tabled an offer to make him one of the top 3 paid players at their club.
2. Sydney didn't really want or need $kurt. Apparently they just like to offer long-term contracts on big dollars to random players each year and $kurt's name was drawn out of the hat this time around.
2. Sydney wouldn't be paying him $1m/season. That amount was all media hype, despite the fact that Adelaide and Brisbane had offered $kurt contracts around $700-800k a year and Sydney's was better than that.
3. If he went into the draft, Sydney would be the only one able to pay his $1m/season salary (often just after stating that $kurt wouldn't be on anywhere near $1m/season!)

It's like a how many jellybeans inthe jar comp. what do we win for getting it right
I think 800 000 fine with half suspended.
Loss of first and second round picks - suspended

I can't get over it either.

I blame Kurt for a lot of this; but I can't believe that his Dad would put him in this position.

Rucci was just on SEN with his "new" will the Crows lose premiership points next year theory. He flies "home" next week so I guess he's throwing as many darts as possible this week in the hope that one of them will hit the target. By the time he returns most people will have forgotten all the crap that has spouted from his mouth and he will be claiming that he broke the story.

I think the deal here is the difference between 'deregistered' and 'delisted'.

The AFL can deregister him as a player, which means he is not allowed to play any AFL affiliated football (AFL, SANFL, NQAFL or whatever that league is called, none of them). He would still be a listed player on a list, currently Adelaides list.

The Crows (or in some circumtances KT himself) can delist him from the AFC list. He can then go into a draft as a registered but unlisted player. Pending the outcome of their investigation the AFL have said he can't be delisted - for the moment he stays on Adelaide's list as an uncontracted player.

Yep. The guy is scraping the bottom of the barrel. His poisoned pen has alienated him from reasonable journalistic sources here in SA (including Port Power) and he now can only resort to padded up innuendo. What most readers dont realise is his skill at framing his commentaries to make them appear as breaking news and that he has his finger on the pulse with inside knowledge.
